Chapter 445: Chapter 433: The Beginning
Big Ivan’s influence in Ukraine was built on the stability of the current regime; as long as the government remained stable, Jethro wouldn’t dare to recklessly attack Big Ivan and his allies. However, if the current regime were entirely overthrown, Jethro could act without any scruples.
But Yang Yi wouldn’t get involved in political affairs, some lines must not be crossed, some things must not be done, and at least, he shouldn’t act as a pawn for an arms dealer while using his status as a mercenary as cover. The profit wasn’t worth the risk, and Yang Yi was not willing to engage in such matters.
"Boss, the shooting wasn’t us..."
While Yang Yi was resolved to be a spectator, a strange voice came from the walkie-talkie Jethro was holding.
Jethro was taken aback, then he said into the walkie-talkie, "What did you say?"
"We haven’t started shooting yet, but someone is firing. I’m not sure who they are. Do you still need us to open fire?"
Jethro drew several breaths like someone with a toothache and then he said to Yang Yi with an undisguised laugh, "It seems someone is as impatient as us, haha."
After chuckling dryly twice, Jethro said into the walkie-talkie, "Open fire! Don’t hesitate, open fire!"
From a distance, Yang Yi could hear the gunfire; it was like throwing a handful of salt into a hot frying pan—the already chaotic crowd started to flee, and the situation suddenly spiraled out of control.
Jethro lifted the binoculars again, apparently observing something. Finally, he put down the binoculars and shouted, "Done, let’s go!"
Jethro turned and strode away; Yang Yi exchanged looks with his colleagues and followed behind Jethro.
On the way home, everything went smoothly, and then it was as if nothing had happened at all.
That evening, Yang Yi saw the news — Ukraine’s Interior Ministry’s Golden Eagle Troops had opened fire on the public, causing multiple casualties.
When Jethro saw the news on TV, he laughed for a long time.
After that, the days were peaceful,
Almost every day, Trident would go out with Jethro, but there were no encounters or assassinations.
It was evident that Jethro’s progress was going smoothly; he was in a good mood all the time.
But Yang Yi was not in a good mood because he had not received any particularly useful intelligence. After all, they were not Jethro’s confidants; when Jethro dealt with business, he tried to avoid them, and Yang Yi didn’t dare to plant any listening devices on Jethro.
Yang Yi had always thought that Trident would stand down from their bodyguard duties once someone Jethro could trust arrived, and he expected this to happen soon, but to his surprise, Jethro kept delaying bringing someone in to secure his safety.
The situation in Ukraine was changing thrice daily, but Yang Yi and his colleagues knew that some things were inevitable.
On February 22, when Yang Yi saw the news of Yanukovych being forced to resign on TV, he understood why Jethro had been in such a good mood for the recent period.
For Jethro, the situation was settled.
On February 22, Jethro broke his routine and had a drink; then, his schedule became even busier, but Yang Yi and his colleagues still made no progress.
Yang Yi’s main goal was to find Deyo Marcel’s whereabouts, but he had never had the chance, since Jethro seemed to be able to decide everything on his own without the need to contact Deyo Marcel.
When the time came to the 24th, Jethro went to meet someone, and then, while Jethro was inviting Yang Yi and the others to sit down for dinner, a small accident occurred.
Jethro rarely got angry.
The reason was that he saw a news report on the TV during dinner, showing the Golden Eagle Troops being forced to kneel and apologize to the crowd at a rally in Lviv.
The previous week, Jethro had arranged for someone to do Arseny a favor, which was to shoot at the civilians and the military police maintaining order, causing a bloody incident and then the Golden Eagle Troops also opened fire, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
Yang Yi didn’t know exactly how many people were killed by the Golden Eagle Troops and how many were killed by Jethro and another group, but Yang Yi knew that the Golden Eagle Troops were definitely saddled with the blame.
Then the Golden Eagle Troops were ordered to kneel and apologize to the people at the rally.
Although he was only watching the television, seeing those kneeling soldiers of the Golden Eagle Troops and the expressions on their faces, Yang Yi knew this matter wasn’t over.
Seeing the men from the Golden Eagle Troops kneel, Jethro was stunned, then he stood up, walked to the front of the TV, and stared intently at the soldiers shown in close-up on the screen.
After that, Jethro got angry, he punched and shattered the TV.
"Bastards! Bastards! This is a declaration of war, this is a declaration of war! Those sons of bitches!"
Jethro screamed hysterically, then he rushed back to the dining table, picked up a chair, and smashed the TV to pieces.
Yang Yi and the others all stood up, no one knowing why Jethro was so furious, not even Boyata.
"Boss, your hand is bleeding..."
Boyata said softly beside Jethro, while Jethro suddenly turned around, glaring with his eyes wide, and said, "Civil war! These idiots, it’s civil war! Civil war is inevitable, civil war is inevitable!"
Jethro shook his hand in pain, and Yang Yi was sure that Jethro’s pained expression wasn’t because of the wound on his hand.
"A situation that could have transitioned peacefully, why incite a civil war? Those sons of bitches, do they really think they’re in control?"
Yang Yi had never seen Jethro lose his composure like this before.
Clearing his throat, Yang Yi chuckled dryly, "Boss, calm down. I think a civil war in Ukraine isn’t necessarily bad news for arms dealers, right? Without war, how can weapons be sold?"
Jethro looked at Yang Yi coldly, then he said in a deep voice, "Does Ukraine need to buy weapons? No, Ukraine has an endless supply of weapons. Ukraine needs to remain stable to serve as my depot, those weapons stored in the armory should be our merchandise, not to be wasted in a civil war. If Ukraine starts a civil war, if the stable supply..."
Taking a long breath, Jethro coldly continued, "Someone is provoking a civil war in Ukraine, yes! Someone must be deliberately inciting a civil war in Ukraine! Russians? Americans? Ukrainians? Who wants to provoke a civil war, and who benefits from a civil war in Ukraine?"
Muttering to himself, Jethro pulled a chair over and sat down, extending his right hand for Boyata to bandage, but Jethro suddenly withdrew his hand, then he stood up again, loudly saying, "The people who opened fire at Independence Square! They fired to incite a civil war, not just to accelerate the process, yes, it was them!"
