Chapter 1066: Chapter 1071 Why

Yang Yi lay in the hospital bed, while Petra was feeding him porridge.

Petra might have been influenced by some movie because Yang Yi’s injuries were not so severe that he could only eat porridge. Moreover, his right arm was fine, and he didn’t really need Petra to feed him.

But Petra insisted on feeding Yang Yi, and how could he have the heart to refuse her?

Even though Petra had never fed anyone else before, and was somewhat clumsy and clearly not skilled, Yang Yi still enjoyed it very much.

He looked affectionately at Petra, sipping the preserved egg and pork congee without knowing from which Chinese restaurant she had bought it, and actually, the feeling was quite nice.

The door to the hospital room was knocked. Yang Yi turned his head slightly and said in a low voice, "Come in."

Reggie entered, standing by Yang Yi’s bedside and whispered, "Boss..."

Petra, accustomed to such situations, set the porridge aside and smiled, "I’m going to the restroom. You two talk."

"No need!"

Yang Yi reached out and grabbed Petra’s hand, and holding her hand, he looked at Reggie and said, "There are no secrets in front of her, go ahead."

Reggie pulled a sheet of paper out of his briefcase and whispered, "The lab report is out."

"No need to show me, just tell me."

While handing the report to Yang Yi, Reggie whispered, "Your salad was poisoned, with a high purity of botulinum toxin, laboratory-grade."

Yang Yi paused for a moment, then shook his head and said, "No need to show it to me. Just tell me if only my salad was poisoned, or if both of our salads were poisoned."

Reggie glanced at Petra, then seeing the look in Yang Yi’s eyes, and without any prior communication, he said solemnly, "Both."

Yang Yi took a deep breath, looked at Petra, and then through gritted teeth said, "That damn bastard!"

Yang Yi was extremely angry, extraordinarily so, even though he knew that the salad Petra ate was not poisoned at all.

Yes, the killer only wanted to eliminate Yang Yi, and anyone around Yang Yi, no matter how important to him, was not the target of the killer. Even if it was convenient to kill them, the killer would not make a move, but Yang Yi didn’t want Petra to know this.

Grasping Petra’s hand a little tighter, Yang Yi said softly, "Dear, I think we may need to be apart for a while..."

Suddenly, Petra said, "Let me see it."

Petra suddenly reached out and snatched the chart from Reggie’s hand. After looking at it twice, she said, "Who gave you this lab report? The hospital? Or the police?"

Reggie was stunned for a moment, then said, "Uh, the police."

Petra furrowed her brows, pondered for a moment and said, "That’s right, this is the molecular formula for botulinum toxin. But why would the killer want to poison me? Dear, the salads we ordered were different."

Yang Yi wanted to say that even a casual poisoning would not stand, and also that Petra’s salad was served first. That is, if Petra had started eating her salad first, she could have died right in front of Yang Yi, leading to the assassination attempt failing.

Yang Yi frowned and said, "Because it was a different server who took the order, perhaps the killer didn’t know."

Petra shook her head and said, "No, he knew because he didn’t ask who ordered the vegetable salad and directly placed it in front of me. And then, he put the ham salad in front of you."

Yang Yi’s eyes just looked somewhat puzzled and said, "Yeah, why is that?"

"Also, when the killer brushed past me, he clearly had the chance to kill me, but he did not."

Yang Yi said in a deep voice, "Because he didn’t dare; he was worried I had a gun, or that I could catch and kill him."

Petra shook her head and said, "Although I don’t understand all this, I don’t think that’s the case. The assassin didn’t even look at me—not that he didn’t see me, but he saw me and completely ignored me. What does that tell us? I’m not his target. Even if he could have killed me with the stretch of a hand while standing before me, he wouldn’t have."

Why is Petra either intelligent or difficult to deal with?

Why did Anton end up with dumb women, while he encounters smart ones?

Yang Yi just wants to say it’s unfair. Why are all the women who are involved with him—Kate, Xiao Ran, Petra, Bonnie—so shrewd?

Even Tang Guo is a genius hacker?

The worst is Annastasia, who’s so astute she doesn’t even leave Brian a way out.

Why is it that not a single woman he encounters is easy to handle?

Why?

Why?

Why!

Sorrow and anger intermingled in his heart, but his face showed only confusion.

Apart from assuming a thoughtful pose, what else could Yang Yi do now?

Petra reached out her hand and returned the lab report to Reggie.

Now Yang Yi and Reggie were just relieved that this lab report was genuine.

Petra spread her hands and said with an easy smile, "So there’s no need for us to separate. I feel that I am not in any danger, my dear. I know you’re worried about me, but there’s really no need for us to part ways."

Petra’s clingy nature was completely on display. Were it any other woman, even during the throes of a passionate romance, they’d probably steer well clear in such a situation.

What is going on in Petra’s brain?

Yang Yi sighed softly, grasped Petra’s hand again, and said in a low voice, "This time it’s poisoning, what about next time? What if a bunch of people start shooting at me? My dear, I don’t want anything to happen to you, I absolutely can’t let anything happen to you. Even if I die, I can’t let you get hurt. So we have to part ways for now, or else... I might die."

Petra placed her finger on Yang Yi’s lips, then said tenderly, "You said you were going back to Europe. Yes, this isn’t your home ground; the situation is indeed somewhat dangerous. But once in Europe, I don’t think anyone will shoot at you recklessly, right? Also, my being by your side doesn’t mean you will die. Dear, the two things are totally unrelated. Don’t try to mix them up."

Yang Yi felt he was being foolish.

Petra sighed, laying her head against Yang Yi’s chest, and said in a low voice, "I know you’re worried about me, so you’re trying to scare me into maintaining some distance from you. It would indeed be safer, but... I can’t bear to leave you."

Yang Yi gave Reggie a look of desperation, hoping he would say something to help, but Reggie was not Anton; he couldn’t break the siege.

"So there was actually no poison in my salad, right..."

Listening to Petra’s sighs, Yang Yi felt a pang of shame—the embarrassment of having his lie exposed.

Yang Yi exhaled and said, "Reggie, could you step out for a moment? Um, lock the door behind you, thanks."

Reggie turned and left, locking the door of the ward behind him.

After waiting for Reggie to leave, Yang Yi said softly, "My dear, I can’t bear to leave you either. I really can’t, but think about it. I can choose to arrange for a lot of people to protect me and focus on dealing with my enemies, returning only after it’s completely safe. The other choice is to stay with you, but most of my attention would be on you. In your presence, I see no one else, nothing else. Which do you think is safer, and which choice will yield a better outcome?"
