Chapter 907: Chapter 912: Gaining Face
Yang Yi called Boer aside.
"Leave this to you. By the time we’re back, I want a plan from you. I know you have ideas, but you need to explicitly tell me how to spend the money and how to make money."
In the last few days, Boer had been in a state of excitement because for Boer, money was not only money; it was also a tool, a weapon.
"I got it. When you return, I’ll give you a detailed plan."
Yang Yi whispered, "Consult with Anna. Start discussing it with her when you make the plans. If you can’t get past her, you probably can’t get past me either."
Boer was surprised and whispered back, "Since when has Annastasia become so important? But okay, I understand. I know what to do."
"Keep a close eye on Steve. Anna will watch Steve closely, but whether Steve is tampering with the money is something only you and Norbert can determine."
"Understood!"
Boer appeared energetic and then asked Yang Yi, "When are you guys leaving?"
"Right now. Our visas are finally sorted. That’s it then, we are setting off."
Yang Yi patted Boer’s shoulder. He had left some things unsaid, but Boer should understand his intent; suddenly entrusting him with managing such a large sum of money meant some implications needed to be conveyed to Boer.
Boer had reasons to monitor Steve, but in truth, Steve was the one who could keep an eye on Boer. It wasn’t that Yang Yi didn’t trust Boer, but because Boer would be finished the moment he left the protection of the Organization of Water, Yang Yi did not want Boer to feel he had absolute power.
Yang Yi stepped out and announced to everyone, "We are setting off."
They were headed to Iraq, but members of the Organization of Water couldn’t carry weapons because they could only travel to Iraq on commercial flights, which meant they couldn’t bring weapons.
Not being able to take weapons to Iraq made everyone feel uneasy.
First, they flew to Dubai, then they would transfer to Baghdad. The process was lengthy, especially under the tension they felt.
Once they got off the plane, Yang Yi immediately felt the heat from the desert.
Baghdad airport could be described as heavily scarred due to the numerous attacks it had suffered. Compared to any other airport Yang Yi had visited, this was by far the emptiest, even more so than any airport in Ukraine.
Walking in such a place where an attack felt imminent and yet having no weapons at hand was truly disconcerting.
Xiao Ran moved closer to Yang Yi and whispered, "Hey, first order of business, we buy guns, right?"
"First to the hotel. We’ll have to wait till Jethro contacts the local dealers before we can buy guns."
Xiao Ran, feeling restless, whispered, "Don’t care how you plan it, just don’t fob me off with an AK; I’m already very annoyed, especially with this turban making me extremely uncomfortable."
Anton was leading the way. He stopped, then slightly turned his head and said, "Hey, if I’m not mistaken, that should be Brian."
Yang Yi and Xiao Ran both looked up and saw Brian standing there, hands pockets.
Brian and his team had departed from Nice, and not on a single flight, the layovers were different too, allowing Brian to arrive in Baghdad two hours early. The issue wasn’t that Brian had come early or that he was waiting at the airport, but the fact that he had three people with him and a convoy lined up behind him was a problem.
There were twelve armored vehicles lined up behind Brian, four of which had gunmen on top, watching the surroundings.
Moreover, there were four people standing by Brian’s side, one of whom was dressed in U.S. Military uniform.
"What’s going on!"
Yang Yi was a bit stunned.
Brian waved at Yang Yi, then put his hand to his mouth and shouted, "Hey, over here!"
Yang Yi sighed, then softly said, "Let’s go over."
Brian being so high-profile meant that there probably wasn’t an issue, but why was there a U.S. Military convoy coming?
As Yang Yi and his group walked over, it wasn’t Brian who spoke but Woody.
Woody waved at Yang Yi, then pointed to an officer next to him and said, "This is my friend, Major Joe Hanet."
Yang Yi was still confused, but the major proactively extended his hand and smiled, "Hello, Mr. Ross, I’m Woody’s friend, and importantly, Woody once saved my life."
It was Woody’s connection?
The usually timid Woody, who played an insignificant role in the Organization of Water, somehow had such influence in Baghdad.
Yang Yi shook hands with Joe and said, "Pleased to meet you."
Joe gestured with his hand and said, "It’s not safe here, we often get attacked. So, I’ve brought a platoon to pick you up. Let’s not talk here anymore, please get in the vehicle. Oh, Mr. Ross, I know you are here in Baghdad for business dealings, no matter what you need, uh, if you need assistance, please speak up, I think many people would be happy to help Woody."
Woody’s reputation was indeed big, yet Woody didn’t seem proud, he still smiled and said, "Let’s hurry and get in the vehicle, it really isn’t safe here."
Yang Yi and Brian boarded an HMMWV multipurpose wheeled armored vehicle—commonly known as a Humvee. After getting in, Yang Yi glanced at the silent stranger next to Brian, then looked at Woody and quietly asked, "Can anyone tell me what’s going on?"
Brian patted Woody, who was sitting next to him, and explained, "Woody has a lot of friends here because he has saved many lives. At the airport, a patrolling officer recognized him, greeted us, and then called Major Joe Hanet to pick us up. It went like this."
After speaking, Brian pointed to the stranger sitting on his other side and introduced, "Let me introduce Stone Statue, a former subordinate of mine, now he is here to assist me."
Yang Yi widened his eyes and said, "Assist you?"
The man called Stone Statue had slightly graying hair and a beard about a centimeter long on his chin, which was obviously not maintained deliberately but due to lack of time.
He wore a clean but faded and misshapen quick-dry shirt, below were khaki pants that had faded to almost white, and he wore a pair of desert boots.
Despite sitting in a moving vehicle, he sat perfectly upright in his seat, indeed like a statue.
Stone Statue’s eyes turned to Yang Yi, and then he said in a deep voice, "Stone Statue, sniper."
Yang Yi was waiting for the man called Stone Statue to speak further, but after waiting for a moment and realizing that Stone Statue had no intention of continuing, he raised his voice slightly and said, "Oh, hi, pleased to meet you."
