Chapter 804: Chapter 809: Extortion
Yang Yi made a call to Justin, and once Justin picked up, he casually said, "Buddy, I have two pieces of intelligence to sell you."
"What kind?"
"A comprehensive summary of the daily operations of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense and the intelligence operations of the Ministry of Defense. Same content, two departments. Selling as a package for a total of two million US Dollars."
"Two million? Hmm, I need to see the specific types of intelligence first."
Yang Yi quickly replied, "Hold on, I will send it to you now."
Covering the mouthpiece, Yang Yi told Schultz, "Copy part of the intelligence and send it to Justin’s email."
Soon, Justin sounded very unenthusiastic as he said, "You guys hacked into the Ministry of Defense network, right? Look, buddy, this intelligence is worthless. It can’t be sold. Not for two million, not even for two hundred thousand. I’ll give you one offer— one hundred thousand. Take it or leave it."
"Why can’t it be sold?" Yang Yi asked calmly.
"Because the Russians had this information long ago. If you guys can do it, there’s no reason the Russians can’t. Besides them, who else do you think would be interested? The Eastern Ukrainian Militia? Joking aside, without a massive intelligence analysis team, this kind of intelligence is meaningless."
Yang Yi laughed, then whispered low, "Buddy, that’s not very nice of you."
"How am I not being nice?"
"Because this intelligence isn’t for the Russians; it’s for blackmailing the Ukrainians, especially the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense Intelligence. Maybe they’re strapped for cash and can’t offer much, but I think a few million US Dollars should still be possible."
Justin went silent, then whispering, he said, "What you’re selling is intelligence, and it’s worth one hundred thousand to me. What I do with the intelligence after buying it is my business."
"I understand, but one hundred thousand is obviously too little. Two million is a good number."
Justin scoffed, "You’re overestimating the budget of the Ministry of Defense Intelligence. They’re strapped; managing to muster up one million would be a stretch. As for the Ministry of Defense, they might scrape together another million to keep me quiet. Oh no, I can’t possibly show up in person; that would mess up my future dealings, so I’ll need to get someone to handle this, which also costs money. So, the most I can give is two hundred thousand. Only two hundred thousand!"
"Five hundred thousand! Give me half a million and I’ll sell it to you."
"For half a million, I might as well hire a hacker myself; it would be much cheaper than buying from you."
Undeterred, Yang Yi stated, "After I downloaded it, I immediately blocked this path, letting the Ukrainians know their network is like a sieve."
"That’s despicable! That’s no way to do business. Plus, if you block the way first, then I can’t sell the intelligence at a good price after."
After a moment’s thought, Yang Yi said, "Fine, then two hundred thousand. Pay now and I’ll send the package immediately."
Justin quickly responded, "Deal. The money will be sent immediately, and you send the intelligence right after."
Justin ended the call, and Schultz quietly remarked, "Boss, two hundred thousand seems too low."
Yang Yi smiled, "Not low, not low at all. It’s easy money; it’s good enough."
Less than ten minutes later, Justin called back, then said sternly, "The money has been transferred. Send the data."
Yang Yi told Schultz, "Send all the data."
Shortly after, Yang Yi said, "Everything has been sent. Check it, and oh, one more thing."
"What is it?"
"We are making a move on Mark Schappo. He’s currently in Donetsk, and we need to find a way to get him back here."
Justin was slightly excited as he replied, "Then hurry up, make your move!"
"Yes, but there’s one issue. I just sent you the intelligence which includes moving Mark Sharpo back here. So, you need to find a way to spread that intelligence."
Justin was silent for a while, then he asked sternly, "Wait a minute, wait! Are you saying that I just spent two hundred thousand US Dollars on intelligence that I need to deliberately leak, creating an emergency so Mark Schappo has to leave Donetsk for Kyiv to make it easier for you to hit him? Did I get that right?"
"Uh, yes, exactly right."
Justin cursed furiously, "Fuck! You tricked me!"
Yang Yi immediately responded, "No no no, we just completed a transaction, and it was successful. Now, we are discussing something else. I don’t know what you mean by tricking you."
"You sold me intelligence that needs to be deliberately leaked, worthless intelligence, and you’re saying you didn’t trick me?"
Yang Yi helplessly said, "Please, this is a separate issue. The intelligence has already been sold to you. How you use it is entirely your business. I can in no way force you, nor would I try, and I definitely won’t leak it myself, as the intelligence now belongs to you. So I’m asking you, asking for your help. If you refuse, there’s nothing I can do, so how can this be considered tricking you?"
"Fine, I refuse to help. You’ll have to find another way."
Yang Yi smiled, "No problem, that’s fair. But with Mark Schappo in Donetsk, it’s too risky for us to make a move there. I can’t go to Donetsk myself, so if you won’t help, we’ll just have to wait for another opportunity. I don’t think it’ll take long to find another chance."
Taking a deep breath, Justin clenched his teeth and said, "Sea God, you’ve learned some bad tricks!"
Yang Yi seriously responded, "I don’t understand what you mean. I am a highly ethical intelligence officer. I don’t understand what you mean by ’learned some bad tricks.’"
"Enough!"
Annoyed, Justin shouted then said, "I will spread the intelligence, and by tomorrow morning the whole world will know."
"Oh, thank you, thank you for your help."
Knowing Justin would be eager to act quickly, Yang Yi was sure Justin would disclose the information which was, after all, the inevitable outcome.
Taking a deep breath, Justin who had been outmaneuvered, said to Yang Yi, "Wait for my message. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up."
Once Justin had hung up, Shultz looked puzzled and said, "Boss, isn’t it bad to play Justin like that?"
Yang Yi shook his head, "It’s not bad. We haven’t offended Justin, because if I were to sell this intelligence back to the Ministry of Defense Intelligence, I’d have to get at least one million US dollars. That’s our covert cost. I only asked him for two hundred thousand as a gesture, so this just lets him know I’m not inexperienced. We’re the ones at a loss here, but now Justin knows we understand the inside tricks, and that’s enough."
