Chapter 605: Chapter 613: Notorious Reputation
It’s not scary for a person to be petty, but when someone like Big Ivan becomes notoriously petty, then it truly is terrifying.
This is Ukraine, not the United States, and Big Ivan’s notoriety means that if he were dead, everything would be simple, but the problem is there’s no evidence to prove that Big Ivan is indeed dead, so although Ukraine has changed, Big Ivan’s allies still exert significant influence over the country. Therefore, Jethro’s life won’t be easy, and needless to say, neither will Yang Yi’s. It’s simple logic.
Yang Yi had heard about Big Ivan countless times and had spoken of him as well, but his understanding of Big Ivan was limited to legends. Although he had already imagined Big Ivan as a vengeful arms dealer, Yang Yi’s curiosity about him grew even more.
After all, Big Ivan wasn’t Yang Yi’s enemy; Deyo was. And although it was Justin who dealt with the intel purchase, in the end, it was Big Ivan who paid for Deyo’s address.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, so Yang Yi was truly curious about Big Ivan, to the point where he even considered finding an opportunity to cooperate with Big Ivan and get rid of Deyo together.
Out of curiosity, and in the desire to learn more about Big Ivan, Yang Yi asked Jethro in a low voice, "What exactly has Big Ivan done to make people so fearful of him? I mean, what specific things has he done?"
Jethro was silent for a moment, then spoke softly, "Recently, the CIA moved against Big Ivan. They captured Big Ivan’s East Asia regional head in Thailand, and they managed to turn that person, extracting Big Ivan’s residential address in South Africa, and during a meetup with Big Ivan, they seized him."
Yang Yi was surprised and said, "They captured Big Ivan?"
Jethro nodded, sighed, and said, "Capturing Big Ivan was a decisive turning point. If everything had gone according to the Americans’ plan, then all of this should have been over by now, but, but..."
"Big Ivan escaped? How is that possible! How could the CIA let him escape after capturing him?"
Jethro gave a helpless sigh and said, "Yes, Big Ivan escaped, but to be precise, he wasn’t the one who escaped; he was rescued. Right there in the U.S. consulate in South Africa, someone infiltrated, armed with a pistol and killed six people."
Yang Yi didn’t show much reaction, and Jethro sighed and continued, "Perhaps I’m not being clear. Someone dressed as a doctor infiltrated with a pepper-box pistol and killed six guards watching over Big Ivan, then successfully rescued Big Ivan. To add one more thing, that person killed six people with a pepper-box pistol that had no sights, all in 1.8 seconds."
"That’s impossible!"
Yang Yi instinctively refuted Jethro’s words, then immediately gestured with his hands and said, "No, no, no, that’s just not possible. You’re joking, right? Firing six shots in 1.8 seconds and each one killing a person, haha, that’s a bit ridiculous!"
Jethro said solemnly, "I haven’t seen the surveillance video myself, but Deyo has. This video has become a miraculous feat long studied by the CIA. It can’t be fake."
Yang Yi thought for a moment, but still couldn’t help saying, "How is that possible."
Jethro waved his hand and said, "The gunman isn’t the point; the point is that Big Ivan has escaped. Even though the Americans launched another attack on Big Ivan right after, it was all too late, Big Ivan had gotten away."
"They had him captured and he still managed to escape, this..."
Jethro continued, "The CIA found a person in the garden of the villa where Big Ivan was staying."
"Hmm?"
"A person, considered to be raised like a dog."
"Ah?"
Jethro took a long sigh, and said in a low voice, "Strange, right? There was a person raised like a dog in the garden, chained up with an iron chain, and given a doghouse to live in—literally a doghouse, a real doghouse."
"Oh, shit..."
"The CIA rescued this person, but no one knew who he was. Later on, the CIA found out that the man treated like a dog was Big Ivan’s enemy, and his name was Heilcoff."
"What do you mean?"
Jethro took another deep breath, then whispered, "Heilcoff was also an arms dealer who wanted to take out Big Ivan. So, he was the mastermind behind the bombing that killed Big Ivan’s wife and children. Big Ivan killed his wife and two children, killed his mistress, killed his father, and about twenty more of his relatives."
Even an outsider could sense the bloodiness contained in the string of murders being described.
Just when Yang Yi thought it was over, Jethro continued, "Heilcoff got caught by Big Ivan—taken alive. Then Heilcoff’s two bastards died, another mistress too, followed by about fifty of his friends and subordinates."
Yang Yi couldn’t help but swallow hard, and said, "That’s really brutal."
"Brutal? Don’t you understand what I’m talking about? Everyone thought Heilcoff was dead, but that dog-like person was Heilcoff. Big Ivan didn’t kill him; instead, he kept him like a dog for fifteen years in South Africa!"
Yang Yi didn’t know what to say.
Jethro said in a low voice, "If Heilcoff got sick, they treated him. If he refused to eat, they fed him like they would force-feed a duck. That’s how Big Ivan kept Heilcoff for fifteen years."
"It’s worse than death..."
"Exactly, Heilcoff thought so too."
Jethro chuckled and said, "After the CIA rescued Heilcoff and confirmed his identity, the first thing they did was to get him medical treatment because Heilcoff was still valuable, at least as evidence against Big Ivan. But after he was taken to the hospital, as soon as the chains were off, the first thing he did was jump out of the window from the fifth floor."
"Did he die?"
"He died, you’re right. The one thing Heilcoff hoped for the most over those fifteen years was death, but he couldn’t die. So, when he finally got the chance, he didn’t say a word. From being saved to dying, he didn’t say a single word, because Heilcoff had lost the ability to speak. And when he found an appropriate opportunity, he ended his life without hesitation, without a second thought, because death was what he had longed for."
"Liberation."
"Yes, liberation. But Heilcoff’s liberation is an endless fear for others. Big Ivan will surely seek revenge, and no one knows how he will retaliate. So for both the United States and Deyo, Big Ivan must die. But the trouble is Big Ivan hasn’t died yet; he’s just disappeared. And nobody knows whether Big Ivan is dead or alive. A Big Ivan who isn’t dead is too terrifying, really too terrifying..."
