Chapter 934: Chapter 939: The Black Taxi
Yang Yi wasn’t afraid of speeding, but he was afraid of being a passenger in a speeding car.
Grasping the handle on the car door, Yang Yi turned his head back and shouted at Xiao Ran, "Does this scene seem familiar?"
Xiao Ran’s face was pale as death when she suddenly screamed, "Watch out, it’s a one-way street!"
The roads in the old district of Rome were narrow, crowded with vehicles and pedestrians, but the driver was fully embracing a fearless spirit of squeezing through gaps and overtaking other cars with expert skills.
Yang Yi instinctively leaned to the side as they entered the one-way street where a small car was coming head-on. The alley was narrow, and with the taxi’s terrifying speed, it looked like neither vehicle had any chance of stopping in time.
Yang Yi’s eyes widened in terror, but the two cars still managed to brush past each other. He instinctively turned to look and saw that the oncoming Fiat 500 had already stopped in the middle of the road.
Justin’s safety was important, and he meant a lot to the Organization of Water, but Yang Yi felt his own life was more important, and Kate and Xiao Ran’s lives were more important than Justin’s.
"Slow down! Slow down! Buddy, slow down!"
Yang Yi finally admitted defeat. He thought he was an excellent race car driver, no longer scared by speed, but he now realized he was wrong.
"We can’t slow down! It’s been twenty-five minutes already!"
"I’ll give you money! Slow down!"
"No way! I have principles!"
"Fuck! Watch out... you almost killed someone!"
"It’s okay, I’m watching. You better not distract me."
Yang Yi glanced at the nameplate the driver had placed in front of the passenger seat and then urgently said, "Aren’t you afraid of losing your driver’s license? Buddy, you don’t need to lose your license for two thousand US dollars, I’ll give you money, all of it!"
"The license is fake, this is an illegal taxi, get it? The information about this taxi is also fake."
"Fuck! Then you..."
"The ID plate is fake too, my friend and I use the same plate number, get it? The car is stolen; I bought a hot car, buddy, this is very normal in Italy, in Rome at least ten percent of taxis are like me, nothing to worry about."
Yang Yi closed his eyes again, then he heard a sharp screech of brakes. When he reopened his eyes, he saw that the taxi had stopped at a traffic light intersection. If the car hadn’t braked in time, it would have hit the pedestrians on the sidewalk.
Two young people were standing on the road, giving the taxi driver the middle finger, and the driver, not to be outdone, stuck his head out and returned the gesture with a fierce shout, "Back off!"
This driver was too arrogant, just too damn arrogant!
Just then, Kate said anxiously, "Police!"
No sooner had Kate spoken than a police officer on a motorcycle pulled up alongside the taxi. Another officer got off the bike and directly said to the driver leaning on the car window, "Pull over to the side of the road and then get out. Show me your driver’s license."
The taxi driver put on a different face; he put his hands together, grinning, "Oh, pal, don’t be like that. I was just going a bit too fast, please, I rely on driving a taxi to feed my family—it’s tough."
The officer tapped the roof of the car and said, "Get out! Driver’s license!"
The driver reached into his pocket for something, then said to the officer, "Buddy, come a little closer, a little closer."
The officer leaned in close to the car window, and the driver placed a twenty-Euro bill in the officer’s hand, whispering, "Please, brother, these customers are in a hurry."
The officer raised an eyebrow and continued, "Get out of the car, and I will also charge you with attempting to bribe an officer."
The driver shrugged and with a pained expression, drew out a fifty-euro note, which he placed in the policeman’s hand before speaking softly, "Do you think my attitude of admitting guilt is sincere?"
The policeman stood up straight, his hands on his belt, and spoke loudly, "Remember, go and deal with this yourself. I’ve already noted your license plate number."
After that, the policeman rode away on his motorcycle.
The driver cursed under his breath, "Bastard! The cops in Naples are happy with twenty euros, but the police in Rome just took seventy from me. I should’ve started with fifty; I overpaid by twenty euros. Ah, bastard!"
The taxi started moving again, and five minutes later, the driver stopped the car on the roadside, then immediately checked his watch and exclaimed loudly, "Thirty-five minutes! Fuck! Bastard! I could have made it here in thirty if it weren’t for this! Oh, my luck is so terrible, man, you saw it, you’re paying the cops!"
Yang Yi tossed the money to the driver, then pulled out another thousand euros and said, "Here, take it all, it’s what you deserve."
Yang Yi opened the car door and got out, followed by the pale-faced Xiao Ran and Kate.
Their legs were a bit wobbly, but thankfully, no one was going to throw up, which really would have been too embarrassing.
Yang Yi took out his phone, decided against calling Justin first, and instead called Anton. Once Anton picked up, Yang Yi looked around and said, "We’re here. Where are you guys?"
"We’ve arrived? Are you sure we aren’t mistaken? We’re still on the road."
After asking the driver, Anton urgently said, "We need at least a half-hour more. What’s your situation? Were you tricked?"
Yang Yi glanced around, then replied wearily, "We weren’t tricked; we just took a shortcut. Also, I’m already at the Temple of Hadrian, I can see it."
"..."
"Not waiting for you guys, I’ll make contact first."
Anton sounded utterly confused, "What kind of taxi did you find?"
"Hmm, an unlicensed one. I think you should also get an unlicensed cab. Alright, I need to hang up, contact me when you arrive."
After hanging up, Yang Yi gave a wry smile to Kate and Xiao Ran, "We’ve arrived early."
Xiao Ran murmured softly, "So what if we’re early, contact Justin, let’s find him first."
Yang Yi was already dialing, then placed the phone to his ear. But after the phone ringed thrice without an answer, he quickly hung up.
In a tense situation like fleeing for one’s life, Justin wouldn’t fail to answer the phone unless something was wrong.
Yang Yi started to feel anxious, looked around, and whispered, "He didn’t pick up; something must have happened."
"We don’t know the exact address, right?"
"That’s right, but he must still be in the vicinity. If he had moved and was able to inform me, he would have called me. Now it’s that he can’t get to the phone and has stayed in place... Where could that be..."
Looking around for a week, but just looking was not enough to determine Justin’s whereabouts.
Suddenly, Xiao Ran whispered, "Look at your two o’clock; those two guys are acting suspicious."
Yang Yi looked over and saw two men walking. One had earphones in his ear, and both of them kept scanning the people around them as they moved.
Shortly after, another four people appeared. As the two groups crossed paths, they paused together briefly, then quickly all ran off in the same direction.
Yang Yi gasped and quietly said, "They’ve found Justin! Follow them!"
