Chapter 181 - 180: The Generation Gap

Chapter 181: Chapter 180: The Generation Gap

In Tijuana, smuggling had become a complete industrial chain.

Yang Yi and his group had smuggled into Mexico, and naturally, they had to smuggle back into the United States when returning; as for the method of smuggling, it was so simple it was hardly worth mentioning.

Money was all that mattered.

There was no need to risk climbing over two fences monitored by night-vision equipment, nor to trek across the Imperial Mountain Range, and then enter the United States under the patrol of the U.S. Border Patrol.

Paying a little money was enough, $2000 per person.

And a fee of $2000 per person was a high price, considering that the poor in Mexico who wanted to smuggle could not afford such an amount of money.

Those poor Mexicans looking to smuggle had to be crammed into car trunks, hidden in secret compartments of vehicles, or squeezed into containers full of people, risking detection and deportation by border checkpoints, or even the risk of being kidnapped, extorted, or killed by Mexican gangs to enter the United States.

But for Yang Yi and Brian, there was no need to be locked in car trunks as they had been on the way here, nor did they need to squeeze in with others until they were suffocating.

Tijuana and San Diego were separated by only a fence, and if Mexicans could use tunnels to smuggle drugs, of course, they could also use tunnels to transport people, as long as you paid. Since it had already become an industrial chain, it was naturally very simple.

Even though Brian had spent more than twenty years in prison, he still had a good eye. Finding a snakehead to organize the smuggling, stating their conditions, negotiating the price, and then just following the guide was all it took.

On the other side of the wall was the United States, San Diego. When Yang Yi stepped back onto American soil, although it had only been two days, it felt like a lifetime had passed.

"Where are we going?"

Brian said they came to America to find someone, and Yang Yi just followed, but Brian didn’t say where they were supposed to find this person, so Yang Yi had to ask.

"Texas."

"Texas, okay, how do we get to Texas?"

Brian glanced around the street, then said in a deep voice, "First we steal a car, then we switch to another before daylight, and we’ll reach Texas very quickly."

Yang Yi said with some conflict, "Steal a car? Do we need to steal a car? That doesn’t seem right."

Brian looked at Yang Yi, surprised, "Why doesn’t it seem right?"

"The owner of the car will be angry, and you wouldn’t want someone to steal your car either, right?"

Brian became even more astonished, raising his voice, "I didn’t know you were such a good person."

Good person was supposed to be a compliment, but at this moment, Brian said it with an especially ironic tone.

"I wasn’t really a bad person, you know."

"You let a prisoner escape from jail, you killed someone in prison, you robbed drug dealers, and now you’re telling me stealing a car isn’t right?"

"That’s different, I just think stealing other people’s things isn’t nice."

Brian shrugged, "Then it’s your choice, rent a car, or maybe you want to travel to Texas by plane, or you could also buy a car with a big wad of cash."

All the options Brian mentioned came with great risk, required IDs, and it wasn’t possible to rent or buy a car at one in the morning, let alone even think about taking a plane.

"Alright, we’ll steal a car."

Yang Yi quickly gave in; on such matters, he truly had no bottom line.

Brian waved his hand and then briskly walked a few steps before pointing at a sedan parked at the street corner, "That one will do."

Yang Yi looked around and whispered, "Do you know how to steal a car?"

"Of course, for a special agent, not being able to do something like steal a car would be pretty lame."

Brian appeared very confident, but Yang Yi was still skeptical, whispering, "Cars nowadays aren’t the same as before, Hank taught me how to steal a car, but you need tools for that, electronic tools, and Hank disdains stealing cars, so his research on car theft is... oh, fuck!"

Brian walked up to the car, picked up a brick from the side of the road, approached a brand new Chevrolet sedan, then turned his head and smashed it onto the car window.

The car window was smashed by Brian, who was incredibly strong considering how hard it actually is to break car windows.

Beep beep, honk honk, but the car alarm immediately started blaring, and in the quiet of the deep night, the sound was frighteningly loud.

Brian appeared calm and composed, his voice low, "We’ll be gone before the owner comes out, don’t worry."

Brian opened the car door, leaned under the dashboard, and fiddled for a moment before yanking out a box of wires, hurriedly disconnecting all the lines. Yet, the car alarm didn’t stop.

Yang Yi urged anxiously, "Hurry up! Faster!"

Brian was sprawled over the driver’s seat, still messing with the bunch of wires he’d pulled out, but then he suddenly threw everything in his hand aside, quickly got up from the driver’s seat and turned to run away.

Yang Yi was momentarily stunned, but he immediately followed Brian without even calling out.

Brian was running fast. Yang Yi said urgently, "Didn’t you say there was no problem?"

"It’s not quite what I expected. Okay, I admit the development of car anti-theft systems has exceeded my capabilities, I can’t steal it, let’s run before it gets too embarrassing to be caught."

"That’s what I was trying to tell you earlier. Nowadays, cars have electronic anti-theft systems, and there are also engine immobilizers. It’s not like you can just start a car by connecting a couple of wires anymore!"

After running two blocks in one go, Brian finally stopped, then said with a sense of defeat, "We could look for an older car. I’m sure I won’t have any issues this time!"

Yang Yi waved his hand dismissively and then said in a low voice, "Wait, I have a better idea."

Yang Yi took out his phone, to which Brian frowned, "What are you doing? Calling a cab? Are you kidding? We need to get to Texas, not the airport."

"Yes and no, just wait, there aren’t many cars willing to pick up fares at this hour, but there should still be some. As long as I’m willing to pay a bit more, there, we’ve got a ride."

Brian looked bewildered, "You didn’t even make a call, what are you up to?"

"Ride-share service. I’ll get the ride to come here first, then we can just wait here, it’s nearby."

"But you didn’t call to tell them where we are?"

"Uh, you’ll understand soon enough."

After about ten minutes, a white Nissan sedan pulled up in front of Yang Yi and Brian. A middle-aged man rolled down the window and said to them, "Did you guys call for a ride?"

Yang Yi said loudly, "Yes, that’s us."

Yang Yi opened the car door and said to Brian, "Get in."

Brian still looked confused.

Once in the car, the middle-aged driver fiddled with his phone a bit and said, "Taking you to the airport means I can go home and sleep. Alright, let’s get going."

"Wait, listen to me. The next flight to Phoenix isn’t until tomorrow, and we have something very important to tend to—we need to get to Phoenix by tomorrow morning. So, I have a proposition: take us to Phoenix, and I’ll give you a thousand bucks. How does that sound?"

Yang Yi thought going directly to Texas was too far, but they could first get to Phoenix.

The driver turned his head, looking at Yang Yi with a furrowed brow, "Are you serious? For gas and..."

"I’ll cover everything, and if you get tired, we can take turns driving. If you agree, can I pay you now?"

The driver didn’t hesitate, "You guys don’t seem like bad people. Give me the cash, and I’ll take you to Phoenix."

Two well-dressed gentlemen certainly seemed more trustworthy than two disheveled ruffians in tattered clothes. Yang Yi handed over a thousand US dollars smoothly and then said with a smile, "I don’t have that much money in my phone to pay you; if you don’t want cash, a check will do, or a credit card, can you process cards?"

The driver took the cash, checked each hundred-dollar bill for its authenticity, and then said with a laugh, "Cash is good. I like cash. This is great, hey, you guys are lucky for me, today is my lucky day, isn’t it? Let’s hit the road. If you don’t mind, I’d like to listen to some music."

Brian was still looking somewhat dazed at this point.

The driver was talkative. While driving, he excitedly said, "I have four kids to feed, and the worst part is I’m out of a job; otherwise, I wouldn’t be hanging around outside nightclubs at one in the morning. Oh, too many drunkards, it’s not safe, and sometimes they even vomit in my car. Until I find a new job, this is what I have to do. So, what brings you guys to Phoenix?"
