Chapter 1292: Chapter 1297 Businessman

Actually, Yang Yi hadn’t planned to take Reggie’s call, so when he saw Reggie pulling out his phone, he first stopped walking and then gave Reggie a strange look for a moment.

Reggie felt uneasy under the gaze, and Yang Yi finally spoke.

"It’s not that I don’t trust you by not letting you contact the outside world; if I had even a slight mistrust of you, you’d already be dead."

Yang Yi patted Reggie’s shoulder helplessly, saying with a deep expression, "People like us, what are we most afraid of? Not the strength of our enemies, but being betrayed by our own. If I really thought you were unreliable, even if it was just a little suspicion during such an important mission, I would still kill you. And once we returned, even if you were innocent, it would just be a sacrifice for the country, and I wouldn’t face any punishment."

Reggie whispered, "Isn’t that wrong...?"

"Between the mission and you, what do you think I would choose?"

Yang Yi smiled, and Brian whispered beside him, "This isn’t the time for a lesson. You’ll have plenty of time to let a newbie know what the harsh reality is, but right now, we’d better hurry up."

Yang Yi patted Reggie’s shoulder again, saying, "Keep moving, put the phone away. Unless it’s an absolute emergency, don’t call or contact anyone."

Reggie sped up his pace a bit, staying beside Yang Yi, whispering, "Then, what qualifies as an absolute emergency?"

"If I’m dead. As long as I’m alive, you can’t call anyone."

On the streets of Baghdad, the three of them weren’t very conspicuous because they had just come from Mosul. They were covered in robes, with bulletproof vests underneath, and aside from a backpack, they didn’t look much different from the locals.

The attire was the most basic disguise, yet also the most important. If one wore clothing that was obviously different from the locals, it wouldn’t even have to be something bizarre to stand out like a firefly at night.

"Where are we going?"

In such a place, in such a situation, it was best to ask Brian. Without hesitation, Brian said, "I’m looking."

Baghdad had electricity at night, but the supply was not very stable. Streetlights were sporadic, only in small areas, and after dark, the streets were almost deserted. So, shortly after leaving the Green Zone, the streets turned pitch black.

Yang Yi didn’t have night vision equipment, but Brian did. Brian’s night vision device was a small monocular, and while its observational capacity wasn’t great, it was better than nothing.

They had already walked quite a distance when Yang Yi couldn’t help but whisper, "What kind of place are we looking for?"

"First, the house has to be inhabited, and secondly, the owner must be willing to take us in."

"Take us in?"

Brian looked back, then whispered to Yang Yi, "If you just need to stay for one night, you could break into any house and find a way to stay overnight. But if you don’t know how long you’ll need to stay, it’s best to find an appropriate house."

Yang Yi still didn’t know what constituted an appropriate house because he was unfamiliar with Baghdad and the Middle East. This unfamiliarity wasn’t just geographical but extended to the customs and culture.

Finally, Brian seemed to have chosen a spot.

He stopped, waved Yang Yi over, and in a barely audible voice said, "Let’s try here. I don’t know what’s inside; there could be danger. If the people inside start shooting, then there’s no negotiation. You’re quicker on your feet than I am, so try to handle the people inside without alerting the neighbors."

When Brian mentioned Yang Yi’s quicker movements, it was evident he felt a sense of unwillingness and melancholy.

There’s no helping it; age does catch up. Brian was indeed formidable, but Yang Yi was younger.

The saying that youthful strength is daunting was not said lightly.

And because of Brian’s words, Yang Yi understood that the house they were about to enter was no ordinary one. Why? Because despite Brian being slightly older, he was not someone easily dealt with. If a place necessitated Brian asking someone else for help, it would certainly be fraught with danger.

Yang Yi didn’t draw his gun but instead drew his knife.

Brian had said to let Yang Yi handle it without alerting the neighbors, so it was naturally better not to use guns. If firearms were an option, Brian wouldn’t have asked Yang Yi to act.

Brian went to the door, extended his hand, but quickly withdrew it, then gestured for Yang Yi to open the door.

Reggie was a bit nervous; he took out his gun and aimed it at the door.

Although Brian held a gun, upon seeing Reggie’s action, he gestured emphatically for Reggie to put the gun down.

Reggie sheepishly lowered his gun, while Yang Yi approached the door. He cautiously turned the handle, observed the lock, then shook his head at Brian, indicating a kicking motion.

It wasn’t that Yang Yi couldn’t open it, but the door was clearly barred from inside with something like a bolt. Such simple locking methods couldn’t be tackled without force.

Brian exhaled, thought for a moment, then shook his head at Yang Yi, holstered his gun, and signaled Yang Yi to sheath his knife before proceeding to knock on the door.

Yang Yi was a bit dumbfounded by this turn of events.

The knocking sound carried far in the silence of the night. Brian patiently kept knocking, and after ten or so knocks, someone finally spoke from upstairs.

The house they had chosen was a two-story building, and if someone was speaking upstairs, it meant they were on the roof.

"Who is it? What do you want?"

Still at the door, Brian replied quietly, "Businessmen, buying things or selling you things."

"I don’t understand what you’re saying; leave immediately."

Brian continued quietly, "It’s obvious we mean no harm, buddy. Big deal!"

"Come back at dawn!"

"At dawn, it won’t be with you. Some deals have to be made at night, or rather, only at night do they become big deals."

The person on the roof thought for a moment, then said softly, "Don’t move, wait."

Just two minutes later, there were sounds from inside the door. First, a small window opened on the door; no person could be seen, but a voice spoke urgently from within: "What do you want?"

"Let me show you my capital."

After saying this, Brian opened his backpack, pulled out a stack of US Dollars, and continued in a low voice, "I have a lot of money here. I’m here to do business. If you want to do business, open the door."
