Chapter 242: Chapter 241 Difficult
Boer extended a finger, his voice grave, "Ten million US dollars, just for one piece of information: who wants to kill me."
Ten million for a single piece of intelligence was indeed a hefty sum, and Yang Yi’s heartbeat accelerated.
Such a big deal, the first task in his life was a high-priced one, what is opportunity if not this major opportunity.
Although Boer hadn’t given the task exclusively to Yang Yi but had assigned the same task to many people, just having the chance to take on Boer’s task was not easy; if the Organization of Water could complete the task before anyone else, it would be a fantastic opportunity to make a name for themselves.
It wasn’t shameful to fail the task, but to complete it would mean a great chance to make a splash; where else could one find such a good deal!
"I’ll take it!"
Yang Yi nodded resolutely.
Boer smiled, "Then, may I know your name?"
Without hesitation, Yang Yi said, "Shui, Organization of Water."
Boer was stunned for a moment, then laughed, shaking his head, "That name... Sorry, I’m not dismissing the name of your organization, but I think using ’water’ as a name is a stroke of genius. Organization of Water, hmm, never heard of it."
Without blushing or skipping a beat, Yang Yi smiled, "We’re very good at keeping a low profile."
Boer extended his hand, and Yang Yi extended his, the two shook hands, sealing the agreement.
After releasing hands, Yang Yi said in a deep voice, "Now that I’ve taken the task, you can tell the specifics, Mr. Stupak. Please try to clarify the details, thank you."
"On June 25th of last year, my associate went to attend an event, driving his own car. On his way home, there was a car accident. His car veered off the highway. The police said he was driving under the influence, but I know he never drove after drinking. He greatly respected his own life."
Sighing, Boer spoke softly, "That event was supposed to be attended by both of us. After learning that he had a car accident, on my way to the hospital, a large truck tried to run me over. If it weren’t for my driver’s timely reaction, I would be dead by now."
Yang Yi asked in a low voice, "Just two car accidents?"
Boer waved his hand, speaking softly, "On October 15th last year, while I was piloting an airplane, I noticed someone had tampered with my fuel gauge."
Yang Yi cleared his throat, "An airplane?"
"Yes, a Cirrus SR22 light aircraft. My mechanic said he had refueled it sufficiently, and the fuel gauge showed full when I checked, but not long after takeoff, I felt uneasy. As a result, I returned to the airport from which I’d taken off, and upon landing, my fuel tank was empty. That means, if I hadn’t returned early, my plane would have crashed."
Yang Yi rubbed his forehead, speaking low, "Where? Where is your airport? Who would have access to your plane?"
"My private airfield, on my Texas ranch; aside from the mechanic, no one could access my plane."
Yang Yi was speechless. He had thought Boer would keep his airplane at a small airport commonly used by private planes in the United States, but he didn’t know that in addition to owning his own light aircraft, Boer also had his own airfield.
Boer shrugged his shoulders, speaking softly, "The mechanic hadn’t tampered with anything, and there were no signs of outsiders. A thorough inspection of the plane later revealed that the fuel gauge had been switched, and a crucial component for control on takeoff and landing had been replaced. If my plane had run out of fuel, I wouldn’t even have had the chance to attempt an emergency landing."
Yang Yi asked softly, "The mechanic..."
"The mechanic is clean."
"How can you be sure there’s no issue with the mechanic?"
"Someone has interrogated him, so I’m confident the mechanic isn’t the problem."
After speaking indifferently, Boer said softly, "From then on, I’ve been extremely, extremely cautious, and I’ve had to give up many of my hobbies. I no longer play cards nor fly. But in February this year, someone tried to approach me. My bodyguard detected his intentions, but when trying to apprehend the man, he committed suicide. A launcher containing lethal poison was found on him, capable of firing a small poison dart, and the assassin had a toxic capsule in his mouth, opting for suicide as soon as he realized he’d been spotted. Oh, that was in Paris."
Yang Yi said in a low voice, "This is different; previous assassinations against you were disguised as accidents, but this time, you could say someone sent a suicide attacker."
Boer nodded, "Exactly, since then I understood that someone is desperate to kill me, but I cannot think of anyone who has the motive to do so."
"Enemies? Competitors? Or perhaps conflicting interests?"
Boer shook his head, "I don’t have personal enemies, I have many competitors, but competition in this field never goes as far as assassination. That crosses a line. To put it correctly, if I had a suspect, I wouldn’t have to pay someone to reveal the truth for me."
Yang Yi looked at Xiao Ran and said with a wry smile, "This doesn’t sound like something a spy could complete, it’s more like a job for the police or a detective."
Boer gestured dismissively, "I don’t care who does it, nor if it’s a spy or detective uncovering the truth for me. What I want is the result, just the outcome."
Yang Yi said gravely, "Do you have more detailed information you can share with me?"
Boer pointed to the person beside him, his voice grave, "Ask him. He’ll tell you everything he knows. Exchange phone numbers, and any progress can be reported to him."
Yang Yi looked at Boer’s bodyguard as the bodyguard gave a slight nod to Yang Yi and said in a deep voice, "Just call me Reddick."
After nodding a greeting to Reddick, Yang Yi said to Boer in a serious tone, "Your commission is difficult, but I’ll do my best."
Boer responded gravely, "I hope so. I now attend almost no public events and seldom leave my home as I’m aware of the danger I’m in. But I’m tired of it, after enduring over a year. I can’t keep staying at home, which is why I’m here, and have also invited my poker friends for a game. Mr. Yang, I will be here for about a week. Should you find the time, you’re welcome to contact me."
Boer nodded, elegantly wiped his mouth with a napkin, and smiled, "I need to rest for a bit. Make yourselves comfortable, don’t forget the time the game starts. See you later."
Boer stood up and left, and after Boer and his protectors had gone, Xiao Ran sighed, "It wasn’t wise of you to take this task."
Yang Yi smiled, "Opening the bid. Ten million US dollars is a big business, and besides, there’s no time constraint, and it’s not a task we took on ourselves."
Xiao Ran pursed his lips, "You’re just thinking about opening the bid. Have you considered that our first deal might end in failure?"
