Chapter 1289: Chapter 1294: Retreat to Advance
Yang Yi was using retreat as a strategy to advance, revealing the fact that the Grey-cloaked People he had sent were either dead or wounded, while he and the members of the Organization of Water remained unscathed.
You cannot suspect me of being an insider just because my men are formidable and we suffered no casualties; that’s the point Yang Yi wanted to express.
Aaron was somewhat annoyed, he whispered: "Listen, no one is accusing you, and no one suspects you’re a mole!"
Yang Yi retorted unwaveringly: "Then how do you explain the fact that the first thing everyone does after meeting me is to demand I hand over the item?"
Aaron was speechless, Yang Yi continued: "Listen, Commander, I don’t mean to explain anything, truly. I have no doubt that the janitors would go to any lengths to get this item, so whoever possesses it is in great danger. I’m fortunate to have handed it over to someone named Dawson, whose head was blown off, while I am still alive. Had the item been on me, I’d be the one dead."
"This item is indeed very important, and the janitors will undoubtedly go to any lengths to seize it."
"Any lengths?"
"At all costs, truly at all costs."
Yang Yi was slightly puzzled because he felt that if the janitors wished to seize the item at all costs, then why send it out proactively?
But such doubts could not be resolved.
Yang Yi continued: "Now, I am very willing to hand the item to any operative sent to assist me, as long as someone comes."
Aaron’s voice was grave: "Do not shirk responsibility; I’ll be very disappointed if you do."
Yang Yi sighed, then whispered: "I suspect an insider because the janitors’ ambushes were too frequent and precise. If I’m to continue escorting the item, I demand a complete change of all informed individuals to ensure absolute confidentiality for my future itinerary."
Aaron pondered for a moment, then whispered: "Your concerns are valid, but currently, you are in a location where our forces are weak; in the Middle East, the janitors indeed operate better, with greater strength, which forces us to dispatch personnel from other regions to support you."
"Then what?"
"Absolute confidentiality is impossible, but... I can consider using the CIA’s resources."
Yang Yi replied softly: "I have no objections."
"Now, you need to go to a safe place; you can’t go directly to the airport. You can go to the safe house and await my instructions."
Yang Yi whispered: "Just now, I and a guy named Rock both think the safe house is no longer safe."
Rock opened his mouth as if to say he didn’t say that, but after hesitating, he didn’t speak.
"What?"
Aaron was somewhat surprised, then confidently said: "No, trust me, the safe house is very safe!"
Yang Yi shrugged, then whispered: "Alright, I trust your judgment, Boss. I’ll go to the safe house and wait for your notification."
"Be careful."
After saying this, Aaron quickly added in a grave tone: "From now on, you keep the item yourself. Regardless of who comes to meet you, do not hand it over to anyone. If anyone asks for the item, kill them!"
"Understood, thank you."
"I still trust you very much; stay in touch."
Yang Yi hung up the phone, then said to Rock: "Let’s go to the safe house."
Rock whispered: "I didn’t say the safe house isn’t safe, though I am skeptical."
After complaining a bit, Rock looked around and then said into the walkie-talkie: "We need someone to lead us home."
Yang Yi whispered beside him: "Why, don’t you know the location of the safe house?"
"I do."
"Then why need someone to guide us? Given the current situation, I think it’s safer for us to quietly go by ourselves."
Rock whispered: "Hmm, no one will come to meet us."
It must be some kind of code, Yang Yi cautiously looked around and said: "There will soon be a lot of people here, mate. Is the safe house far? Where is it? I think you better tell me because nobody knows what might happen next."
Rock thought for a moment and told Yang Yi the location of the safe house.
Sure enough, the safe house was close, only a twenty-minute walk away.
Previously, the janitors didn’t know the location of the safe house, but now they do.
After pondering briefly, Yang Yi called Reggie over in front of Rock.
Reggie approached Yang Yi and softly asked: "Is there anything?"
Yang Yi spoke calmly: "Listen, we have to make some precautionary measures. If the safe house is still safe, we won’t have any issues, but if it’s compromised, we might be attacked, so take off your backpack."
Reggie was a bit stunned, but he quickly removed his backpack.
Yang Yi openly placed the cross in Reggie’s bag, then patted Reggie’s shoulder and whispered: "Compared to us, you’re a non-entity; you’re the most overlooked one. We’ll go into the safe house first and confirm there’s no problem, then you go in. If we encounter an attack, you run!"
Reggie was a bit nervous, swallowed and whispered: "Where can I run?"
"It doesn’t matter, it’s okay. No matter where you hide, someone will soon find you. After being found, if you’re alive, you’ve completed the task. If you’re dead... nothing more needs to be said."
Reggie said miserably: "Boss, I think it’s better if you keep it. I can go to the safe house and check it out first."
"You can’t test anything out, only I can!"
Yang Yi smiled and patted Reggie’s shoulder, then he said to Rock: "Alright, let’s hurry."
Rock sighed, then shook his head and said: "What a hell of a mission this is!"
Reggie also whispered: "Yeah, what a hell of a mission this is."
Yang Yi could only smile because he knew for sure that going to the safe house meant an inevitable ambush. The reason was simple: after he said those things just now, the janitors could hear him, and after hearing, they’d definitely lay an ambush at the safe house.
Honestly, the word ’transparency’ does not belong in the world of spies.
After nearly thirty minutes of hurried walking—though not perilous, indeed it required considerable effort—Yang Yi and his team finally arrived at the Grey-cloaked People’s safe house within Baghdad’s Green Zone.
A convenient store that sells everything, open 24 hours.
Rock looked behind, then whispered: "Let’s go inside; I’ll go first."
Yang Yi whispered: "I’ll go in with you; there shouldn’t be any problem, let’s hope it’s fine."
