Chapter 709: Chapter 715 Ambition

Big Ivan was in Eastern Ukraine; the source of this intelligence was unclear, but the mere fact that he was heading there spelled trouble.

All the preparatory work of the Organization of Water was conducted in Kyiv. Going to Eastern Ukraine wasn’t impossible, but all the preparations they had made would become useless.

On the return journey, Jethro remained silent for a long time.

Jethro undoubtedly had ambitions, although he had always concealed them well, Jethro definitely harbored aspirations.

His ambitions weren’t grandiose; they merely involved making Ukraine his own turf. For Jethro, this was already the best possible outcome.

In Deyo’s arms group, Jethro essentially played the role of a procurement officer, at most a manager of the procurement department. Despite it being a profitable position, the power it wielded wasn’t substantial. It was only because Jethro had consistently performed well that he was given a chance to stand out in the war between Deyo and Big Ivan—nothing more.

The relative weakness of Jethro’s position was apparent in their strength. Corkdor wielded great power, Ferdinand controlled the force, and Jethro was only in charge of money management. Although important, it didn’t compare to the other two.

Jethro could only pin his hopes on Yang Yi; if Yang Yi and his team killed Big Ivan, then naturally Jethro would be credited with the primary achievement. But now, with the need to head to Eastern Ukraine, the arrangements made by Yang Yi and his team lost their significance, and Jethro’s mood was no better than Yang Yi’s.

"To think we have to go to Eastern Ukraine, this complicates things..."

After a long while, Jethro sighed deeply and shook his head, saying, "If we go to Eastern Ukraine, we lose all our advantages. In Eastern Ukraine, whoever has the military force is the boss, and we can’t compete with Ferdinand."

Yang Yi said in a low voice, "As expected. I wouldn’t be surprised at all that Big Ivan is in Eastern Ukraine. But even Ferdinand might not have it easy, right? Although he has the most people, Corkdor is the one in control this time. Even if you and Ferdinand perform well, the credit will go to Corkdor."

"Yes, unless..." Jethro whispered, then shook his head, not finishing his sentence, but Yang Yi continued, "Unless Corkdor dies, and Ferdinand dies too."

Jethro remained silent, consenting to Yang Yi’s suggestion with his silence.

"Why don’t we just kill Corkdor!"

Jethro looked at Yang Yi and then sighed, "Kill Corkdor? I’ve thought about it, but it’s impossible. Ukraine’s top brass are all connected to Corkdor. Now is not the time for internal strife. If we killed Big Ivan and fought for the spoils of victory, killing Corkdor would be meaningful. But now, just as we’ve found Big Ivan’s whereabouts, rushing to kill Corkdor, what would be the point?"

With a sigh, Jethro helplessly said, "Let it go. Killing Corkdor would even eliminate the little hope we have now. Corkdor is a decent man, someone who gets things done. If we kill him now, Deyo will just replace him with someone else. I’ve seen through it; Deyo won’t hand over power to me."

Yang Yi fell silent for a moment, then said softly, "Then let’s kill Ferdinand first."

Jethro didn’t say a word, and Yang Yi continued in a solemn voice, "There are three players in Ukraine right now, which is too many. If Corkdor’s position is untouchable, then we kill Ferdinand. As long as you can take over Ferdinand’s men, your status will rise substantially. And crucially, it won’t affect the overall situation. With Corkdor here, Deyo won’t send anyone else to take over Ferdinand’s duties; you are the best candidate, the only candidate."

"If Corkdor takes over the men brought by Ferdinand..."

After saying only a few words, Jethro whispered, "No, Corkdor isn’t suited for combat. He can only stay in Kyiv to control the overall situation. At this critical junction, if Ferdinand dies, then I’m the one who has to lead the troops to Eastern Ukraine."

"So, kill Ferdinand!" Yang Yi said solemnly.

Half for Jethro’s sake and half for his own, Yang Yizhen genuinely wanted to kill Ferdinand.

Yang Yi had always felt that he owed Jethro. If he could help Jethro, he would be pleased, and even if Jethro took over Ferdinand’s troops, the person he trusted most could only still be him.

If they had to go to Eastern Ukraine to confront Big Ivan and coordinate with Ferdinand, of course, it would be better for him to take direct control of those men.

After a moment of silence between them, Jethro in a low voice said, "We need to plan this carefully. The most crucial thing is it can’t disrupt the big picture. We must be able to utilize Ferdinand’s men right after taking them over."

"Ferdinand’s main force is the Fearless Mercenary Corps, and a portion are direct subordinates of Deyo. As for Ferdinand’s own people, there are hardly any. Do you think the Fearless Mercenary Corps will be easy to control?"

"As long as we pay them, the Fearless Mercenary Corps won’t be a problem. We’ll need to win over Deyo’s loyal subordinates. And as for Ferdinand’s people..."

Touching his chin, Jethro said softly, "Fortunate that there aren’t many of Ferdinand’s own people."

If there weren’t many, they could all be taken out together.

Jethro turned to look at Yang Yi and said in a low voice, "The only issue is, do we have the strength to kill Ferdinand?"

"Ferdinand has men and guns, and his personal security is very tight. But killing him isn’t too difficult because we don’t need to mount a direct assault. A single bullet can claim his life."

"The key is to ensure that no one realizes we did it."

"Even if they know we did it, so what?"

After a moment of contemplation, Jethro whispered, "No, Robot, you’re still too young."

Yang Yi didn’t speak, and Jethro continued quietly, "One can’t be too arrogant. Yes, with the current situation, even if we kill Ferdinand, Deyo won’t have time to send someone to replace him. But what about after? Maybe Deyo has to tolerate it for now, but when the war subsides, he will never allow me to keep living. It doesn’t matter to Deyo whether there’s proof; all he needs is suspicion, and I would be as good as dead unless I betray Deyo. But I don’t have that strength."

It wasn’t that Yang Yi hadn’t considered this; he just needed to let Jethro think that he hadn’t. A ruthless and meticulous image didn’t suit the role Yang Yi was playing now. So in front of Jethro, all he needed to do was advocate for forceful measures. The more complex matters were best left to Jethro to ponder.

"So what do we do? As long as Ferdinand dies, you’ll be the prime suspect anyway. Are we to do nothing just because of that?"

Jethro let out a deep breath and said in a low voice, "That’s why we need to plan well. We must disassociate ourselves at all costs, leave no evidence whatsoever—that’s fundamental. More importantly, we need to ensure that Deyo won’t suspect me, but that’s difficult. How should we go about it?"
