Chapter 993: Chapter 998: No Opportunity Given
Yang Yi stepped out the door, refreshed and clear-headed. Today was the day he would truly pilot an aircraft, not be toyed with by Hegelhaus, but embark on a real flight.
The weather was fine, the extreme conditions during simulations were unlikely to happen, everything was perfect. Yet, there was a slight unease in Yang Yi’s heart.
It’s always different the first time.
Yang Yi strode into Hegelhaus’s office.
Hegelhaus still wore the same expression, but there was something a bit different about him today. Upon seeing Yang Yi, he kept a straight face and said woodenly, "I heard you put on quite the performance yesterday, taking down many people."
Yang Yi smiled and replied, "Yes, I’m quite skilled with my hands."
Hegelhaus didn’t respond and it wasn’t clear what he thought of Yang Yi’s actions. After a moment of silence, he grabbed the sunglasses on the desk and said in a deep voice, "Let’s go."
Hegelhaus could be described as the head flight instructor at the CIA training camp. The advantage of being personally trained by Hegelhaus was always having priority access to the aircraft. Of course, the downside was that Yang Yi faced much more pressure than the others.
Yang Yi got on the plane after Hegelhaus, and then everything proceeded in an orderly fashion.
Yang Yi had practiced takeoffs and landings on the simulator numerous times, but for his first real flight, Hegelhaus would take control for the takeoff. No matter how good Yang Yi was on the simulator, according to the rules, he couldn’t possibly handle the takeoff himself.
Hegelhaus got the plane off the ground and then said in a serious tone, "Now, the control is yours. Get used to the feeling of flying for a bit, then do as I say."
Yang Yi gripped the control stick, his excitement coming from deep within.
Even though he hadn’t made any significant movements yet, the fact that he was controlling the plane gave a unique feeling.
After a while, Hegelhaus finally gave his commands.
"Climb in altitude."
"Level flight."
"Turn left."
"Turn right."
Yang Yi meticulously executed Hegelhaus’s commands. His operations were precise and spot-on, perfectly following Hegelhaus’s orders.
After about half an hour of flying, Yang Yi had gone through all the basic maneuvers he knew. Then Hegelhaus said indifferently, "Alright, let’s head back to the airfield and prepare to land."
During the landing, Hegelhaus was in control again; it was impossible for Yang Yi to land the plane on his first flight himself.
But for the second flight, right after touching down, Hegelhaus planned to let Yang Yi take off by himself.
Whether it was this aircraft or any other, the takeoff and landing phases were the most dangerous. According to regulations, a pure novice like Yang Yi would need to fly with an instructor for at least five times before attempting to take off and land on their own. But clearly, Hegelhaus was one of the bolder instructors, and Yang Yi was not the type to back down either.
Yang Yi’s genius lied in his ability to do better on his second attempt. Just give him a second chance, and he would certainly improve significantly, outpacing everyone else.
During his first real aircraft takeoff, Yang Yi showed no signs of nervousness or discomfort. He didn’t need any reminders from Hegelhaus; he completed all the work all by himself. The aircraft’s ascent was so smooth that it would’ve been indistinguishable from that of a seasoned flyer.
When they were finally airborne and reached a certain altitude, Hegelhaus spoke up at last.
"The takeoff was very good, so now, you can freestyle it."
Freestyling, those words sounded so pleasant.
After flying in a well-behaved and honest manner for a while, Yang Yi finally couldn’t help it and whispered, "Instructor, does freestyling include doing aerobatics? Simple ones, like rolls and such."
Hegelhaus spoke sluggishly, "Just do as you understand freestyle to be."
Unable to restrain himself any longer, Yang Yi did indeed execute a turn.
It didn’t seem like much of a big deal, although his head felt somewhat dizzy.
Yang Yi now understood how to control the plane, but his body clearly had not fully adapted to flying. Those aerobatic pilots and veteran flyers who perform various maneuvers without getting airsick do so because of their extensive training. Even if Yang Yi were a genius, his body clearly couldn’t keep pace with his mind.
Fortunately, he wasn’t too dizzy, but Yang Yi still didn’t dare to do any high G-force maneuvers. He just flew honestly and carefully, afraid he would make himself throw up in the plane.
This time, the landing was also done by Yang Yi himself.
Clean, sharp, and very steady, just like a veteran, nothing like a novice flying the plane personally for the first time.
After completing the plane’s inspection and refueling, without even leaving the plane, Hegelhaus said solemnly, "Take off again."
Without any need for further words, just take off.
This time he flew longer than before. Yang Yi truly indulged himself in the sky.
The landing was just as smooth, without any faults or hiccups, so steady that Hegelhaus could not pick out anything wrong.
After the plane had landed, Hegelhaus was silent for a long while and finally said, "You can fly solo tomorrow. You will fly alone, and after forty hours, I will give you a flight license, a special flight license. If you want a civilian flight license, someone will help you with that, and if you want to fly a more advanced model, submit an application."
Having flown only three times, Yang Yi could fly solo, which meant he was ready to graduate.
Forty flight hours could be easily completed. This was different from a civilian aviation school; there was no need to queue, no need for complicated procedures. As long as Yang Yi wanted to fly and his body allowed it, he could fly several times a day, for a dozen hours if he wished.
"Thank you, Instructor."
Hegelhaus sighed and said, "You don’t need to thank me. Saving some time is good for both of us. Once you finish the fixed-wing aircraft lessons, we’ll start with the helicopter lessons. That’s it for today’s lesson."
After disembarking from the plane, Hegelhaus handed over the head to the ground crew and gave Yang Yi a profound look before leaving. His silhouette seemed somewhat desolate.
He wanted to make things difficult, but he had no chance to. Perhaps Hegelhaus really felt helpless about that.
Yang Yi certainly didn’t hate Hegelhaus, nor did he dislike him, but he really couldn’t pretend to be even a little bit ordinary. Ordinary people might not be able to pretend to be geniuses, and geniuses trying to act ordinary is actually quite difficult.
Moreover, Yang Yi was really in a hurry; he had no intention of pretending anything.
Now that the flight time was over, he had to think about what to do in the afternoon. If there were no obstacles, Yang Yi felt it was time to move on to the shooting range.
The only weak point, and also Yang Yi’s greatest regret, was shooting. Although his marksmanship couldn’t be considered poor, it was still far from very good.
Just like Brian and Paul said before, the only way to get good at shooting is to shoot more, so what Yang Yi needed to do next was to use up bullets, to shoot until he couldn’t bear it but still keep at it.
