Chapter 979: Chapter 984: Training Camp

The CIA’s training camp is managed by the Administration Division, so it was a simple matter for Yang Yi to go to the training camp.

But the training camp is not exclusively for the Administration Division’s people. In fact, any employee entering the CIA must undergo at least three months of training at the training camp, starting with the most basic subjects such as confidentiality, hand-to-hand combat, shooting, and special driving.

After three months of basic training, some people will move on to their job positions, and they will quickly forget some of the skills as an office clerk sitting all day will hardly maintain the shooting level they had in training camp.

But others will continue to advance. For example, those responsible for intelligence assessment will undergo further training to improve their intelligence analysis skills, and operatives need to strengthen foreign languages, as well as receive higher-level shooting and combat training. Therefore, in the training camp managed by the Administration Division, many graduates will join the Directorate of Operations. Another scenario is that the operatives will regularly return to the camp for training and evaluation to assess whether they are still suitable for high-intensity and high-risk jobs.

Hence, things at the training camp are much more complicated, so Walter would definitely not handle Yang Yi’s transfer to the camp personally.

Yang Yi had to reside in the training camp. He was different from the ordinary trainees because he didn’t have to start from the most fundamental subjects. The main reason for his training was to learn how to fly planes. Additionally, if he had any spare time, he could entirely enhance his other skills. His freedom in the training camp could be considered the highest there.

Yang Yi showed his identification, and the person in charge of reception checked his ID, entered the ID number, and then saw Yang Yi’s file.

"Flight training, basic training for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, right?"

"Yes, thank you."

As a special trainee, the receptionist picked up the phone, and then he quickly said, "Officer, a flight trainee is here to report for basic training in both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Could you tell me where to direct him?"

After waiting momentarily, the receptionist hung up the phone and then told Yang Yi, "Report to the Flight Department. Someone will take you there, and once you’re there, someone will arrange your upcoming schedule. You can go now."

Yang Yi took his ID and then picked up his backpack with a change of clothes, smiling, "Thank you."

The training camp was very large, featuring almost every training field imaginable. Yang Yi had to report to the Flight Department on foot, which would take a long time, so a person in work attire drove a shuttle car to bring Yang Yi to the department.

The camp had a small runway suitable for the take-off and landing of small, fixed-wing propeller planes, and there was an abundance of helipads. When Yang Yi arrived, he saw several small planes taking off in succession.

Yang Yi looked at these small planes, knowing that he would soon be one of those who could pilot them, and he genuinely felt happy.

Withdrawing his gaze, Yang Yi pushed open a shabby and old wooden door, arriving at the Flight Department’s check-in point.

An unfriendly-looking old man with graying hair was sitting behind a worn desk, with a pair of flying sunglasses and very old leather gloves on it.

"Hello, sir, I’m here to report."

The old man glanced at Yang Yi, "Are you the one who was pushed into this program?"

"I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean by ’pushed in.’"

The old man rapped on the desk, indifferently saying, "We don’t have many instructors here. New trainees join in cohorts, but you’ve come too late. The courses have just reached the halfway point. If I placed you with other trainees, you wouldn’t be able to catch up with them. If I arranged an instructor just for you, I’d have to ask someone to work overtime. Do you think anyone likes working overtime just to teach a novice?"

Yang Yi was startled, and then he replied seriously, "But I was told that the training here is always one-on-one, isn’t it?"

The old man sighed and said, "What are you thinking? If you were in an advanced training cohort, or even an intermediate one, you’d get one-on-one training. But what are you? You’re a novice, a novice who hasn’t even taken to the skies. For novice students, how could we possibly provide one-on-one guidance? Kid, I’m not short on intermediate and advanced instructors; what’s missing here are junior instructors, understand? This is the CIA, not an aviation school. In fact, I always suggest that novices should be sent to an aviation school for their most basic training, not dumped all on me."

After airing his grievances, the old man looked sideways at Yang Yi and asked, "Have you grasped the most basic part?"

"Uh, no, I’m a complete beginner."

The old man deliberately opened a drawer and placed two books on the table, "Here are two basic textbooks, flight manuals. You need to self-study to catch up with the others. You want to learn to fly both kinds of aircraft, ha, ha-ha..."

Seemingly with a hint of sarcasm, the old man tapped the flight manuals, "You must understand some terminology and basic knowledge, so memorize these two textbooks. When you think you’re ready, I will arrange an inspector to test you. If they think you’re good to go, you can continue with the next part of the course. Now..."

The old man took out a form and with a hint of surprise, he said, "They’ve actually arranged a separate dormitory for you, with privileges for advanced trainees, alright. You’re a novice, but you’re a lucky one, Reggie!"

The old man suddenly shouted, and a door nearby immediately opened, and a young man emerged, "Officer."

"Take this young man to his quarters, tell him where to eat, get him settled, and then come back."

"Yes, Officer."

Yang Yi blurted out anxiously, "Sorry, Officer, I have a question."

"Speak."

"I’ve been allowed to participate in other training besides flying, uh, I’d like to know what kind of discipline I need to follow, and if I want to take part in other training, do I need your permission, Officer?"

The old man seemed surprised, then looked annoyed and said, "What do you take flying for? Do you think piloting an airplane up into the sky is as easy as sneaking out with your parents’ car? You can join whatever other training you want, but remember this: if you can’t meet the standards, don’t ever think you’ll get my signature for your flying qualification. Now, get out of my office! Get out!"

Yang Yi left somewhat awkwardly, and then Reggie, the young man named before, looked back and whispered softly, "Don’t take it personally; though Mr. Hegelhaus may seem a bit cold, he’s a good man, a very fine instructor. If he chastises you, it’s for your own good."
