Chapter 1388: Chapter 1393: Backdoor Dog
Guarding Big Ivan is definitely an easy job, because there’s nothing much to do, but monitoring Big Ivan is absolutely a tough task because it can get really boring.
Easy and boring, yet carrying responsibility, so being sent to the outskirts of Cape Town to watch over Big Ivan is definitely a good place for exile.
It’s estimated that the task of guarding Big Ivan will eventually fall into the hands of the CIA, as they have the most experience in such matters.
If the CIA is the one watching over Big Ivan, then Yang Yi would be at ease, and why is that? Because he knows how the CIA monitors a high-value target.
Upon arriving at the site and inspecting the local terrain, Yang Yi had a good idea of what to do.
“Big Ivan’s estate lies on flat ground, the CIA would put up a pole, then install a surveillance system, so they could sit in a control room to monitor Big Ivan’s estate. Additionally, the most effective surveillance method is long-endurance UAVs, as long as there are two, it could enable uninterrupted 24-hour aerial reconnaissance. Well, to be safe, there would be at least four drones here.”
Pointing to the sky, Yang Yi said softly, “At heights beyond our naked eye’s capacity to distinguish, there must be a small drone patrolling, anyone entering or leaving would be discovered and recorded. The only inconvenience is that the images are in black and white because the digital signal of black and white images is smaller, thus faster to transfer, enabling real-time monitoring.”
Grevatov frowned and said, “You mean we can’t enter without being detected?”
Yang Yi nodded, “Yes, that’s basically it.”
Grevatov spread his hands, “In that case, it’s a bit troublesome. I didn’t expect the CIA would use drones to monitor continuously.”
Yang Yi shrugged and smiled, “Wait a moment, I have a solution.”
Yang Yi took out a mobile phone.
“A cellphone?”
“No, it’s a mobile intelligence reception terminal… uh, actually it’s just a cellphone disguised as one, but its functions… okay, it’s just a phone.”
Yang Yi fiddled with it for a while, then started trying to enter a password, “The point of these drones is to transmit signals in real-time, right? So this drone needs to transfer signals to the ground, and I’m authorized to receive them. However, once I connect to the drone, it leaves a trace, it’s like a cellphone connecting to WiFi, it receives signals while exposing its position.”
Grevatov said solemnly, “No need to explain the principle.”
“Alright.”
Yang Yi originally wasn’t planning to say more, but he couldn’t help it, so he finally added, “This reception terminal has been modified, don’t forget we have the best hackers.”
“Hackers are hackers, but modifying hardware devices is not really a hacker’s forte.”
“Uh, we have hackers familiar with hardware, so I can receive signals without worrying about exposing myself, wait a moment… okay!”
Yang Yi showed the phone to Grevatov and smiled, “That’s right, there’s a drone above us.”
The drone isn’t large, but it doesn’t need to be, since modern observation and reconnaissance equipment can be made very small yet very powerful.
“And the night vision mode…”
Grevatov felt a bit troubled because on Yang Yi’s phone, Big Ivan’s estate was clearly displayed, along with a large open area surrounding the buildings.
Yang Yi smiled, “Firstly, this drone doesn’t have a thermal imaging mode, or it might have thermal imaging equipment but certainly won’t turn it on. Because the drone’s fuel can support it flying in the air for twelve hours, but the thermal imaging battery can’t last twelve hours. So, if there is thermal imaging on the drone, it will only have three working modes: periodically turning on and off, or automatically activating upon detecting a heat source, and lastly, manual activation by a controller upon detecting anomalies.”
Grevatov said in a deep voice, “Automatic activation is impossible, so the second option and the first are essentially the same, that being thermal imaging automatically turning on and off.”
“Correct, automatically turning on every once in a while, scanning, and focusing on observing upon discovering a heat source. But this is South Africa, the outskirts of Cape Town have many wild animals, also Big Ivan is only under house arrest, it’s surveillance not a target to open fire upon discovering it. So, only one possibility remains, thermal imaging won’t always be used, but will be manually activated by the drone’s controller upon discovering any suspicious targets.”
“Why are you saying all this?”
Yang Yi waved his hand, smiling, “Nothing, just wanted to say it’s easily resolved, um, let’s go.”
Grevatov followed Yang Yi, walking, they needed to walk a long way.
“You can control the drone?”
Yang Yi nodded, “Yeah.”
Grevatov exhaled, “Why didn’t you say earlier?”
“Uh, I was about to, but you interrupted.”
Grevatov raised his hand, “Wait a minute, how can you control this drone? Even if the CIA has many standardized devices, each operation should have independent passwords or other technical means to prevent just anyone from controlling their equipment, right?”
Yang Yi shrugged, “Um, I have high-level clearance, I have backdoors, I can take over control of most equipment, if I want to be discovered, I let it be discovered, if I don’t want to be seen, then no one can find out.”
“Why is that?”
Yang Yi sighed, “Because of someone who really appreciates me. Alright, that’s how I got some clearance that only a Deputy Director of the CIA would typically have, commonly known as a backdoor dog.”
“What does backdoor have to do with a dog?”
“Nothing, it’s just a joke.”
Grevatov suddenly frowned, “Wait a minute, you said the hackers of the Organization of Water modified your receiver? But now, I don’t think that’s the case.”
Of course not, Yang Yi didn’t need anyone to modify anything, Aaron’s legacy to him wasn’t just some advice, just like Yang Yi said, he now has part of the permissions of the CIA Deputy Director, given by Aaron.
“Uh, as long as you understand, there’s no need to say it out loud.”
Yang Yi paused, “Further ahead, we’ll be within the drone’s reconnaissance range.”
Grevatov looked at Yang Yi, “How do you plan to solve it?”
Yang Yi smiled, “Very easily, make the drone lose its control signal, and it will automatically return, by the time they troubleshoot, or simply deploy a second drone, we’ll already be inside.”
Grevatov sighed, “I admit, I originally wanted to see what you were capable of, but I didn’t expect you to be the CIA’s backdoor dog.”
Yang Yi frowned slightly, “Uh, you learn quickly…”
