Chapter 156: Chapter 155: The Surprise Comes Very Fiercely
Yang Yi was struggling to keep up the tough facade; he could only use bluff to intimidate others. But once the bluff was called out, it meant more than just losing face.
Being exposed could be deadly.
Yang Yi pondered for a long time. If possible, he wanted to take Brian, Gweil, and Hank with him, but Rodriguez made him hesitate.
There was no denying that Rodriguez was a good underling. Yang Yi really wanted to bring him along for the escape, but Rodriguez wasn’t much use.
It was a harsh reality, but Yang Yi wasn’t running a charity. Besides, getting Rodriguez out might not actually be better for him than staying in prison. Frankly, Rodriguez could probably survive quite well in jail, whereas following Yang Yi out could get him killed right after the escape.
As Yang Yi was struggling with the decision to include Rodriguez or not, he didn’t dwell on it for too long. He felt it was too presumptuous to think about this when their escape wasn’t even certain.
One benefit of prison life, if it could be called that, was the routine of regular meals: breakfast was followed by lunch, and lunch by dinner.
During dinner, Hank sat down beside Yang Yi and nudged him with his elbow. Then he quickly placed something into Yang Yi’s hand under the table.
It was a cell phone, evident from a single squeeze.
Yang Yi was surprised because the day wasn’t over yet, and Hank had already procured a cell phone. He was incredulous but also pleasantly shocked by the swift acquisition.
"How did you get it?"
Yang Yi whispered the question, and Hank replied softly, "I traded it for a set of keys I’ve had for a few days now."
"Well done. Be careful these next few days. I will get you out of here."
Yang Yi exuded confidence; he sincerely believed in himself, and his confidence uplifted Hank as well.
After quickly finishing dinner, Yang Yi was eager to return to his cell. The warden still hadn’t met with him, and the day’s fight had led to no further consequences. However, this didn’t mean the danger was over. On the contrary, the risk could emerge at any moment, potentially disrupting Yang Yi’s efforts to communicate with the outside world.
So he had to make that call as soon as possible.
He returned to his cell without any trouble and eagerly inserted his SIM card into the cell phone. It was half-charged, which meant he wouldn’t fail to make a call due to a dead battery—a common problem in prison since charging a cell phone was no easy task.
Once everything was in place, it was, of course, Danny whom Yang Yi called first.
Danny answered the call, and Yang Yi blurted out, "Captain, I’m in trouble. I need to get out of here as soon as possible. When you sent me here, did you consider how I was going to leave?"
"What kind of trouble have you gotten into?"
Yang Yi sighed and said, "A lot has happened. To put it simply, that bastard Zhang Yong escaped, and he left the warden in a rough spot before he did. Now the warden’s taking it out on me, making my life difficult. So I need to leave as soon as possible."
"Zhang Yong escaped? When did that happen, and why didn’t he take you with him?"
Yang Yi said urgently, "We’ll talk about Zhang Yong later. Right now, it’s about me. He’s alright, but my life is on the line here!"
Danny said with a grin, "Oh, I see, since I was the one who sent you to Pelican Bay Prison, of course I have ways to get you out, it’s just a matter of spending some money."
The surprises today came hard and fast.
Yang Yi was very excited and asked, "How can I get out?"
"Uh, parole, of course!"
"Parole? Are you joking? I can’t wait that long!"
Danny still grinned as he said, "You won’t have to wait long, once your parole application is submitted, the parole officer will review it, and you’ll be approved within a week, at most a month, and you can leave prison with your head held high."
Yang Yi paused, then whispered, "But I can’t wait a month! The new warden wants me dead!"
Danny spoke with an indifferent tone, "We have professionals to communicate with your warden, it’s all a matter of money, Raymond will handle it well, he earns his money doing this. You’ve served two and a half years already, you’re eligible for parole, so why not? Are you thinking of escaping? If there’s a legitimate reason to leave, why escape?"
Yang Yi was thoroughly shocked, he had thought of countless ways, even considered breaking out of prison, but he never thought about discharge or parole as possibilities.
Danny continued to laugh, "Besides, you can’t escape, remember you went in under someone else’s name. Raymond is the middleman. If you escape, what about the person who paid for you to take their place? The name signed on the warrant is that of the employer, we can’t do that, it would damage Raymond’s reputation."
Yang Yi let out a sigh, then whispered, "Parole, I can actually be paroled... Alright, I overlooked that possibility. But I want to take a few people with me, I was planning to take them with me to escape."
Danny said sternly, "No way! Our plan doesn’t include that. Danny, you can figure out how to break them out after you’re released, but you can’t lead them out directly, we have to maintain credibility, I can’t have Raymond help and then ruin him!"
At any rate, the first step was to get out. Yang Yi pondered for a moment, then said in a low voice, "Alright, I thought it was simpler than it is. Once I’m out, I’ll figure out how to rescue them. But, Captain, you need to get Raymond moving quickly, I can’t keep being targeted by the warden, I can’t fight back in prison, I can’t even ensure my own life."
Danny still sounded relaxed as he said, "As I said, it’s just a money problem, you’ll just spend about a hundred thousand British Pounds and these matters can be easily settled."
Yang Yi let out a breath and asked, "Alright, uh, how much money do I have left?"
"You still have three hundred thousand British Pounds, that’s enough to cover your fees."
Yang Yi was surprised and asked, "How come there’s only three hundred thousand left? Why just three hundred thousand?"
Danny laughed easily, "Handling fees, come on, you didn’t think we were just helping professionally for free, did you? The money you paid had to go through special channels, and since I’m handling it, twenty percent handling fee is already the lowest, alright? Most importantly, you have no one else but me to do these things for you."
For the first time, Yang Yi found Danny’s laughter quite cunning, then he said feebly, "But twenty percent for a handling fee seems a bit too steep..."
"Do you have another choice?"
"No..."
"Then that settles it, why waste words?"
Yang Yi exhaled, saying helplessly, "Alright, although you’re taking a big slice, at least I don’t have to worry about you completely running off with my money. Let’s do it your way. Get Raymond moving fast, I can’t wait here any longer. Also, how’s Kate? Is she okay?"
