Chapter 1278: Chapter 1283 Airstrike
There’s an order from above that cannot be ignored. Aaron said to leave immediately, so we must leave immediately.
Yang Yi stood up and said gravely, "We’re leaving here. Tell Azar we have an urgent matter and need to go."
Brian whispered, "But..."
Yang Yi gestured lightly and said softly, "Let Anton stay; he knows how to handle it. But the most crucial thing is, I think we can’t leave."
Brian hesitated for a moment, then said sternly, "Paul, Black Jack, go and make preparations for departure. We’re very likely to encounter an assault, so..."
Before Brian could finish, Yang Yi said quietly, "Survival is the priority; nothing else matters. Also, you don’t need to protect me."
Brian looked at Yang Yi and then understood what he meant, so he quickly said, "Listen to him."
Paul and Black Jack went out. Yang Yi stood up, handed the bag containing the cross to Brian, and then went outside. He first found Anton and said, "We need to leave. You stay and continue the mission."
The reason Anton was left behind was that he could easily keep in touch with Tartar, and as long as one person remained insisting on meeting Baghdadi, then Baghdadi should still show up.
Anton didn’t hesitate much; he nodded and said, "Be careful."
Yang Yi then found Azar, knocked on Azar’s room door, and said quietly, "Buddy, something has happened. I must leave immediately."
Azar was extremely surprised and said, "You’re leaving? Now?"
"Yes, right now. But my deputy will stay; this mission must continue. There’s not much difference whether I’m here or not."
Azar shrugged and said, "Alright."
Yang Yi thought for a moment and said, "Hmm, there’s one more thing. I think I need an escort."
Azar was surprised again and said quietly, "An escort? Oh, of course, there will be one. It’s necessary. I’ll contact them to arrange an escort. If you leave alone, it will be very inconvenient."
Yang Yi shook his head and said softly, "No, I mean an armed escort."
Azar was even more surprised and looked at Yang Yi in shock, to which Yang Yi made a slight explanation and said quietly, "I think Victor will come after me. He wants to attack me."
"What kind of joke is this!"
After Azar said this, he lowered his voice and said, "What kind of identity does he have to attack you here, unless he doesn’t want to live anymore. Hmm, I could make this clear to the ISIS people right now, have them immediately capture that Victor, or at least monitor him."
Yang Yi exhaled softly and said, "Hmm, but I still have to leave immediately. Can an armed escort be arranged quickly? Furthermore, I think some disguise is needed."
Azar seemed a bit troubled and said softly, "In that case, it shouldn’t be much of a problem. I’ll contact them right away."
"The sooner, the better, buddy."
After saying goodbye to Azar, Yang Yi waited in his room for about half an hour before Azar returned.
"They’re willing to provide personnel to escort you out, all the way to the border, but do you really think having more people will make it safer?"
Yang Yi said softly, "If I had a few more of my people, I wouldn’t choose to have ISIS send an escort. But I have too few people; if any danger arises, having few people will make it very difficult to handle."
Azar glanced at his watch and said, "Alright, we can leave in half an hour. Hmm, do you have any other requests?"
"No other requests, thank you."
Azar sighed lightly and said, "I still think Victor wouldn’t dare to attack you here. Although I don’t know what you’re fighting over, I feel that as long as Victor isn’t crazy, he won’t attack you here. Hmm, for easier communication, I’d better accompany you."
The fact that Azar would personally accompany him was quite surprising to Yang Yi. He nodded and said, "I’m very grateful."
Azar left, saying it would be half an hour, but Yang Yi knew it couldn’t be so quick. Sure enough, when Azar indicated they could leave, it was already an hour and a half later.
ISIS dispatched about a hundred people and more than twenty vehicles. This escort team was quite large in scale. But honestly speaking, the more people there are, the more dangerous it is because there could be an airstrike.
Azar still had significant influence here with ISIS because he represented their client. As long as the requests weren’t excessive, ISIS had to oblige.
They could leave. Yang Yi got into their own vehicle, positioned towards the back of the convoy. Brian led a separate team in another vehicle close by, but there was one car in between them.
The convoy began to move. Everything was calm within Mosul city, but once outside the city, Yang Yi suddenly said through the radio, "Stop, I need to switch vehicles."
Yang Yi’s behavior could be described as paranoid, but even if Azar had complaints, he wouldn’t show them. He responded over the radio, "Switch vehicles?"
"Yes, switch vehicles. I want a pickup truck. Don’t talk about it on the public channel, just let two vehicles stop for the exchange."
It wasn’t a strange request. After a moment of silence from Azar’s side, Yang Yi’s vehicle pulled over. It took a very short time to switch to a pickup truck equipped with a heavy machine gun.
It was unclear if the cleaners would launch an attack because it seemed no armed force could attack ISIS here unless it was an internal member of ISIS launching an attack on Yang Yi.
But the cleaners should not have the capability to control ISIS, at least not significantly. Therefore, Yang Yi himself didn’t know whether he’d encounter an attack.
After switching vehicles, catching up with the convoy, and continuing to drive for less than thirty kilometers, the vehicle at the front of the convoy suddenly turned into a fireball.
The attack came so unexpectedly, Yang Yi couldn’t see where it came from, only that dust suddenly rose from the ground ahead, followed by successive explosions.
"Airstrike! Airstrike! Scatter, scatter!"
Someone shouted loudly over the convoy’s public channel. Two rockets hit the roadside, and Reggie, who was driving for Yang Yi, seemed momentarily dumbfounded, then suddenly yelled, "Airstrike! We’re under an airstrike!"
Yang Yi had been quite calm, but now he wasn’t. Because he felt that even if the cleaners didn’t intend to kill him, a pilot launching an attack from the sky couldn’t precisely identify targets. In other words, the plane dropping bombs could still hit him, which would be quite normal.
