Chapter 1294: Chapter 1299: Do Not Provide Support

Be friendly, but show strength, let Salib know that if he acts rashly, he’ll be killed. This is very important.

Salib was a bit stunned when his gun was taken and then returned. He instinctively grabbed the gun back, then stared at Brian for a few moments before turning on the safety of the rifle and slinging it over his shoulder.

"Alawi, go see what we have to eat."

Alawi turned and left. Salib gestured to Brian and said gravely, "Rest a while, you’ll have food soon."

The setup on the first floor was simple, almost rudimentary. Salib led Yang Yi and the other two into a smaller room with a carpet on the floor, and a low table in the middle.

The room had a faint stench of foot odor. As Yang Yi took off his shoes, the smell intensified, making him a bit embarrassed.

Salib was only wearing slippers, his face calm, seemingly oblivious to the smell. He casually walked to the low table, sat down, and placed his rifle to the side.

Brian sat next to Salib and smiled, "Is business good?"

"It’s alright."

After saying it was alright, Salib glanced at Yang Yi and Reggie, then whispered, "I rarely do business with Westerners, they’re unreliable."

Brian smiled, "Not everyone is unreliable, in fact, you should know the reputation of Baghdadians, buddy. None of us have much credibility, so we have to guard against each other. It’s normal."

Salib fell silent, while Brian, after slouching for a bit, simply lay back and surprisingly began to snore on the carpet.

Yang Yi and Reggie looked at each other, puzzled. Salib, however, seemed more relaxed and suddenly said to Yang Yi, "New here, huh?"

"Huh? Uh, yes."

"First time in Baghdad?"

"Uh-huh, yes."

Salib chuckled, then whispered to Yang Yi, "You need to learn how to survive here. Your companion looks well-adjusted, but you two are not."

It’s certain that Brian and Salib have a way to verify each other. However, Yang Yi didn’t know how they discerned each other.

After about ten minutes, Alawi brought in a big basin of cooked meat. The meat was definitely pre-cooked, as ten minutes would be insufficient to prepare such a large portion of meat.

After setting down the meat, Alawi returned with a tray carrying many flatbreads, some hummus, and a large bottle of cola, and nothing else.

The aroma of the stew mixed strangely with the somewhat strong foot odor, not pleasant but not offensive either.

Brian woke up, looked at the items on the table, and said with interest, "Not bad, quite a feast."

Salib chuckled, picked up a piece of bread, smeared some hummus on it with a spoon, placed some meat on it, folded it, and started eating.

Reggie reached for a flatbread, but seeing Yang Yi and Brian not moving and gazing at him oddly, he sheepishly put the bread back and wiped his hands on his clothes.

Salib chuckled and began to eat the meat-filled bread heartily.

Salib quickly finished, poured himself a glass of cola, drank it, and then gestured to invite them.

Brian grabbed a flatbread, tossed it to Reggie, but didn’t eat it the same way as Salib. Instead, he dipped the flatbread directly into the stew.

Yang Yi took a bite of the flatbread and found it too hard, as it had been made earlier and was both dry and tough.

Without a word, Brian devoured the food, and indeed, Yang Yi and the others were hungry, and astonishingly, they finished off about five or six portions of food.

Once they were full, Yang Yi and the others finally ended their meal.

Seeing them done, Salib called Alawi back in to clean up the table, then lay down in the back corner of the room to sleep.

Yang Yi didn’t understand the rules, but he could definitely grasp Salib’s intentions.

Eating first signaled that the food wasn’t poisoned, and lying on the carpet to sleep meant acting as a hostage.

Making money isn’t that easy.

"Salib, we don’t need to do this."

Brian finally spoke, saying calmly, "You ate with us, but there’s no need to sleep together. Can you give us three clean rooms?"

Salib sprang up and said joyfully, "I can’t promise they’re clean, but I can give each of you a room."

Brian smiled, "That’s fine."

Salib happily led Yang Yi and the others upstairs. The three rooms had a much better smell, and each had a small bed. Although there was nothing else besides the small bed, it was enough for Yang Yi and the others.

"You can charge your devices, meals will be brought up, if you need anything, ask Alawi, nothing else, goodnight."

Salib left with a few words, and Brian looked around before pointing to the room furthest out, saying to Reggie, "You sleep here, I’ll take the middle."

He nodded at Yang Yi, indicating he could make a call, and entered his room, leaving the door open.

Yang Yi closed the door, then called Aaron again.

"The safe zone is no longer safe, everyone else is dead, now it’s just the three of us left."

Yang Yi didn’t completely tell the truth. He paused, then said in a very subdued tone, "Sir, I’m not questioning you, but I don’t plan to tell you my location this time, though I think you should know it by now."

Aaron took a deep breath, then said softly, "I don’t know your location because I’m not monitoring you. Besides, you shouldn’t doubt me because if I wanted to eliminate you, there are plenty of opportunities."

"I said I don’t suspect you, nor do I distrust you. I just no longer trust the Grey-cloaked People. When there’s even an issue with the safe house, sir, who do you think I can still trust?"

After saying this in a rather dissatisfied tone, Yang Yi took a breath and then said softly, "I’ll find a way to return, bringing the things you wanted. If there’s nothing else, I’d like to hang up the phone. Oh, and sir, you said you’re not monitoring me, right?"

"Yes."

"Good, then if I encounter any more suspicious people, I’ll just take them out directly."

Aaron paused for a moment, then said very firmly, "Bring the items to me as soon as possible, I won’t arrange for anyone else to meet you."
