Chapter 884: Chapter 889: Don’t Give Up
Roman’s leg wasn’t broken, but his left knee had taken a bullet.
The shot passed directly through Roman’s knee, creating a large hole, meaning that Roman’s leg couldn’t be saved. Even if amputation wasn’t necessary, the injured leg was essentially ruined.
Moreover, compared to Vitali’s condition, although Roman wasn’t as critical, he was also losing a lot of blood, just not yet to a lethal extent.
Roman’s face was pale, and he found it difficult to even sit because he felt like he could pass out at any moment, but his concern was for Vitali right now.
Anton was transfusing blood into Roman, who whispered, "What’s happening? Vitali isn’t dead, is he? He can still be saved, right?"
Anton glanced back before speaking in a grave voice, "Vitali has no pulse. I think he’s dead, but I’m not a doctor. Woody says he’s not dead, so he’s not dead."
After a pause, Anton spoke softly, "Where there’s hope, we must try. I believe Vitali is in hemorrhagic shock, definitely. There’s no mistake about that. If... if we were in a fully equipped major hospital, perhaps he might be saved, though the chances aren’t great. But... maybe Woody can work a miracle."
Woody was still operating on Vitali, having located all the major bleeding points and clamped them to stop the bleeding, finally ready for the next step.
"How long has his heart stopped?"
Anton shouted immediately, "Since he was shot... twelve minutes."
"How long since his heartbeat stopped?"
"I don’t know, about ten minutes? The firefight was brief, and I felt his pulse is already gone."
Woody took a breath and said, "Got it. From here on, we leave it in the hands of God. I’m going to use the defibrillator. Turn him over."
The defibrillator was ready, and after turning Vitali over and laying him on the large dining table, Woody picked up the defibrillator just as Yang Yi entered the door.
"What’s the situation?"
Yang Yi was anxious, while Anton just looked at Woody and said, "Vitali’s heartbeat has stopped. Woody has stopped the bleeding, and now he’s about to try to restart his heart."
Yang Yi walked in, took a deep breath, and watched Woody unblinkingly.
"First time."
Vitali’s body jolted, then after checking, Woody said in a deep voice, "Second time."
After another jolt, Woody observed for a moment before putting down the defibrillator and said gravely, "There’s a heartbeat. We don’t have a respirator, so Vitali needs someone to help him breathe. You all know how to perform artificial respiration, right?"
Sergei immediately said, "I’ll do it!"
Woody glanced at a clock, not a wristwatch, but one that was set aside.
"Vitali’s heart stopped for about five minutes, not ten, and that amount of time can already cause brain damage. But I’ve encountered many similar situations before—some result in brain death, while others don’t. The brain may only be mildly damaged and could even recover after a few days of rest. So, it all depends on his luck now."
Woody said casually, "Is Vitali out of danger now?"
Woody shook his head, "No, his condition is still very bad. We’ve only completed the most critical step. There’s still a lot to do. I need at least a few more hours to finish the surgery. Please keep quiet. I need to continue the operation."
Yang Yi didn’t dare to speak again. He looked at Roman and whispered, "Vitali’s surgery will take a few more hours, but what about Roman?"
Anton also spoke softly, "I don’t know, but Woody should know what to do. He’s the doctor. We just need to follow his directions."
About twenty minutes later, Woody left the dining room. He washed his hands thoroughly, then changed his gloves and approached Roman.
Looking at Roman’s leg, Woody sighed, "It’s ruined. We have to amputate."
Roman’s face turned pale. In a low voice, he said, "Buddy, no, doctor, I think there might still be hope for my leg."
Woody raised his hands and shook his head, "Impossible, Roman. You took a bullet to the knee, and the kneecap is completely shattered. Under current medical conditions, there’s no way your leg can be restored to what it was."
After speaking, Woody said with helplessness, "You have to trust me. I don’t have much say when it comes to internal medicine and chronic diseases. For instance, I can’t perform heart surgery, but when it comes to trauma, especially the common injuries on the battlefield, I’m an authority. I’ve performed no fewer than five hundred emergency surgeries. At one point, the U.S. Military in Iraq had me perform two-thirds of all major surgeries. Your injury might not be fatal, but it is crippling."
Roman turned deathly pale, shaking his head in disbelief.
Yang Yi couldn’t help but say, "Woody, you should be... more tactful."
Woody gestured towards the dining room, "There are specialized psychologists for emotional consolation. As for me, I race with death. Sorry, but I have to tell you what you need to know in the shortest possible time. There’s someone else waiting for me to continue surgery."
After saying that, Woody shrugged, "I’m really sorry, but your leg... It’s lost function below the knee. If we don’t amputate, it would merely serve a cosmetic function. Actually, I think switching to a prosthetic might be more convenient after an amputation."
Roman’s voice trembled, "Is there really no hope? I... Even if it’s just for looks, I want to keep my leg..."
Woody nodded, "I understand. I’ll stop the bleeding for now, and after I finish the surgery on Vitali, I’ll clean up your wound. Uh, you can take a nap now. I’ll give you a sedative."
Roman said urgently, "Wait! Wait! I don’t want to sleep. I want to know about Vitali’s condition immediately, not wake up and have someone else tell me!"
Woody nodded, "That’s up to you, but looking at your own leg... uh, I hope you have a strong mental fortitude."
Yang Yi had no qualms about killing, but watching Woody fidget with the bloody hole in Roman’s leg made him feel nauseous.
Yang Yi stepped out of the room, and soon, Brian followed.
"This Woody... he’s pretty good."
Brian offered Yang Yi a cigarette and lit one for himself, then whispered, "We all thought Vitali was dead, but he refused to give up. Now it seems Vitali really might survive. If Woody had been lazy, he could have given up."
Brian took a long breath and then said indifferently, "But for you as the boss, letting Vitali die might be more advantageous than saving him. What do you think?"
Yang Yi took a puff of his cigarette and whispered, "Save Vitali. I know, if Vitali dies, I just have to pay a sum of compensation, which isn’t a lot of money—it’s cheaper and more convenient than saving him. But... I want to save Vitali. I want him to survive. Money isn’t important, a little trouble doesn’t matter. What’s important is that Vitali survives!"
