Chapter 1313: Chapter 1318: All In
The Shield was pushed in, entering through the back door of the great hall.
Both sides used a lot of grenades, but then a few loud explosions were heard inside the hall, sounds that grenades couldn’t possibly make.
Anton felt his heart skip a beat. Satan had been forced to use their bombs. If they couldn’t repel this attack, then it was all over.
Although it felt like a pity, Anton could accept it. No matter how powerful someone was, as long as they fought, they would eventually die on the battlefield.
The Shield was in, and the squad following it was in, the outcome was decided.
Anton didn’t show much difficulty in accepting this, but he knew that Satan was probably done for.
The gunfire suddenly stopped, and those who had just entered through the back door unexpectedly began to retreat. Anton widened his eyes in utter shock, watching the scene unfold before him.
It had been so difficult to get in, so why were they retreating now?
The Shield was the last to withdraw, and the Viper looked like he was about to vomit blood, but the battle was over, and Satan’s people didn’t pursue.
"What’s going on!"
Viper shouted furiously, and one of the two who was pushing the Shield turned his head and said, "Boss, they took the chief as a hostage!"
After such a huge sacrifice and the deaths of so many people, we finally breached the great hall, only to retreat just like this.
The only reason being Satan had taken Baghdadi as a hostage to shield them, but there’s a problem. If the Iron Madonna was merely hired by Baghdadi, then given the intensity of the battle reaching this point, even if Baghdadi was important, the Iron Madonna wouldn’t back off like this.
Anton understood now. He had initially only speculated, but now he could confirm that Baghdadi was with the Iron Madonna, no doubt about it. Baghdadi was definitely one of the Iron Madonna’s people, and quite possibly the leader.
Anton thought it was absurd, but there were already countless absurdities in this world, one more wouldn’t matter.
Anton said nothing; he turned and left, unwilling to stay any longer to avoid provoking any murderous thoughts in the Iron Madonna.
If Baghdadi’s life didn’t matter, the Iron Madonna’s attack was close to succeeding, but if they didn’t want Baghdadi to die, then this attack was meaningless.
Viper was silent for a long, very long time.
Finally, Viper waved his hand and said in a low voice, "Cease the attack!"
Anton saw Viper again during a post-battle meeting.
Everyone was speaking, everyone voicing their opinions. There were still many supporters of Baghdadi, it had to be said. Now everyone could see it: Baghdadi couldn’t be saved alive, yet no one was willing to give up.
Of course, those willing to abandon Baghdadi were already dead.
Viper finally raised his head. Looking at the chaotic crowd in the room, he started with a few words. When he saw they had no effect, he suddenly raised his voice and shouted, "Quiet!"
The room quieted down, Viper stood up, and said in a deep voice, "We have to face a reality, that is, Baghdadi will not come back."
Everyone’s faces were ugly, and just when Anton also thought Viper was about to give up, Viper calmly said, "But I’m not prepared to give up."
"So many have died, our best warriors are almost used up..."
Someone gathered up the courage to speak, and seeing that no one refuted him, and instead were all looking at him, he continued, "If Baghdadi is ultimately going to die, then what’s the point of our persistence and sacrifice?"
This was the harsh reality, but Viper said softly, "The enemy has a lot of wounded, they can’t hold out much longer. If we put in a little more effort, we might succeed. Although the hope is small, as long as we persist, there’s always some hope. If we give up now, Baghdadi will truly be finished."
After saying this, Viper paused, then said in a deep voice, "I’ve made my decision, we will continue to attempt to rescue Baghdadi, and even if the last member dies fighting, we must rescue Baghdadi because he is our reason for existence."
"No, you have more important missions, more..."
Viper raised a hand, stopping anyone from advising him against courting death, then continued, "Go surround the great hall with explosives. If our final rescue attempt fails, detonate the explosives and bury the enemy with our corpses together."
Succeed or die trying.
The strange thing is, does the Iron Madonna truly have such a firm stance?
The Iron Madonna is also a mercenary group, as mercenaries, they shouldn’t have such a firm stance. If every mercenary could disregard life and death, then what would be the point of making money, or why would they become mercenaries?
An army with beliefs is terrifying, and if mercenaries hold beliefs, are they still mercenaries?
It’s really unclear how Baghdadi managed it. Clearly, even though Viper is now commanding the Iron Madonna, Baghdadi is the key to making the mercenaries of the Iron Madonna willing to die for him, this must be understood.
Anton also didn’t know if this was a blessing or a curse for Satan.
The fortunate part is that holding Baghdadi is like having a talisman, but the unfortunate part is if the Iron Madonna is exhausted, there would be no one willing to tie their hands and feet and fight to rescue Baghdadi.
Viper has said to pile up the explosives, and if they can’t break in, they’ll bury Satan and Baghdadi together with their bodies.
This kind of order should have been opposed, but no one spoke up, everyone tacitly agreed to Viper’s plan.
Viper wearily waved a hand, then said softly, "Go prepare, prepare the explosives!"
The previously chaotic crowd dispersed in silence, leaving only Viper in the room.
Anton sat down, looked at Viper for a long time, finally saying softly, "Is it worth it?"
Viper looked at Anton, calmly saying, "What have you seen?"
Anton spread his hands, and said in a deep voice, "Of course I’ve seen it. I’m not blind; I just want to ask if it’s worth it, given that there’s really not much hope."
Viper sighed and said, "If Baghdadi dies, all our previous efforts would be wasted. I think we can’t bear to start all over again, and there’s no opportunity left. So we either fight to the death, or... we might as well simply die."
Anton nodded, softly saying, "Good luck. What you need now is just luck."
Viper smiled a little, then quickly became resolute, and said in a low voice, "Luck will be on our side, because long-established facts have shown that no matter how big the difficulties we encounter, we can ultimately solve them!"
