Chapter 116 - 115: The Beast

Chapter 116: Chapter 115: The Beast

For half a year now, whenever Yang Yi was out walking, the inmates would watch him with wary eyes, or a group would simply pick up their legs and walk away.

Yang Yi felt he was about to provoke public anger.

Now, there were already twelve underlings following behind Yang Yi.

Yang Yi led them around aimlessly, looking for someone to bully to practice his skills, but he didn’t want to mess with the bigger gangs yet, and the smaller ones would simply hide when they saw him.

Unless he saw someone alone and attacked, it was really hard for Yang Yi to find a suitable practice target.

After Owen took the money, he did get things done properly; no matter how much trouble Yang Yi caused, the guards never took him away for a little "education," at most they’d capture two of his underlings for a slight punishment after he injured someone, but they wouldn’t go too far.

So now, everyone in the prison knew Yang Yi had some sort of secret deal with the guards; he could hit others with no repercussions, but the other way around was not acceptable.

So, of course, the inmates would avoid him.

After wandering around, Yang Yi helplessly found Zhang Yong and sat down in front of him, then waved his hand, signaling his underlings to leave.

"No fight?"

"Can’t find the right person. I’ve beaten up every small gang at least once, some even twice. I think it’s pointless to keep practicing this way, isn’t it?"

Zhang Yong nodded and said, "Yeah, it is pointless. You need to fight a master now, I mean, a real master."

Yang Yi sat opposite Zhang Yong and asked, "Are there any masters in this prison?"

Zhang Yong thought for a moment, nodded, and said, "There are. There are definitely masters here, black, white, South American, it depends on how you measure it. But they’re all in gangs. As for those who are really masters, I know of two, but you haven’t seen them because they are in solitary cells and they’re never allowed to go out, can’t walk around here."

Yang Yi got excited and asked, "Where are they then?"

Zhang Yong looked at Yang Yi and said, "Have you been here for nearly a year and don’t know that Pelican Bay Prison holds some of the most dangerous inmates in the United States?"

Yang Yi was taken aback, then pointed at the groups of inmates and said, "Aren’t they right here?"

Zhang Yong smiled and said with a look of disagreement, "Not having to wear shackles, how dangerous can they be? They’re just gang members, not born killers. Let me tell you, the really tough guys, you can’t see them. They’re in a different block, in solitary cells, handcuffed and shackled all the time, only allowed outside one day a week, and other times, even eating is done in their own cells, it’s almost like solitary confinement, no, it’s even worse than solitary."

Yang Yi became more excited and whispered, "Who’s in there, do you know?"

Zhang Yong sighed, leaned back in the chair, looked up at the sky, and said, "I know just one, Beast Wayne. He’s right here in this prison. If you meet him, you’ll understand why he’s called the beast."

Yang Yi whispered, "Is he that tough?"

"Let him out, everyone here would be his prey. He’s the only one I’m not sure I could defeat in this prison, a beast. If it wasn’t for him being locked up here, I wouldn’t have chosen prison as a place to find some peace,"

"You know him, right?"

Zhang Yong just smiled and said, "Yes, I know him."

"From the look of you, I knew it! You came to prison just for him!"

Yang Yi said it with certainty. Zhang Yong smiled and nodded, "Yes, I came to prison to kill him. But I didn’t know that he was locked up in solitary confinement, a privilege only the worst of the worst enjoy. After I found out where he was, I thought maybe keeping him locked up was better than killing him."

Yang Yi asked in a low voice, "Why? I mean, what’s between you two that would make you want to kill him?"

Zhang Yong twisted his neck a little, then smiled and said, "It’s a story about betrayal."

"Could you tell it?"

Zhang Yong’s expression suddenly turned a bit pained. He unknowingly gripped his hand on the back of the chair before speaking in a lower voice, "I’m not a loner, nor have I always operated solo. I had brothers, but they’re all dead. So, yes, it’s a tragic tale of betrayal. A tragedy for me."

After speaking calmly, Zhang Yong laughed and said, "There are some things better left unasked. I never pry into your secrets, and you’d better not pry into other people’s secrets either."

Zhang Yong picked up the deck of cards next to him and said with a smile, "Come on, call your boys over to play cards. You deal, but no playing."

Yang Yi didn’t call over his boys; he just looked at Zhang Yong, hesitated, and said, "I understand now. You’re not here for a quiet life; you... you came to kill that beast Wayne!"

Zhang Yong helplessly said, "Didn’t I tell you? I don’t want him to die now. I just want him to suffer in a tiny cell with shackles on. That’s more painful than death, so it’s not about wanting to kill him."

Yang Yi shook his head and whispered, "I get your point. But you’re not hiding out for peace. You’re here to keep an eye on the beast; you’re guarding Wayne to ensure he stays in that solitary cell. Even having him locked up here, in a part of the prison that is hell for ordinary people, seems like leniency to the beast. So you don’t kill him, but you won’t leave either. You just want to be here, close to him, watching over him!"

Zhang Yong sighed and looked helplessly at Yang Yi, "There’s a saying that it’s better to leave some things unsaid. Do you understand that? I’ve got nothing better to do here, and you’ve come to learn. So why not just focus on what you’re here to do? What good is knowing too much?"

Yang Yi said earnestly, "Brother Yong, I know you think keeping Wayne locked up is a better punishment, but is it necessary to sacrifice your freedom to punish him? You should kill him, then get out."

Zhang Yong’s face darkened, then he said in a low voice, "This is my business, it’s not your concern. Let’s drop it and play cards."

Yang Yi said urgently, "Brother Yong, it’s not worth it. Are you going to stand guard over Wayne for a lifetime if he is locked up forever? It’s not worth it. You should kill him and make a clean break!"

Zhang Yong exhaled and said, "You don’t understand, you just don’t get it. To me, there’s not much difference between living and dying; anywhere is hell. What I need to do is to make sure Wayne has it worse than me, to ensure he suffers more. That’s what matters most to me."

After saying this, Zhang Yong sighed, then smiled, "Come on, let’s play cards."
