Chapter 170: Chapter 169: Smooth Sailing
We were finally safe in the sky, so even if we had to hover here for a while, Yang Yi was no longer that worried.
Glancing at Rodriguez, who looked wilted but very happy, Yang Yi shouted, "How do you feel?"
"I feel fantastic!"
"I mean your wound."
"I feel good, it’s okay, no problem at all! Hey, this is my first time in a helicopter."
Rodriguez still had the energy to shout at the people around him, so it seemed he was really fine. Yang Yi turned his head back to Raymond and said, "Buddy, thanks for coming in time. Even though I paid for it, I must say thank you. I was really worried before you got here."
Raymond replied irritably, "I always have a good reputation! I was planning to drive to pick you guys up, but the roads were blocked. So I had to pay a high price to hire this sightseeing helicopter to get you. Here’s your stuff, take it."
Raymond picked up a bag from under his feet and tossed it to Yang Yi, who caught it and looked inside to find his clothes, wallet, and IDs. When he checked his wallet, even the change was the same as it had been when he had handed it to Danny.
Yang Yi slapped his passport against his hand, smiling, "Now I am me again! This feels so great!"
Raymond angrily said, "Without me, you would be nobody. Remember, how long have you overstayed in the United States? What is the duration of your visa? Without me managing everything for you all this time, your passport would have been invalid by now!"
Yang Yi flipped through his passport, then looked at Raymond and smiled again, "Thanks!"
Raymond pulled out a big bag and whispered, "You guys start changing clothes now."
Brian and the others took off their prison clothes and began changing right there on the helicopter. Soon, their prison garments were stuffed into the big bag, and after changing into casual clothes, they immediately became less conspicuous.
The helicopter continued to circle above the forest, but before long, the pilot said to Raymond, "The military is requesting airspace clearance, we can leave now."
Raymond waved his hand and said, "Then let’s leave, what are we waiting for?"
Turning to Yang Yi, Raymond said impatiently, "The helicopter will land outside the blockade. There will be a car waiting for you guys once you land. Get in the car, then head straight for Mexico!"
Pointing at Rodriguez, Yang Yi shouted, "His injury is severe, he needs to see a doctor."
Raymond suddenly exploded in rage, "I’m not your damn nanny! There’s medicine in the car, he won’t die! Don’t talk about paying me to find a doctor for you, I don’t ever want to deal with you again."
Yang Yi repeatedly said, "Okay, okay, I know you’re angry, I feel guilty for messing up a long-term deal for you too, but we have to look at the bigger picture. Who knows if we’ll have other big deals in the future."
Raymond still looked displeased, but he didn’t say anything else.
After a good while, the helicopter finally landed, and it seemed to be in a makeshift parking lot where a large van was already parked.
As the helicopter landed, Raymond jumped out while a driver got out of the van. The two of them opened the back doors of the van together, revealing rows of cardboard boxes inside.
The middle row of cardboard boxes was empty, and they were quickly removed, revealing a passageway that led into the interior of the truck.
Raymond gestured with a wave of his hand, saying, "Hurry up and get on."
It wasn’t comfortable to sit in a cargo truck all the way to Mexico, but at this point, one shouldn’t be picky. Who cares about comfort when you’re escaping from prison?
A few people got on the truck one after another, and after the boxes were restacked from the outside, there was no farewell; the truck started moving shortly afterward.
The space left inside the truck wasn’t too small, nor was it particularly stuffy, but only two thin blankets were spread on the floor, making it rough and bumpy whether you were sitting or lying down. But, as the saying goes, during an escape, you can’t be too choosy about these things, and none of the people who had just come out of prison cared about it.
As for Yang Yi and the others, apart from being hungry, there wasn’t much they could do about it, and there were also a few empty bottles thrown in the truck. At first, Yang Yi didn’t understand why the bottles were thrown in, but when he needed to use the bathroom, he realized what they were for.
After swaying for who knows how long, the truck was pitch-dark inside, and at first, there was some desire to talk. After all, the excitement of escaping from prison was still fresh, but not much time passed before everyone fell asleep.
Since the truck hit the road, it had hardly stopped, only occasionally for the driver to refuel, grab a meal, or use the restroom, and never for too long.
Yang Yi slept and woke up several times before the truck stopped again, but this time he didn’t hear any voices outside; it definitely wasn’t a gas station.
Not long after the truck stopped, someone banged on the trailer twice. The banging sound snapped Yang Yi and the others back to full alertness.
Finally, the doors of the trailer were opened, and after two empty cardboard boxes were moved out, a Black driver with an expressionless face said, "We’re here, get out."
After being in the dark for who knows how long and although the sunlight was not directly shining into the trailer, the sudden brightness still made Yang Yi squint his eyes.
"We’ve arrived?"
Yang Yi stood up eagerly then took a few steps forward to look outside before saying, "Where are we?"
The Black driver said loudly, "Borderline. We’re almost at the checkpoint. I’m just responsible for bringing you here. Hurry up, don’t dawdle."
Yang Yi jumped out of the truck, then he noticed there were several other vehicles parked nearby, including sedans, SUVs, and a small cargo truck.
After helping to get Rodriguez, who could barely stand, off the truck with others, a Mexican man came over. Then the Black driver said, "This is them, take them across."
The Mexican man didn’t say much, just gestured with his hand, and then led a few people to the back of a sedan, lifted the trunk lid with a swish, and then gestured to Yang Yi with a blank expression.
Without much to say, crawling into the trunk it was. They had already reached the border, and it wouldn’t be much longer to endure.
The smuggling of people across the U.S.-Mexico border had long become a complete industry chain. Vehicles heading from Mexico to the United States were scrutinized heavily, while those from the United States to Mexico were inspected very leniently. Even if the inspections were tight, it wouldn’t be an issue; after all, it had become a whole industry.
One by one, the people got into the trunk of the car, followed by some jolting, and then all they could hear were the sounds of the engine roaring, car horns, and voices at the border checkpoint. It took a bit longer than Yang Yi expected, but not by much.
When the car finally stopped again, the Mexican man opened the car trunk and said to the curled-up Yang Yi in a muffled voice, "We’ve arrived, get out."
