Chapter 593: Chapter 601: New Contract
Jethro took a call and came back quickly, his expression neither particularly good nor outright bad; to be precise, his face was devoid of emotion.
But the absence of genuine joy meant that Jethro hadn’t achieved the result he desired.
After returning to his seat and sitting for a while, Jethro finally said in a low voice, "I can go home now, or I can go and become Ferdinand’s assistant."
Boya was stunned, he looked at Yang Yi, but in the end, he couldn’t help saying, "Ferdinand, that Dutchman, why him? What makes him qualified!"
Jethro sighed deeply, then he raised his head and said solemnly, "Because he has carved out his own territory through combat, he knows how to fight and I don’t, those were Deyo’s exact words."
With a somewhat bitter smile, Jethro continued, "Deyo hopes that I can go to Ukraine to assist Ferdinand, as I’m slightly more familiar with the situation in Ukraine, but Deyo didn’t force me to go. I’m thinking about whether I should agree to go to Ukraine."
Yang Yi remained silent, while Boya indignantly said, "No! Let Ferdinand handle it himself. Let’s see what the so-called war-ready Ferdinand can achieve in Ukraine."
Jethro let out a wry laugh, then he looked at Yang Yi and said, "I’ll settle your payment today, according to the amount we previously agreed upon."
Yang Yi said in a low voice, "Thank you, after all, we didn’t do anything."
Jethro said no more, only delved into a long contemplation before whispering, "To go, or not to go..."
Yang Yi was truly disappointed because Jethro wasn’t the person Deyo had chosen.
If Jethro had been put in charge, it would have been a goldmine of intelligence, but if Jethro was just someone’s assistant, it would still be valuable, but the importance would be far less. Moreover, the timeliness of some critical information couldn’t be guaranteed.
For example, if Deyo’s men were to attack a target, if Jethro was in charge, Yang Yi could be well-informed about the details of the target in advance, but if Jethro was only an assistant, it was likely that he would only know where the target was just before the attack commences.
Therefore, Jethro going to Ukraine or not didn’t seem to hold great significance for Yang Yi anymore, it didn’t matter if he didn’t go. However, if Jethro decided to still go to Ukraine, Yang Yi would definitely follow.
After a short contemplation, Jethro said with a smile, "Opportunities are always reserved for those who are prepared, I’ll go to Ukraine."
Jethro spoke with determination, and Boyata opened his mouth but ultimately said nothing.
"Now then, let’s discuss our remuneration going forward."
Yang Yi was the one who initiated the conversation because, to be a qualified leader of a Mercenary Group, one must seek benefits for his brothers. If he straightforwardly stated indifference to the amount of money and they would follow Jethro no matter what, Jethro would suspect he was either insane or had ulterior motives.
Unwarranted offers of help, up to no good, whether in the East or the West, everyone understands this.
Yang Yi calmly said to Jethro, "Mr. Jethro, we’ve enjoyed working with you. If you have to pay our wages yourself, I can accept a reduction, but not too much. Too little and it would be hard to explain to my brothers."
After pondering for a moment, Jethro said, "How does one thousand dollars a day sound?"
Yang Yi laughed and said, "This price is outrageous, but you might as well first tell us what we’re going to do. After all, the pay differs depending on the mission."
"Protect me, I won’t let you go into battle. You just need to ensure my protection."
Yang Yi shook his head and replied, "Impossible, protecting you can’t be just a thousand dollars a day. Mr. Jethro, we may have different assessments of danger, but I believe that in Ukraine, ensuring your safety amidst your conflict with Big Ivan, without a daily wage of over two thousand plus a separate combat bonus, is absolutely unacceptable."
Jethro fell silent. Two thousand dollars per day for each person, plus the combat bonus, added up to a significant sum.
But Yang Yi’s request was reasonable, and if Jethro couldn’t afford it, that was his problem. He couldn’t accuse Yang Yi of asking for the moon, because for Trident’s capabilities, two thousand dollars per person per day was definitely a friendship price.
Jethro couldn’t bargain anymore over the two thousand dollars Yang Yi asked for, because it was indeed very low. Hence, a lower wage meant a higher combat bonus was a must. After mulling it over for a moment, Jethro said gravely, "Then how much for the combat bonus?"
"Starting at ten thousand dollars, per person, up to a maximum of one hundred thousand. I believe it’s fair."
Jethro exhaled and then extended his hand, saying, "Not cheap, but worth it."
Yang Yi and Jethro shook hands, and Yang Yi smiled, "You’ve made a wise decision. Uh, I seem to have forgotten to tell you something, so you can still reconsider your decision now. We’ve recruited some new people who are currently in Ukraine. Rest assured of their capabilities, definitely stronger than the Trident group you’ve met before."
Jethro frowned and asked, "How many people?"
Yang Yi did some quick calculations. McDonald and Hans had to be discounted as they weren’t combat personnel. That left himself, Brian, Paul, Xiao Ran, Kate, Zhang Yong, Chris, Rodriguez, as well as Roman, Vitali, Sergei. But whether to include Anton in the ranks of the Trident Mercenary Group, that needed some thought.
Anton was very skilled, but it seemed a waste to use him as a front-line mercenary. He would likely be more effective operating in the shadows, but after only brief consideration, Yang Yi decided to still have Anton show up because that way, Anton could be close to Jethro.
"We have twelve people. Aside from us, everyone else is in Ukraine."
Twelve people would amount to twenty-four thousand dollars a day, plus the combat bonus, not a small sum at all. If Jethro had to pay this out of his own pocket, he could manage it short term but it would become difficult to sustain in the long run.
But if Jethro wanted to seek opportunities in Ukraine, he had to hire the Trident Mercenary Group; otherwise, he would truly be a commander without an army.
Nodding, Jethro said in a serious tone, "Twelve people is no problem. More people definitely has its advantages. So, it’s settled then, starting tomorrow we will calculate by the new pay."
Yang Yi sighed and asked, "When are we going to Ukraine?"
Jethro smiled and said, "Today, after lunch we prepare to leave."
Yang Yi said, "Since we’ve accepted your employment, can we talk about this Ferdinand you mentioned?"
Jethro shrugged and replied, "Ferdinand is very young. He’s already the big boss of several markets in Africa, and all the bases from which he operates are ones he’s fought for. Young and able to fight, as for the rest, well, you’ll know when you meet him. You’ll definitely meet him."
