Chapter 899: Chapter 904: On the Brink of the Abyss

"Now, the only advantage Yang Yi thought he had — which wasn’t really an advantage — was that the Grey-cloaked People did not know about their animosity toward them.

It might sound a bit convoluted, but the idea was quite clear.

The Grey-cloaked People should have already grasped the relationship between Deyo and Egertoni Company, and after Deyo died, they intended to acquire Deyo’s inheritance, possessing the capability to do so.

Then, the Grey-cloaked People should be aware of Steve’s role and importance.

What would happen next? The Grey-cloaked People could set an ambush at the Egertoni Company, lying in wait just like hunting rabbits. Anyone coming to take over the Egertoni Company would certainly relate to Steve, and then they could find him.

But with that in mind, why would the Grey-cloaked People contact Wayne Rushford first?

Was it to expose themselves intentionally?

Especially since the Grey-cloaked People sent two individuals, both dressed in grey suits?

To expose themselves on purpose, yet not revealing their true identities since it was just two men in grey suits who didn’t claim to be Grey-cloaked People.

The Grey-cloaked People got their name because when they needed to reveal their identity in certain situations, they used grey suits as their inconspicuous uniform, much like how police wear uniforms, and soldiers wear military outfits. But the Grey-cloaked People’s attire left room for speculation yet couldn’t really connect them directly to the organization, because too many people wore grey suits.

Yang Yi developed a headache from all this pondering.

Could it be that the Grey-cloaked People were warning potential adversaries?

But how many in the world knew of the Grey-cloaked People? To wear a grey suit to scare away competitors seemed as realistic as a joke.

Scaring away competitors didn’t make sense, lying in wait didn’t either; if the Grey-cloaked People only aimed to take over Egertoni Company and thought of nothing else, it made even less sense. Yang Yi couldn’t believe the Grey-cloaked People could be that foolish.

Thus, Yang Yi was utterly confused now; he just couldn’t make sense of anything, no matter how he guessed.

It wasn’t until he exited the building, without encountering any obstructions, that Yang Yi felt extremely tense and bewildered upon seeing Hans and Zhang Yong.

Nothing was amiss.

Yang Yi was going mad, his mind swirling faster, plunging further into confusion.

Playing the long game to catch a big fish?

But why would the Grey-cloaked People contact Wayne Rushford first and expose themselves if that was their strategy?

It was utterly unreasonable!

He just couldn’t figure it out.

It wasn’t until Yang Yi got into a car and waited for it to start driving that he felt he was going insane.

"Watch for any followers, no calls! Don’t say anything, not even in the car! Unless you spot someone following us or if we are attacked!"

Yang Yi could only resort to the clumsiest methods for basic protection.

In this era, the means of eavesdropping and tracking were too numerous.

Perhaps Yang Yi and his companions had already had listening devices installed on them, or maybe a sound wave microphone was targeted at their car from a distance, or maybe there were one or several drones overhead, or maybe... the possibilities were endless; it wasn’t safe just because it was their own people.

As the car drove out of London, it seemed like no one was following, but that was just at a glance; no one could guarantee there were no tails.

Yang Yi didn’t even know where to drive the car."

Without saying a word, his mind was in turmoil for a long time, and Yang Yi had finally made his first decision.

Forget about the Grey-cloaked People for now, prioritizing his own safety mattered most. Since they hadn’t attacked immediately, there was a possibility they were playing a long game. Thinking this way led to a plethora of paradoxical explanations, like a paradox itself, but Yang Yi could only think this way now and had to guard against this possibility.

The term "on pins and needles" couldn’t be more suitable to describe Yang Yi at this moment.

Like a frightened bird, Yang Yi drove out of London, and he kept driving south until he reached the seaside.

Not far ahead was the ocean, waves crashing against high cliffs. Below were grass and a small hill, surrounded by meadows. Standing at a high vantage point, one could clearly see if there were any people within a few kilometers range.

It was only after reaching the seaside that Yang Yi felt a sense of safety.

"Change clothes."

Yet even then, Yang Yi did not feel safe. He stripped off his clothes and changed into the spare set he had brought, fearing that entering Wayne Rushford’s office might have resulted in some sophisticated electronic device being planted on him—and not just on him, but everyone needed to change their clothes.

Yang Yi pointed in a direction, and after changing clothes, the group walked at least a thousand meters before daring to stop.

Yang Yi looked up at the sky, but even if there were drones, they were too far away to be noticeable. Yet, everyone stared intently at the sky for a long time. Though still uneasy, this was all Yang Yi could do at this moment.

Don’t laugh at Yang Yi’s caution since facing an enemy like the Grey-cloaked People, anyone who was careless could end up dead.

Moreover, considering what the Organization of Water was capable of, Yang Yi didn’t believe the Grey-cloaked People couldn’t do the same, so he guarded at a standard twice as cautious as the one which the Organization of Water absolutely couldn’t eavesdrop on.

Only after finally feeling safe did Yang Yi whisper, "Everyone, we are in the sight of the Grey-cloaked People."

Yang Yi’s team included Zhang Yong, Hans, and Xiao Ran.

Yang Yi’s words made everyone’s color change.

"The Grey-cloaked People?"

Yang Yi sighed and said, "Yes, two men in grey suits were looking for Wayne Rushford yesterday."

Hans immediately frowned and then said urgently, "The Grey-cloaked People? Why would they..."

"Stop, stop!"

Yang Yi said with a bitter face, "Let’s not talk about this. It gives me a headache. Let’s change the code name for the Grey-cloaked People. From now on, their code name changes from ’villain’ to ’unidentified creatures.’"

The code name "Unidentified Creatures" lacked the strong enemy-ally properties and would give the impression of unknown origins, indeed, selecting this code name was the result of careful deliberation by Yang Yi, all to confuse the enemy.

"Who’s got a cigarette? Give me a smoke, old demon, explain to everyone what happened, I need some quiet."

Yang Yi lit the cigarette and began to smoke fiercely while Anton started explaining the events they had encountered.

By the time Anton finished, Hans was also overwhelmed.

Both Hans and Yang Yi wore constipated expressions as they pondered, while Zhang Yong looked perplexed and said, "That’s it? Is it complicated?"

Anton said in a grave voice, "It’s very complicated."

Hans wore a distressed face and said, "Too complicated? This is simply... inexplicable, why? What do the Grey-cloaked People want?"

Zhang Yong said in a low tone, "Uh, it’s complicated? Uh, are they really the Grey-cloaked People?"

Yang Yi waved his hand, looking troubled, "I can’t figure out the reason, but now I am sure of one thing, we must abandon Deyo’s inheritance. We can take the cash, but none of the businesses or companies—give them up!"
