Spy-x-War Showdown -
Chapter 525 - 513: The Sacred Goal
Chapter 525: Chapter 513: The Sacred Goal
Yang Yizhen truly felt exhausted at heart.
Everyone in the room stood up, and Zhang Yong silently drew his pistol. Although he did not raise the gun, his gaze was fixed on Anton.
One would understand if they knew about Brian’s past: if Anton truly was the Black Devil, there could be no peace between him and Anton.
Although Anton was now a comrade, there are still distinctions of closeness in human relationships, so Zhang Yong knew this matter could not end well. In the end, it might conclude with mutual gunfire and death, so of course, he would side with Brian.
No matter what past grievances or complications existed between Brian and Anton, when it comes to a fatal showdown between one of their own and someone relatively unknown, the right move is to be ready with a gun, not to mediate, because this isn’t an argument—it’s about life and death.
Yang Yi shouted out, but he did not rush to draw his gun, not even when Zhang Yong had his drawn yet not raised.
As long as shots were fired, both Brian and Anton were certain to die—but only the two of them, because neither would give the other any chance to dodge, especially with Paul nearby.
Without further insistence on anyone lowering their gun, Yang Yi knew that once guns were drawn, it was no longer a situation where words could make them be put away.
Anton remained silent, but Brian said with a calm face, "What, don’t know how to answer?"
Anton’s hand was steady as he said indifferently, "I don’t want to die, so I haven’t fired yet. I know you don’t want to die because you have unfulfilled dreams, but you must apologize."
"Although reluctant, I have no choice. Furthermore, I admit you indeed fooled me, or else you would be dead before you could turn around."
Pausing, with a mocking look Brian said, "To think you had no reaction even after hearing Yarebin’s name, you’re impressive."
Anton retorted coldly, "I don’t know who Yarebin is, this is your last warning, apologize."
The corners of Brian’s mouth curved slightly as he said, "You think..."
Yang Yi’s heart trembled because he knew Brian was about to shoot.
Brian never smiles when pointing his gun at someone - not even in mockery - unless he plans to confuse his enemy and fire.
Zhang Yong was looking at Anton, and when he noticed Anton’s determined eyes suddenly turn cold, devoid of any emotion, he knew something bad was about to happen.
"Sorry, does this count as infighting?"
The one who suddenly spoke up was McDonald, who raised his hands and said, "It’s a shame to encounter infighting just after joining. I think you shouldn’t be in a rush to shoot. I don’t mean to play peacemaker, but in such situations, my usual choice is to make a decision only after things are clear."
McDonald stood up and shrugged, "Maybe he really isn’t the Black Devil, and you, I don’t know what dreams you haven’t had time to fulfill yet, but to die like this, you’d surely feel resentful, right?"
McDonald’s interjection temporarily eased the impending tragedy. Yang Yi raised his hands and said loudly, "Gentlemen, let’s not hurry to shoot, please, no one move. You must both be confident in your skills, right? Great, since both of you are sure you can take the other down, then let’s not be hasty, alright?"
Taking a deep breath, Yang Yi addressed Anton, "Mate, we’re not exactly close, but you should know me by now. I promise I won’t kill you if you put your gun down, okay? Brian, listen, what you’re after is important, you can’t die here. Even if Anton is the Black Devil, he surely isn’t who you’re looking for, right? Okay, I’m going to start walking slowly between you. If you fire, I’ll die, but then I’ll block the bullets. Anton, when I’m between your guns, you can take the chance to leave, okay?"
Yang Yi took a slow first step, then a second, and just then, Anton suddenly said, "Apologize!"
Yang Yi leaped forward and positioned himself in front of Anton, arms raised.
Paul could shoot Anton, Anton couldn’t shoot Brian, but Yang Yi would most certainly die.
Yang Yi took a deep breath, of course he was nervous. Knowing Anton was a heartless guy who didn’t care about human life, including his own, not being nervous would be foolish.
With his arms up, Yang Yi addressed Anton, "Now you walk out the door. I don’t want to spout grand principles, but don’t you have any regrets dying here? You and he can take your time chasing each other down. That would be quite exciting, wouldn’t it? Please, for the sake of our fairly pleasant interactions, walk out."
If possible, Yang Yi hoped someone would suddenly put a bullet in the back of Anton’s head, but no one here could take him down without giving him a chance to react. So no one dared make a move.
Yang Yi had no hope of resolving the tension between Brian and Anton, nor of keeping Anton. All he could do was prevent Brian from dying at Anton’s hand, and Anton living was just an added bonus.
Anton showed no sign of backing down, and the worst part was that he had stopped talking.
Just then, Brian said coldly, "You really shouldn’t be standing there."
Brian’s implication was clear—he had no intention of apologizing.
Yang Yi was close to tears as he said with a trembling voice, "Please, you guys aren’t so inflexible, right? Taking measures to avoid the worst outcome due to the situation is more reasonable, pursuing the most advantageous position is what you should be doing, right? You’re not emotionless, are you? Why... why put my life on the line for a single sentence? Please, I don’t want to die."
Brian slowly said, "Move!"
Anton said in a deep voice, "Move! This doesn’t concern you, I don’t want to waste a bullet on you."
Yang Yi’s voice trembled as he spoke, "Give me some face, please, won’t anyone say something?"
Kate and Xiao Ran suddenly moved into action, both of them walking over together.
Paul said sternly, "Back off!"
Zhang Yong cleared his throat twice and said loudly, "Nobody moves, I’m warning you all—don’t move, one move and it’s all over. Actually, I feel my life isn’t worth much anymore, so please don’t move!"
After speaking, Zhang Yong quickly ran up to Anton, stopping about two or three meters away from him, faced Anton, and slowly said, "Listen to me, Yarebin is a..."
Yang Yi exclaimed anxiously, "Shut up, are you crazy!"
"Son of a b*tch raised by a bitch."
Zhang Yong finished his sentence slowly, but Anton had no reaction.
Zhang Yong suddenly let out a sigh of relief and laughed, "Haha, it’s all right now, see, it’s fine. I apologize, I apologize on behalf of Brian. Actually, he’s not targeting Black Devil; it’s really Yarebin he’s against, right?"
Zhang Yong turned around to look at Brian saying, "Hey, say something, you really want me dead? You’re not that heartless, are you?"
Brian took a deep breath; he had to cave because while Anton was a lone bachelor, Brian truly couldn’t watch Yang Yi die.
Brian took another deep breath and said quietly, "Alright, I apologize."
It’s true that you can’t afford to have attachments, because once you do, you have a weakness—and that couldn’t be truer.
Brian actually apologized, and upon hearing Brian’s apology, Anton immediately put away his gun.
Anton lowered his gun, and Zhang Yong, with a wry smile, asked Anton, "F*ck! Why didn’t you leave?"
Anton replied indifferently, "Because he apologized, my goal has been achieved. Also, I am not Black Devil."
Brian frowned because he really couldn’t understand what was going on with Anton.
Casting a sideways glance at Brian and noticing his expression, Paul finally also put his gun away, and Kate hurried over to pull Yang Yi back to safety.
Xiao Ran said furiously, "What the hell is this? What is happening!"
Finally, Brian said, "No, you are Black Devil, I don’t know why you won’t admit it, but you definitely are Black Devil!"
After pondering for a moment, Anton nodded and said, "Alright, I am Black Devil."
Zhang Yong’s expression froze, and then he immediately shouted, "Nobody move! Please, everybody stay still, don’t move, absolutely don’t move."
Anton continued calmly, "For ten years, after I completed all the training of Black Devil, after I passed all the assessments of Black Devil, when I was about to formally join Black Devil, the Soviet Union was gone, and Black Devil... was gone."
Casting a casual glance at Brian, Anton continued, "While I don’t consider myself to be Black Devil, if you insist that I am, then fine. Whatever grudge you have with Black Devil is none of my business, I don’t plan to remove an enemy for a no longer existing Black Devil, but do not insult Black Devil in front of me, because that was the goal I strived for, for ten years!"
Pressing his lips together, Anton said solemnly, "A sacred goal!"
All was silent.
After a long while, Brian spoke in an emotionless tone, "I knew I wasn’t wrong. Once you stopped pretending to be something you’re not, you revealed your true nature which no longer holds any human emotions. I saw it when I first saw you in prison."
"Cough cough."
After coughing twice, Zhang Yong took a breath and said, "That was really scary, man. You spent ten years on it? You don’t look that old."
Anton replied coldly, "At the age of ten, I entered the military school. At thirteen, I was selected for a special class. By fifteen, from a class of sixty-four, only I remained. Then someone told me I was the chosen one. After that, I spent another ten years working towards my dream, that sacred goal."
Brian said with a smile, "And then you became a machine devoid of humanity."
Anton replied indifferently, "As my dream was about to come true, I forever lost my sacred goal. What is lost, I will not try to reclaim, but you cannot insult Black Devil in front of me. Also, I am satisfied with my current job, I’m not thinking of quitting, so do not try to test my patience, or else I will become your nightmare."
Brian smirked, "Nightmare? I’ve been living one for decades, but not the kind you’re thinking of, because you do not yet know what a true nightmare is."
Yang Yi quickly cleared his throat twice and said, "I am curious about what kind of unit Black Devil actually is, to have let you train for ten years, no, actually it should be fifteen years. Isn’t that a bit too much?"
