Chapter 220: Chapter 219: Know or Not Know

What does "change the approach" mean?

Yang Yi didn’t need to guess, as he immediately understood the meaning of changing the approach. Changing the approach meant that if talking and negotiating didn’t work, then forcing a confession was the next step.

The Dark Night Knight and the Grey-cloaked People were nothing compared to this entity, which seemed mysterious yet equally powerful—the cleaner.

If Danny could find a doctor skilled in torture to make someone beg for a quick death, then it would presumably be even simpler for the cleaner to achieve this.

Yang Yi’s sweat stood on end, and involuntarily, his eyes darted towards Xiao Ran.

Xiao Ran seemed to be stunned as well, her voice trembling as she asked, "What does ’change the approach’ mean?"

Patrick said indifferently, "Someone will interrogate him continuously until he reveals everything he knows, and the interrogation will be repeated many times to ensure everything he says is true."

This was Patrick already exerting psychological pressure on Yang Yi, basically informing him of what they were going to do and what Yang Yi was to face, but emphasizing his utter helplessness and the inevitable torture that was coming.

It must be said that this psychological pressure was indeed tremendous.

Xiao Ran exclaimed in horror, "No! You can’t do this. What if he really doesn’t know? It’s very normal for him to not know!"

Patrick glanced at Xiao Ran, then calmly said, "As I said, it’s unfortunate. I am aware that he probably doesn’t know, but none of us can guarantee he doesn’t know anything. Hence, we must confirm that he truly doesn’t know."

After saying this, Patrick shrugged and said, "I’m sorry, Xiao, but you need to leave now. This is no longer a place you can enter. You may go home now."

Xiao Ran instinctively shook her head, but immediately looked at Yang Yi with a face full of despair and whispered, "I’m sorry, I really had no other way to save you then."

Yang Yi shouted, "Wait! Just a minute!"

Patrick looked at Yang Yi and said, "Are you about to confess that you know something? Sorry, it’s too late. I won’t listen to anything you say now. Let the interrogation experts talk to you."

Yang Yi wanted to react, to take down Patrick without hesitation, but he found himself unable to even lift an arm. To strike out? A child could take him down.

Yang Yi truly felt despair, as these people were unreasonable and didn’t play by the rules.

The man becomes the knife, and I the fish on the chopping block; no matter how clever Yang Yi was, at this moment, he was just a sitting duck.

Just then, a knock came at the door. It was only tapped twice before the door opened without waiting for Patrick to speak.

A middle-aged man walked in. The newcomer seemed younger than Patrick, but upon entering, he said, "I’ll take over from here. You all can leave."

Without hesitating, Patrick nodded, then said to Xiao Ran, "Come with me."

At that moment, the newcomer paused in thought, and just as Xiao Ran was about to walk out with Patrick, he said, "Wait, Xiao Ran stays."

Xiao Ran looked at Patrick, and Patrick softly said, "Do as he says."

Patrick had left and closed the door behind him when Xiao Ran softly said, "You are..."

Waving his hand to Xiao Ran, the new middle-aged man smiled at Yang Yi and said, "Sorry, I received the message, but some matters delayed my trip, and I’ve only just arrived. I don’t know how far things have progressed, but if I’m not mistaken, Patrick must have just given you quite a scare, and for that, I apologize on his behalf."

Yang Yi, still unsettled, saw the man as a potential savior and immediately said, "It’s alright, but who are you?"

"Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Elvin, and I have been following your case. When I learned about your incident, I dropped everything and came as fast as I could."

Elvin looked to be in his forties, but his position was clearly higher than Patrick’s, and his words promptly proved it.

"I am Patrick’s superior; there are some matters he doesn’t have the authority to decide on, but I can take full responsibility for all your affairs. Therefore, you can tell me anything, so let’s just cut to the chase. Now, please tell me, do you know for what intelligence your father died? I mean, do you know the entire content of that intelligence, or even just a part of it? Whatever you know, you can tell me."

Yang Yi gave a bitter smile and said, "Please, I was just a child at the time; what could I know?"

Elvin took the seat Patrick had just vacated, but unlike Patrick’s strictly businesslike demeanor, Elvin showed expression.

"As expected, you were just a child at the time."

After saying this with a pained expression, Elvin looked at Yang Yi for a moment, and then suddenly asked, "What are you planning to do? I am aware of your trajectory; you’ve lived in a very stable environment, protected by the Huaxia intelligence service because your father was closely associated with them. But why did you suddenly go to the United Kingdom, and why did you suddenly want to go to prison? Is there a task given to you by the Huaxia intelligence service on you?"

As Yang Yi was about to speak, Elvin seriously said, "I’ll remind you, don’t lie. If you lie, I will have to change the way I speak to you, which is better for you, better for us all. So please, do not lie!"

Yang Yi let out a breath and said, "I am not on any mission. I went to the United Kingdom because I wanted to become a spy, and I want to be a spy to seek revenge on the Grey-cloaked People—that’s it, simple as that. But I don’t know anything; I need to learn. Everything I’ve done in the UK and in US prisons was simply a means to learn how to become a spy."

Elvin said in a deep voice, "How do you know about the Grey-cloaked People?"

"An uncle of mine told me. He was a friend of my father’s, the one who brought me back to Huaxia and watched over me as I grew up. But I knew nothing before, until the day I met Xiao Ran, when I learned what caused my mother’s death."

Elvin tapped his head and said, "Sounds not too complex, but there are some doubts. So, you’re saying you only learned of your parents’ cause of death after meeting Xiao Ran?"

"Yes."

"Then who told you? Tell me his details."

After a moment’s silence, Yang Yi said in a low voice, "I won’t lie because I dare not, but I will never tell you who he is. That’s something I’d rather die than reveal."

Elvin waved his hand, saying, "Actually, I don’t need to know. It’s not important. Let me ask another question, do you want to seek revenge on the Grey-cloaked People?"

"Yes."

"How do you plan to take your revenge?"

"I don’t know. All I know is that if I want revenge, I must know who my enemy is. If I don’t become a spy, then I’ll never get the answer. So, I need to become a spy first to enter the world of the Grey-cloaked People."

Elvin laughed and said, "It sounds unreal, but I believe you’re telling the truth. A fine start, isn’t it?"
