Chapter 958: Chapter 963 Still Too Inexperienced

Reality is always disheartening—the CIA has lucid minds, but they are powerless to change the reality.

And the reality is the CIA messing up their missions one after the other, destroying their image, with a serious loss of talent, and able and willing workers being transferred to the Department of Homeland Security, only established in 2002.

Nowadays, the CIA, let alone investigating enemy intelligence, can’t even protect its own internal secrets; underneath a huge and highly aggressive shell, there lies an old soul.

The three fell silent since they all empathized.

There are many reasons for the situation today, but their own incompetence is an undeniable fact. So, why has the CIA fallen so quickly, and why have its people suddenly become inept at intelligence work?

Porter thought Aaron was one of the main culprits—if a person of such high rank influencing the entire CIA and even the entire United States intelligence system was a mole, then it’s no wonder that any situation could arise.

"The current situation must change; we have to start by cleaning the cancer within, and we can’t rely on a director who gets replaced every few days, only on ourselves."

Porter finally came to a conclusion. Dave said nothing, but the hitherto silent Coit suddenly said, "There’s a problem—if one of them really is a mole, but he has always been tough on Russia and his work also seems to be done well, it seems unconvincing to accuse him of being a mole."

Porter shook his head and said, "That question is foolish—for a simple reason, what does attitude prove? And would the Russians use such a valuable mole so carelessly? Once at his position, he is a strategic weapon; the Russians would rather send half of the KGB to his gunpoint to help him rise than expose this line."

After saying that, Porter chuckled lightly, "Of course, you might be right, he is not a Russian mole, but a Soviet mole—there is a big difference between the two. It’s even possible that the Russians don’t know he was a mole for the Soviet Union, since the Soviet intelligence was actively abandoned by the Russians, who purged them even more severely than the damage we suffered. But what does it matter? A mole is a mole, no matter whose mole he is. The danger is something we cannot afford."

Coit nodded and said, "You’re right, I have no more questions."

But Porter still said, with a face full of reflection, "Aaron did many things during his tenure. He turned the drug lords of Mexico into a little gold mine for the CIA—it’s ridiculous that the United States intelligence agencies collect protection money from drug lords. And there are arms dealers, and so much more... What difference is there now between the CIA and the original FBI?"

Dave spoke gravely, "What are you planning?"

Porter stopped his complaints about the current state of affairs—it was useless to talk about it. It was better to think about how to solve the current situation.

After pondering for a moment, Porter said in a deep voice, "That Nicholas, he is supported by Aaron, right?"

Dave nodded and said, "Yes, Deyo is controlled by Aaron. Whatever we need to do, like supporting a certain armed group, it’s always Deyo who comes forward to deliver the weapons, passing the dirty work onto the arms dealers. Actually, I used to think this idea wasn’t bad."

Porter didn’t respond, but said indifferently, "Tell me what you think about Sea God."

Dave spoke solemnly, "A young man, a very lucky young man, not professional enough, with some faults typical of young people, but very smart."

"What do you mean by ’very smart’?"

Dave thought for a moment and spoke seriously, "He’s very candid because he knows what he needs. He wants to use our strength to solve his greatest enemy. Apart from Aaron, or rather apart from the CIA, he doesn’t have to worry about any other serious enemies, so he doesn’t hide his thoughts. This makes him seem like an honest young man, but that’s only because he sees through us."

"Go on."

"He’s very confident, with a confidence that isn’t typical for his age. And I must admit, whether due to luck or something else, Sea God has accomplished what most couldn’t, having the Magic Box Squadron work for him is quite an achievement."

Porter exhaled, saying, "Yes, Magic Box Squadron, a name that has become history. I never thought I’d hear it again. You’re saying people from Magic Box Squadron are on the move?"

Dave nodded, "Yes, the Magic Box Squadron disbanded a long time ago, and we had long since removed control over its members. But after Sea God appeared, I specifically pulled up Brian and the Magic Box Squadron members’ files and then noticed they disappeared not too long ago in the United States. Without a detailed investigation, I can conclude that they have assembled again, under Brian or rather under Sea God."

Porter smiled and said, "Interesting, this young fellow really is interesting."

Dave hesitated but still spoke solemnly, "There’s one more thing. Sea God might not have received professional spy training; he says he was trained by Mike, but they spent too much time together, which cannot count as the training a true spy should have. So Sea God is not a particularly professional spy, at least in my view, but... I believe he knows the criminal underworld better than us. Moreover, he really has gained impressive power in the underworld. If we don’t intervene, I think he will take Deyo’s place, and even surpass him."

Porter looked at Coit, "What’s your take?"

Coit thought for a moment and said, "My judgment is similar to Dave’s, but I’ll add something. Sea God is ambitious, and he doesn’t hide it. He hopes we can eliminate his greatest enemy, after which he can become someone truly powerful. Another thing, he admitted to being turned by MI5, which I think is his way of breaking away from the CIA. A person who leaks secrets is not trustworthy, and he wants us not to trust him, so he can benefit without having to pay any price."

"What do you mean by ’price’?"

"To help us with things. He doesn’t want to continue his secret mission; he wants to rid himself of his task, throwing the trouble to us, while he is free to do his own thing."

Dave nodded, then spoke with gravity, "I agree with this view. Sea God is hiding this idea very well, but he can’t fool me. Coit saw it too, pleased to see our judgments align."

Porter smiled, "Then let’s not let him succeed. Sea God has too rosy a view of this world, thinking we will obediently follow his lead? Haha, in the end, he’s still young, a bit too green."
