Chapter 1217: Chapter 1222: Know Everything
Just like a dying man in the desert who hasn’t just found a spring but stumbled upon a luxurious rescue team—food, water, and a rescue helicopter with air conditioning ready to take him home.
This was exactly how Yang Yi felt right now.
That feeling of salvation.
In the depths of despair, amidst unbearable agony, the sudden feeling of being rescued.
Even though he hadn’t forgotten what his mission was, at that moment Yang Yi truly felt a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for Aaron.
Yang Yi was dazed for a long while until Aaron patted him on the shoulder.
It wasn’t particularly painful, but it did sting a bit. Yang Yi snapped out of his daze but continued staring intently at Aaron.
Yang Yi didn’t ask how Xiao Ran could be saved because if Aaron was willing to talk, he wouldn’t need prompting. The fact that Aaron hadn’t mentioned it indicated he was deliberately withholding the method to save Xiao Ran, leaving Yang Yi hanging.
Under these circumstances, asking would be useless. At the end of the day, it boiled down to the fact that Yang Yi’s rank wasn’t high enough, or rather, he still needed to earn the Grey-cloaked People’s approval.
The information he had absorbed in such a short time overwhelming him left Yang Yi’s mind in a haze.
The true identities of his parents, their reasons for death revealed just slightly, the feud between the Cleaners and the Grey-cloaked People, and, of course, Xiao Ran.
Yang Yi’s mind was truly in chaos; he needed time to digest everything he had learned today.
Aaron patted Yang Yi lightly again and smiled, "What are you thinking about?"
Yang Yi looked up at Aaron and then said in a low voice, "What do I have to do, and to what extent?"
Aaron spread his hands and smiled, "Good question. Unfortunately, the answer is: I don’t know, because that’s a decision for headquarters. If headquarters thinks you’re not ready for the answer, then I can’t tell you, because what I know is limited to this."
Looking at his watch, Aaron raised his voice, "Everything you’ve heard today is highly confidential. Don’t leak it."
Yang Yi, of course, understood the consequences of leaking secrets. The Grey-cloaked People even locked up their own members in prison to prevent leaks. Aaron being this forthright with him was nothing short of a miracle.
Yang Yi nodded and said, "Of course, I know what to do."
"You can go rest now. I’ll send everything you need to you. See you later."
Bonnie pushed Yang Yi out of the operating room, while Aaron remained behind. He stared at Elvin’s corpse, lost in thought.
Every word spoken here could be monitored, so strictly speaking, nothing should have been said, but Yang Yi was filled with doubts and desperately needed someone to talk to.
Yang Yi had Bonnie take him to the intensive care unit where Xiao Ran was. He stood up and watched silently through the glass window for a long time.
Xiao Ran’s issues weren’t just the paralysis—her condition was inherently perilous. She needed to survive first before the paralysis could even become a concern.
Xiao Ran lay in deep sleep. Yang Yi watched her for a long time, then decided not to tell her anything for now.
Because Yang Yi wasn’t confident. If there was hope but in the end it couldn’t be realized, wasn’t it better not to tell Xiao Ran at all?
At the very least, he should wait until there was a bit more certainty before revealing anything. Right now, Xiao Ran’s condition was too critical to handle emotional distress. Giving her unrealizable hope would only make things worse. Everything could wait until Xiao Ran was out of danger.
Yang Yi still wanted to check on Anton, but Aaron appeared sooner than expected.
Aaron carried a briefcase with him, lifting it slightly towards Yang Yi as he smiled, "Come to your room."
"Here’s your phone—a satellite phone, a mobile phone. Looks like you’ll need a new number from now on. Oh, this one’s important: some of the codes the Grey-cloaked People use internally for communication. Memorize them, and destroy it after. If you press this button here, it self-destructs. Very convenient."
After placing a USB-like device in front of Yang Yi, Aaron said solemnly, "Memorize it quickly, then destroy it. You know what this means."
Yang Yi asked, puzzled, "It’s the 21st century. Why are we still using codes for identity verification?"
"The simpler, the more reliable. Traditional methods don’t equate to outdated ones."
Aaron handed the satellite phone to Yang Yi, speaking gravely, "This phone is also very important. Don’t lose it. If you face danger, make sure to destroy it."
Yang Yi didn’t know whether the Cleaner’s phone or the Grey-cloaked People’s phone offered better confidentiality. He took the phone and frowned, "Am I being monitored during all my calls?"
Aaron smiled, "What do you think?"
"Obviously. It makes me feel like I’m being surveilled. Being watched by my own people is still surveillance, isn’t it?"
"We’ve got no choice. To prevent eavesdropping, you have to remain in a constantly monitored state. For the sake of safety, we’re forced to choose a less pleasant but safer approach."
Yang Yi picked up the mobile phone—it was the latest model but looked just like a regular phone. Aaron smiled, "There are two of these. The other one is for Bonnie. Oh, and if you don’t have to make a highly classified call, you can use other phones. We don’t impose strict requirements that you must always use a monitored phone to contact the outside world. So, you can call your people now."
"All right. Anything else?"
"That’s about it. Oh, you can also requisition CIA equipment without restrictions, but that goes without saying. If you’d like to upgrade your Organization of Water gear, just submit a report to me once you return. Consider it a small perk for you."
Now Yang Yi and Aaron could truly be considered part of the same group. And naturally, being part of the same group meant preferential treatment.
"Alright, thank you. When can I leave?"
"Anytime. Go wherever you want. But I suggest you recover here first. At least wait until your face heals, okay? Well, do you have anything else to say to me? If not, I should get going."
Yang Yi contemplated for a while, then addressed Aaron seriously, "Yes."
"Speak."
"Brian."
Yang Yi mentioned a name, then took a deep breath and said, "Brian is one of my men. Do you know that? Regardless of whether you do, I feel I should tell you honestly."
Aaron smiled, looking pleased. He calmly replied, "I obviously know."
Yang Yi inhaled sharply and said, "Then the Magic Box Squadron has already been reorganized under Brian. Do you know about this as well?"
"Of course I know. If I didn’t, wouldn’t I be utterly incompetent? Over the years, the Magic Box Squadron hasn’t been under strict surveillance, but after Brian broke out of Pelican Bay Prison, I started keeping tabs on the Magic Box Squadron. So yes, I definitely know they’re under your command now."
