Chapter 1336: Chapter 1341 Emergency Measures

In the chaos, injuring rather than killing is undoubtedly a more effective tactic.

When the gunfire erupted, Yang Yi could openly flee in all directions—he couldn’t stay and take the bullets, right? But Anton had some issues, as he was being escorted away by at least four people, unless Black Devil could immediately kill the four people around him.

However, Anton could also be killed, which was evidently not something Black Devil wanted to see.

So, after the shooting, Anton did two things.

"Protect me! They’re trying to silence me!"

The first loud shout was enough to confuse the people escorting him for a split second, whether or not it was useful; at least shouting was the right thing to do.

The second move, with his hands bound behind him, Anton leaned his body to the left and then squatted down.

Anton was already stable; there was no need to hold a gun to his head anymore, so Anton now had a chance to escape.

Squatting down, with a nimble move that didn’t fit his slightly plump body, he jumped up, threading his hands from behind over his feet so they were in front, then bumped into someone close to him, knocking them to the ground as his handcuffed hands reached out to seize a pistol that had just been drawn.

The safest way to deal with someone like Anton is to shoot him dead. Otherwise, there is never absolute safety.

Having his hands behind him was cumbersome for running, but once they’re in front, running becomes much smoother.

Anton, with a gun in his hands, sped off in a zigzag away from Yang Yi.

The firepower that Black Devil’s six people could unleash in an instant was stronger than an infantry platoon. This is no exaggeration, because even with just six guns, none of their shots would miss, which made their firepower truly terrifying.

Yang Yi didn’t meet up with Anton, nor did he meet with Black Devil’s people. He simply ran to a safe area, towards a crowded place, ensuring none of those who’d seen him earlier were around, and quickly commenced his escape.

Black Devil would cover Anton’s escape. The bigger their commotion, the safer Yang Yi’s side would be.

But Yang Yi wasn’t alone.

He had been waiting in New York for two days. It wasn’t easy for Yang Yi to leave New York, but others from the Organization of Water could come to New York; it’s a simple matter—just a phone call to arrange.

Yet, although they came, Yang Yi didn’t plan on meeting them, mainly due to the pressure from the Grey-cloaked People and the Cleaners.

The Cleaners are supposed to be allies.

But from the moment Reggie could live yet had to die, Yang Yi no longer fully trusted the Cleaners.

In this world, who can’t be used? Conversely, who is indispensable?

Yang Yi believes his role is critical, perhaps irreplaceable, but what if he’s just a part of the chain of plans?

Can what the Cleaners said in the past still be trusted? Completely trusted? Dared to be completely trusted?

Even within the Organization of Water, can everyone truly be trusted?

Spies are pressured because the pressure can’t be small, right? Xiao Ran is Cleaners’ known contact, Rodriguez is Cleaners’ undercover, Bonnie is Cleaners’ liaison, and while Xiao Ran is trustworthy, Bonnie can be guarded against, Rodriguez has been removed, who else might there be?

Chris? Boer? Even Brian? They all seem unlike Cleaners’ people, but Yang Yi wouldn’t be surprised if any of them claimed to be from Cleaners.

Reggie, who was already dead, didn’t resemble Cleaners, yet he was one. So at the moment of Reggie’s death, whom could Yang Yi still trust?

Once the seed of doubt sprouts, it becomes impossible to eradicate.

Thus, Yang Yi now only trusts himself. Even if he needs help from the Organization of Water, he uses his original power skillfully.

For instance, Yang Yi would never disclose all his plans to everyone. Each person might know a part, a section of his plan, but never the whole picture.

Of course, to clarify, Yang Yi has only become cautious with the Cleaners, not viewing them as enemies. So, all these are precautionary measures, not hostile actions.

Most urgent now is to escape danger, then head to a safe house to change his current appearance completely.

He must change identity because Yang Yi, though not fully exposed, has been partly exposed. He’s made contact with many of those capturing Anton, and if they’re alert enough, someone should be looking for him within three minutes.

Even if those capturers are slow, at latest fifteen minutes, someone should start searching for Yang Yi.

Counterintelligence work is like finding a needle in a haystack, slowly unraveling threads. It’s not about mistakenly killing a thousand rather than letting one go, but rather investigating a thousand people without missing one; this is the basic rule.

To appear and then vanish inexplicably—it’s all right; now Anton is the most wanted, but Yang Yi is at least second or third. If found and investigated without issues, that’s fine, but if not found, it can’t be deserted.

So, now Yang Yi must run, and quickly, skillfully, with very little time left for him.

When a country’s intelligence department is floundering like a headless chicken, with no clues, Yang Yi and Anton can indeed stroll down New York’s streets unharmed. But once even a hint of their trail appears, the situation changes.

When a nation’s intelligence agency is in full pursuit of two individuals, with some distinguishing features and clues, the speed surpasses many expectations.

The nearest safe house requires half an hour by car, but half an hour is too long. It could be interrupted by a helicopter loaded with special forces.

So he can’t make it to the safe house; he must urgently change his disguise and identity midway.

Yang Yi, sitting in a taxi, sent a message, and once he received a reply from the United States, he immediately shouted to the taxi driver, "Stop, stop."

Tossing a bill, Yang Yi quickly exited the car and ran back. After about twenty meters, he paused at another car that had also stopped urgently, then took a small bag from the car window and dashed into a nearby alley without stopping.

Charging into the alley, Yang Yi glanced around to see it was empty, immediately squeezed into a gap between two dumpsters, not caring about filth or stench. He opened the bag, took out the clothes, tossed them to the ground, while taking out a black hood that only exposed his eyes, then put it on.

With the hood on, Yang Yi poured water from a bottle over his head.

Pouring water over his head isn’t for cooling down, but to change his hair color. Wearing a hood while pouring water means he doesn’t want anyone to possibly see his changed appearance, hence the seemingly ridiculous act of wearing a hood while washing his hair.

Though the CIA has Yang Yi’s file, clear photos, currently they must not confirm Yang Yi’s location. Suspicion and confirmation are entirely different matters.

For instance, half the CIA might be chasing a disguised Yang Yi now, but once confirmed he’s here, everyone will be mobilized to apprehend him.

With the hood still on, Yang Yi started changing clothes. He didn’t remove the hood, stuffed the clothes he just changed out into the bag, pulled the pin from a grenade-shaped item in the bag, then stood and sprinted toward the alley’s other end.

Yang Yi ran about ten meters away when a bright flash appeared followed by flames. What he discarded rapidly turned to ashes. Such a method of removing evidence might be too flashy, but after thousands of degrees of heat incineration, no evidence or DNA remains.
