Chapter 313: Chapter 312: A Powerful Heart

Yang Yi’s words had given Mike a new perspective on him.

Mike examined Yang Yi from head to toe for a long time before nodding and saying in a low voice, "Similar, very similar."

"Similar to what? Like what?"

"Like your father."

Uncontrollably, Yang Yi touched his own face. Of course, he remembered what his father looked like, but he did not think he bore a strong resemblance to his father.

"You don’t look like your father, but your character is very much like his."

Mike sighed with a sense of sentimentality and said, "Your father was an extremely confident man, and so are you. Both of you have an incomprehensible confidence in the most elusive things in this world."

Yang Yi stood up and then asked Mike in a low voice, "Can you tell me about him?"

Yang Yi was familiar with his father, but he knew that was just another side of his father, one only revealed to his family. As for what his father was like as an intelligence broker, Yang Yi truly had no idea.

"What kind of man was your father?"

Mike frowned in thought for a long time, and finally shook his head saying, "Your father was a very unique person, with a very good reputation, which everyone had to acknowledge. But his most distinguishing characteristic was that, um, he had no enemies."

Yang Yi asked in surprise, "No enemies?"

Mike smiled and said, "Yes, no enemies. He could make friends with anyone. Of course, where there is a conflict of interest, there will inevitably be enemies, but your father had none, for anyone who stood against him ended up dead."

Sighing, Mike said with a look of sentimentality, "Your father often said, ’In the underworld, you must respect loyalty; in business, you must respect credibility.’ That was his code of conduct. You ask me what kind of man he was; I can’t really say. But I know I must repay the favor I owe him. If I don’t, I won’t feel at ease."

Yang Yi said softly, "So, he was a good person, right?"

This time, it was Mike who was taken aback.

Looking at Yang Yi in surprise, Mike suddenly laughed and said, "In our line of work, we never define a person as good or bad. But since you ask, let me tell you. First of all, your father definitely was not a good person."

Yang Yi couldn’t say he was too disappointed; he had simply thought of his father as a good man. But he knew a typical good person could not be an underground intelligence broker.

Mike looked at Yang Yi and smiled, saying, "Why do I say your father wasn’t a good man? Because good people don’t kill the innocent, right? But your father’s favorite thing was to kill the entire family of a person. Let me tell you something; your father had a friend—I won’t say his name because he’s already dead."

After contemplating for a moment, Mike continued, "Your father’s friend was also a partner of his. He died as a result of an enemy’s assassination, an affair unrelated to your father. But your father found the person who killed his friend and vowed to kill his entire family. He produced a list with the names of that guy’s entire family, a large clan, the oldest being 82 and the youngest three, sixteen people in total."

Yang Yi inhaled sharply, saying, "No way."

"Why not? Your father spent two and a half years, employed who knows how many assassins, and spent who knows how much money, and then he truly did kill that guy’s entire family. The last to die was that guy’s daughter, who fled from the United Kingdom to the United States, from the United States to Belgium and finally from Belgium to the Dominican Republic. She was pregnant, but your father still found her."

Yang Yi’s eyes widened in shock, and Mike shrugged, saying, "When your father found the girl, she was four months pregnant. Then your father waited another five months, and after the girl gave birth, the assassin he sent killed the girl on her hospital bed."

Yang Yi’s voice trembled, "No way..."

Mike shrugged again, saying, "He said he would kill the whole family, so he had to do it. But since the child in her womb wasn’t on the death list, he was an innocent. So, your father didn’t mind spending an extra two million four hundred thousand US dollars and waiting an extra five months. He waited for the child to be born before killing its mother."

Swallowing hard, Yang Yi continued as Mike spread his hands, "You see, your father, such a person, no matter what, can’t be considered a good person, right? Even I might have chosen to spare the girl, but your father didn’t see it that way."

Yang Yizhen had no idea what to say, but Mike looked sentimental as he said, "I watched your father burn the death list in front of his friend’s tombstone, then say, ’I have done what I promised you,’ and I knew then that having him as a friend was my fortune."

After a deep breath, Mike looked at Yang Yi and said softly, "Why do I know all this so clearly? Because the person who died, I also knew him. He was just a small intelligence broker, without much power or strength, but your father treated him as a friend. Then, to avenge him, your father spent sixty-four million two hundred fifty thousand US dollars, all the money he had in his account. Additionally, he borrowed two million four hundred thousand US dollars from me because I had helped him find the assassin. Then, he paid me back the two million four hundred thousand US dollars, plus owed me a favor."

Yang Yi nodded slightly, and Mike smiled, saying, "Later, your father repaid me for the favor, and now I owe a favor that I could never repay in this lifetime. Then he said if one day something unfortunate happened to him, to please take care of his wife and son on his behalf, and that would settle his debt with me."

Taking a long breath, Mike said solemnly, "Your father died too suddenly. I didn’t know what happened to you and your mother. But when you called me, I knew then that I had to repay your father’s favor."

Yang Yi asked softly, "Can you tell me what he did for you?"

Mike shook his head and said in a low voice, "I don’t want to say. It’s a secret between your father and me, and I will keep it forever."

Looking somewhat mournful, Mike addressed Yang Yi, "It’s very hard for me to trust anyone now, nor is it likely for me to have any friends. But your father, he was my only friend and the only person I trusted. I’m truly saddened by his death, and seeing you enter this circle, I’m saddened too. But it’s your own choice; I don’t want to stop you. I just want to help you."

Yang Yi said gravely, "Thank you."

"No need to thank me. You owe me nothing. I’m just fulfilling a promise to your father. So if you want to thank someone, thank your father. Also..."

Mike looked at Yang Yi, patted his shoulder, and said in a low voice, "You are not arrogant; you just have a strong heart."
