Chapter 477: Chapter 465 No Opportunity
Thirty-three tons of gold.
Thirty-three tons!
Thirty-three tons of gold is worth over a billion US dollars, which isn’t much to a large country, but to ordinary people, it’s money they couldn’t earn in ten lifetimes. Even for those corporations with assets worth tens of billions of dollars, how many could actually come up with a few billion US dollars?
Not to mention that this gold had come from illicit trade.
These days, even those with substantial businesses might not have so much liquid capital. Several billion, or a dozen billion US dollars—very few could spare that kind of money. And yet, there was a consulting firm based in East Asia that could. What did that imply?
It meant something was off.
The words from Yang Yi cut through the silence on the other end of the phone. After a moment, the voice on the phone asked in a low tone, "Thirty-three tons of gold?"
"Yes, thirty-three tons of gold, taken at sixty percent of market price. The transaction occurred at a military airport in Poland, with on-site inspection and payment."
There was silence again on the phone before the low voice asked, "When did this happen?"
"About eight hours ago. I didn’t have the chance to pass on the message then."
"Eight hours, I understand. Is there anything else you need to add?"
"Yes, I can provide sketches of everyone I saw, but it will take some time to draw them. However, I can get you the leader’s portrait in about an hour. Also, this deal is tied to the lives of many people; I shouldn’t be revealing this, but I hope you’ll keep your promise."
"The cleaner thanks you for your information. Please trust in the reputation of the cleaner."
Yang Yi exhaled and said quietly, "Please check on this Anderson Company as soon as possible and if there’s any result, could you share it with me?"
After a brief silence on the phone, the voice replied softly, "I’ll consult with my superiors and contact you later. Please send the portrait as soon as possible."
"No problem."
After hanging up the phone, Yang Yi exhaled and then handed the phone to Xiao Ran, saying quietly, "We’ll contact them again later. Right now, I need to get these sketches done quickly."
Xiao Ran nodded and then said softly, "You look exhausted."
"Yeah, I am tired, but I can’t rest. There are many people I’ve only seen briefly; I have to get them drawn quickly. I’m so hungry... no wonder I’m feeling dizzy..."
Xiao Ran immediately said, "I’ll get you something to eat."
Yang Yi waved his hand and said, "No rush, Xiao Ran, I think your thinking is quite dangerous."
Xiao Ran, puzzled, looked at Yang Yi and asked, "What’s dangerous?"
Yang Yi lowered his voice and said, "You’re a representative of the cleaners. You should be thinking of the cleaners, not the Organization of Water."
Xiao Ran’s eyebrows shot up, and she said coldly, "What do you mean? Do you think I joined you to be a mole?"
Yang Yi sighed and said quietly, "How could you not understand? You’re not here as an undercover agent. I know your identity, so how could you be one? You’re a supervisory presence. Do you get it? To put it plainly, you’re here to watch me, arranged by the cleaners."
Xiao Ran turned her head away and sighed softly, "I..."
Yang Yi pressed his temple and said with a sense of resignation, "The cleaner employed you, sent you to the Organization of Water. Why do you think that is? It’s not possible for you to be a mole because your identity is obvious. The cleaner’s main purpose is to use you as a conduit for communication. My target is the Grey-cloaked People, so I will definitely be watching them. The moment I find something, I’ll inform the cleaner. The enemy of my enemy is my friend—this I understand, and so does the cleaner. They’re not worried about us withholding information on the Grey-cloaked People, but..."
Yang Yi looked at Xiao Ran and spoke in a low voice, "But if we get hold of information and don’t inform the cleaner, it means I’m of no use, of no value for cooperation. You’re different, your roots are still with the cleaner. If you abandon the main task given to you by the cleaner, then it’s betrayal."
Xiao Ran said softly, "I understand the logic, but it feels terrible."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "We have no conflict of interest with the cleaner—quite the opposite, we have common goals, shared interests. So you should play the role of intermediary well."
Xiao Ran smiled and said, "If you perform well, you could soon become a collaborator with the cleaner, maybe even a client. Then there’d be no need for me to pass messages. Don’t you see?"
Pointing at herself, Xiao Ran said, "Actually, I’m just a reject the cleaner doesn’t care about."
Yang Yi shrugged and said, "It’s their loss for lacking foresight. Forget about it for now, get me something to eat. I need to get drawing."
Yang Yi began to sketch, relying on his memory to bring Lloyd’s likeness to paper.
Sketching Lloyd wasn’t an issue since Yang Yi had a strong impression of him. What worried him was the potential inaccuracies in his memory of the others, leading to mistakes. It wasn’t enough to draw familiar faces; he had to capture each person exactly as if he’d taken a photo, which was challenging.
Fortunately, Yang Yi had written down every individual’s features beforehand. So, even if his memory was a bit fuzzy, those key words would help him recall the details.
Halfway through his drawing, Xiao Ran brought in some food. Yang Yi wolfed down the food, and almost instantly, the dizziness almost vanished entirely.
The task Yang Yi was tackling took an extreme toll on mental energy—only his youth allowed him to carry on in such a way. For someone else, using their brain to the extent he did might not have been sustainable.
As Yang Yi continued sketching with his pencil, Xiao Ran’s phone rang. She took the call and immediately said in a soft voice, "It’s for you."
Yang Yi put down his pencil and took the phone, saying quietly, "Hello."
"Hello, I have a few questions to ask you. Are you able to talk right now?"
"I can talk, go ahead."
"The transaction took place at a military airport in Poland. Do you know which airport it was?"
"I don’t know, but I noted some characteristics of the airport. Also, it’s not too far from the Ukraine border."
"Hmm, and where did the gold come from?"
"The vault of the National Bank of Ukraine."
"Okay, I’ll stick with these two questions for now. If there’s anything more I need to ask, I’ll give you a call. Thank you."
The call ended, and Yang Yi tossed the phone aside to continue his portrait.
Over an hour later, Yang Yi completed the portrait, a full-body image, and added a name underneath.
"Call them, tell them the first sketch is ready."
After speaking, Yang Yi added regretfully, "Actually, I was quite keen to establish some connection with Lloyd. Too bad, no chance."
