Chapter 195: Chapter 194: Mercenary
Blood spurted out.
The person who wanted to fire the rocket launcher stiffened suddenly. With almost no resistance, he began to collapse weakly.
His hands trembled slightly, his body felt a bit weary, and there was a trace of nervousness. This was Yang Yi’s first time actively killing someone, but that was all the psychological fluctuation he experienced.
Yang Yi, his right hand covering the man’s mouth, swiftly pulled to the side, seizing the rocket launcher from the man’s grasp, with his left hand retracting the knife and slipping the switchblade back into his pocket.
The enemies, they were standing up time after time, firing two shots before quickly ducking behind the cars to continue shooting at Brian and the others.
No one looked towards Yang Yi.
Yang Yi hoisted the rocket launcher onto his shoulder.
Yang Yi had never fired a rocket launcher before, in fact, it was his first time seeing one. However, the rocket launcher was ready to fire, and all it needed was a pull of the trigger—something Yang Yi was certainly capable of.
"Hurry up!"
One of the men firing his rifle finally turned his head towards Yang Yi and then he saw Yang Yi with the rocket launcher.
The enemy looked extremely astonished.
Yang Yi locked eyes with the enemy, but having completed the firing preparations, he immediately pulled the trigger.
With a whoosh, Yang Yi felt his body sway slightly, then the car only about twenty meters away from him exploded with a roar.
The recoil was much smaller than he had imagined, and the power of the explosion from the rocket was also less than he had estimated, also slightly weaker than the previous blast. However, the car was still turned into a wreck, and the two people shooting from behind it fell to the ground.
One of them was actually not dead; he was still writhing.
Yang Yi didn’t know whether he should go over and deliver another shot.
Just then, Yang Yi heard the roaring of a car engine.
In just a few seconds, Brian rammed through the two cars that had become wrecks.
Paul and Charles fired from the car at the pursuers, while Brian drove their off-road vehicle through a road blocked by many cars. The vehicle’s front was badly deformed, and the body was riddled with bullet holes—it was a miracle it could still run.
Brian brought the car to a halt. Yang Yi pulled out his handgun and fired a shot into the head of the man he had slit the throat of, fearing that the man might be resuscitated.
Although the chances of someone surviving with both the carotid artery and throat slashed were slim, concern couldn’t be eliminated by low probabilities. So even if the man was already dead, Yang Yi still needed to fire an additional shot to be at ease.
As he ran towards the car, Yang Yi stopped once more and fired at the person still writhing on the ground.
The bullet struck the man’s shoulder, so Yang Yi fired again.
This time, the bullet hit the man’s ear.
Yang Yi, both angry and anxious, moved toward the still-writhing man, but then Brian fired several shots, blowing apart the head that Yang Yi had failed to hit twice.
Brian continued to shoot, putting a bullet into each enemy on the ground.
Yang Yi finally jumped into the car, Paul exclaimed urgently, "What took you so long!"
Yang Yi sheepishly didn’t know how to respond.
Brian hit the gas, and the car sped away.
Yang Yi placed the rocket launcher, which he was holding in his hand, at his feet. Brian, one hand on the gun and one hand on the wheel, still managed to comment, "Why are you keeping an empty rocket launcher?"
"It has my fingerprints on it..."
Yang Yi felt he might be overly cautious, but Brian nodded and said, "Good job."
The car’s windows were riddled with bullet holes, and Yang Yizhen wondered how Brian and the other two were still alive.
Just then, Paul turned his gun around, and as he aimed it out between Yang Yi and Brian to the front, he said in a deep voice, "Not CIA! Not police! Not FBI!"
Yang Yi said urgently, "I heard their conversation."
Brian said in a deep voice, "Good, what did they say?"
Yang Yi repeated what he had heard and then said anxiously, "I swear I didn’t miss a word."
Brian and Paul exclaimed in unison, "Mercenaries!"
Charles suddenly said, "Maybe not mercenaries, mercenaries wouldn’t have the guts to pull off something this big in the United States."
Paul said with absolute certainty, "But their style is that of mercenaries!"
Charles said, "Why would mercenaries attack us? Also, I didn’t notice anyone surveilling me. There are too many doubts here, oh, I’ve got it!"
Paul asked urgently, "What have you got?"
"The boss was indeed framed. Now I believe it. Someone wants him dead rather than back in prison, so what we’re facing is not the CIA, not the FBI, not the police, but mercenaries or assassins who shouldn’t even be involved."
Brian said in a deep voice, "It’s a bit of a stretch, but it makes sense."
Paul said with great reluctance, "If we could capture one alive, maybe we could find out who hired them. Knowing who’s behind them, we could uncover the mole who’s been hiding all these years. Damn it! Fuck!"
Brian said calmly, "Managing to break out is already good. If we’d been delayed any longer, we would’ve been completely finished. This is Los Angeles."
Their conversation hadn’t affected Brian’s driving at all; he drove so fast that, miraculously, no traffic accidents occurred.
As Yang Yi was wiping fingerprints from a bazooka sleeve, swaying from the jerky movements of the car, he almost cried with relief. These three thick-skinned people had finally remembered to think about how to escape.
"To my safe house, we have a way to escape," Charles suddenly offered.
Then Paul immediately said with great surprise, "You have a safe house? That’s great, where’s the nearest one?"
"Only two, one of which is in Los Angeles, but we have to shake the police first."
Brian said in a deep voice, "Very good. Restock equipment and ammo, take what’s necessary, and get ready to lose the pursuit."
"Helicopter, police helicopter!"
Yang Yi shouted in alarm, not out of fear, but wondering how the hell they could run with a helicopter tracking them from the sky.
Alright, Yang Yi was scared.
Brian showed no sign of panic and said very calmly, "Charles."
"Let me think."
After a brief moment of thought, Charles quickly said, "Turn right ahead, go straight, after two intersections, there’s a large shopping mall with a big indoor parking lot. We can lose the helicopter there."
"Got it."
Brian took a sharp turn, narrowly missing two police cars blaring their sirens.
"Don’t let them catch up."
Brian’s words made Charles hesitate for a second before he aimed his gun at the police cars behind them and said in a deep voice, "No holding back?"
"No, don’t hurt the cops, unless you want every cop in the city coming after us like crazy. They are just doing their job; just stop the pursuit."
Charles didn’t shoot recklessly. He waited for a stable moment to take aim, and his bullets hit the police cars’ engines and tires, quickly bringing them to a stop.
