Chapter 132: Chapter 131: Easily Fooled
Yang Yi had his first lunch on the job in the guards’ break room.
Being able to dine with the guards in prison was indeed a rare privilege, and to share a meal with them, chatting so merrily that they were reluctant to leave for home by the end of their shift—this was Yang Yi’s special talent.
The amiable and friendly guards, the leisurely work, tasks completed beyond expectations—all seemed perfect, except for one thing.
It was that Yang Yi realized his tolerance for slop had decreased.
After nearly two years in prison, Yang Yi had finally grown accustomed to—the term should not be "accustomed," rather "habituated to"—the prison food; but after eating with the guards, his long-dormant sense of taste had returned.
Although the guards thought their food was nothing to write home about—a large sandwich, a steaming hot vegetable soup, some freshly fried French fries for snacking, and a cola—this simple staff meal was nothing lavish. However, the point was, Yang Yi hadn’t tasted these things in two years.
So, come dinner time, Yang Yi found he had no appetite.
Having skipped his daily workout, he needed to make up for it in the evening. The prisoners’ grub couldn’t hold a candle to that of the guards, so Yang Yi had to force down whatever his subordinates had scraped together for him out of necessity, however unpalatable—taste was secondary, calories were key.
While Yang Yi was eating, Zhang Yong sat down beside him with his tray.
Zhang Yong’s face was stone-cold. Yang Yi waved his hand at his group of underlings and said, "You guys go eat somewhere else; we have some matters to discuss."
All the underlings left, leaving no one around Yang Yi and Zhang Yong.
Zhang Yong said icily, "You didn’t show up for the yard time today."
Yang Yi spread his hands, smiling, "Yeah, I’ve taken up a job. Know where? The special ward. And today the guards told me that the Beast lives in that cell. Plus, he gets yard time too, but only once a week."
Zhang Yong frowned with a dark expression. Yang Yi lowered his voice and said, "Do you want to take down the Beast? If you do, I can help."
Zhang Yong’s expression lightened up somewhat, and he said, with a barely-there smile, "Oh, you’re willing to help? Isn’t that why you got in here, to take down the Beast?"
Yang Yi immediately shook his head, "That’s what I’d like to do, but you didn’t want to, right? It’s your call, but, like I said, if you want the Beast dead, I’m definitely in."
"No need, I don’t want him dead, I’ve already told you that, so it’s best if you don’t stir up trouble."
Yang Yi looked around, then whispered, "I’m here for the ’Spy,’ like I told you. Do you know who it is?"
"Who?"
"I don’t know yet, not at the moment."
Zhang Yong said somewhat irritably, "You’ve learned to play coy now."
Lowering his voice, Yang Yi said again quietly, "I’ll soon be meeting with that old spy. You think I’m in the special ward to kill the Beast? Sure, I won’t deny that thought crossed my mind, but that’s up to you. My primary goal is to see that old spy. He’s going to teach me everything I need to know, everything."
Zhang Yong wasn’t quite convinced by Yang Yi’s words; he stared at Yang Yi for a long time.
"What, you don’t believe me?"
Zhang Yong nodded and said, "Yes, very few people can deceive me, but you ... I think you’re acting very well now. I can’t see anything on your face. You’ve learned well from that acting professor, but my intuition tells me you’re lying."
Yang Yi helplessly said, "When have I ever lied to you?"
"Just because you haven’t lied before doesn’t mean you won’t lie to me in the future. Whatever has happened in the past doesn’t guarantee it will continue in the future. So why can’t you lie to me?"
Yang Yi waved his hand helplessly and said, "You think too highly of yourself. To tell you the truth, Brother Yong, we have a good relationship, don’t we? I’m also quite grateful to you, so I really want to help you, but you don’t want my help. Do you think it’s possible for me to get involved now just to kill a beast?"
Zhang Yong began to ponder because, to a normal person, Yang Yi’s behavior indeed seemed reasonable.
"I’ve told you, I went in there for that spy. Do you know who he is? Hmm, he’s a legendary spy from the CIA, a double agent, and he’s been locked up in the cell for a very long time. He’s bored to death and willing to talk to anyone. I think he’d also be happy to teach me something, so that’s why I mixed in. It wasn’t that hard."
After speaking with apparent indifference, Yang Yi said seriously, "So I’m asking you if you really want to kill the beast, Brother Yong. Just say the word, and I feel ready to go all out."
Zhang Yong stared at Yang Yi for a long time and finally sighed and said, "Alright, I don’t need your help. It’s fine."
Yang Yi said urgently, "Think about it again. Beast Wayne isn’t having as hard a time in there as you think, so I think you should take him out!"
Zhang Yong gestured dismissively and said, "Stop it. Take care of your own business, and don’t worry about others."
Yang Yi sighed helplessly and spread his hands, "Alright then, what you say goes with your business."
Zhang Yong seemed much more relaxed and said with a smile, "How long will you work?"
"I don’t know. I plan to see and talk to that spy first before making a decision. If he teaches me, I’ll keep working. If he doesn’t, then there won’t be any point in working. Brother Yong, aren’t you going to reconsider? Giving up your entire life for a grudge isn’t worth it!"
Zhang Yong stood up, smiled, and said, "Whether it’s worth it is my business, and I think it is. Well, I won’t have dinner with you; you’re too much trouble. I’m off."
Zhang Yong walked away with his tray, and Yang Yi watched his retreating figure for a while before continuing to eat his meal.
The way a normal person would logically think doesn’t necessarily apply to Yang Yi, because he is not a normal person.
Zhang Yong is a person who values friendship and loyalty; he probably wouldn’t kill Yang Yi just for being a nuisance. So, the plan was to present a fait accompli and then let Zhang Yong do whatever he wanted, whether it was scolding or hitting. Anyway, Yang Yi was definitely going to kill the beast named Ryan.
He had thought it would be hard to fool Zhang Yong, but it turned out to be that simple.
Yang Yi signaled his underlings to come back, then he began contemplating something. Just to deceive Zhang Yong, he had claimed he entered the special ward for an old spy, but after saying that, Yang Yi suddenly felt that actually doing it might indeed be feasible.
The guards in the special ward were all so bored; what would the prisoners be like? No matter whether it was a spy or a murderer, as long as he felt bored, there was a chance. Thinking of this, Yang Yi decided it was time to find an opportunity to talk to that old spy.
