Chapter 106: Chapter 105: The New Prison Overlord
In American prisons, there’s a unique food chain where gang members occupy the highest tier, especially in Pelican Bay Prison, where this situation is more pronounced as over sixty percent of the inmates are gang members.
Even if one is not a gang member, after entering prison, joining a gang becomes necessary to survive. Thus, many criminals become affiliated with gangs only after being incarcerated, resulting in about eighty percent of Pelican Bay’s inmates being gang members.
Still, a small portion of people, despite their difficult existence, are unwilling to join any gangs.
The reason is simple: it’s easy to join a gang but hard to leave. Once part of a gang in prison, you’re part of it even after release, and it’s very easy to be used as cannon fodder.
Every gang in prison makes its presence known, otherwise how could they band together or recruit people? Those inmates who still have a chance of release or hope for parole obviously do not wish to join gangs.
As for Yang Yi, he didn’t belong to any gangs, at least none of the infamous major ones. He was a prisoner who could fight, and under his wing, others found protection. After their release, everyone would go their separate ways without interfering with each other; thus, Yang Yi was well-liked by many prisoners. This phenomenon was quite common, with around twenty percent of prisoners surviving by forming such alliances.
Yang Yi sat down at the dining table and began to enjoy his dinner. Before long, a black man with a tray in hand hurried over to him.
"Hello."
After respectfully greeting Yang Yi, the black man pulled out two packs of cigarettes and placed them beside Yang Yi, then whispered, "I’d like to follow you."
Yang Yi looked up and asked deliberately, "What’s the charge?"
"Second-degree murder, a twenty-year sentence. I’ve been serving for three years now, boss."
Yang Yi picked up the cigarettes, put them in his pocket, and said gravely, "Sit next to me. What’s your name?"
The black man appeared extremely pleased, promptly sitting down and cheerfully saying, "My name is Scollin, boss."
Yang Yi looked up to see one of his subordinates, Colin, standing by the queue, occasionally speaking to the people who passed him, and then his plate would have an extra serving of food added.
How nice, how simple, how satisfying.
It was from deep contentment that Yang Yi felt satisfied, and just then another white man approached his table.
A middle-aged white man who looked to be in his forties, appearing meek and as though he was accustomed to being bullied, hastily took out two packs of cigarettes and quietly asked, "May I follow you?"
Yang Yi’s eyelids lifted slightly as he inquired, "What’s the crime?"
"Um, theft."
Looking at the cringing white man, Scollin could not contain himself; he immediately addressed Yang Yi, "Boss, this guy’s lying. He’s in for rape and murder, with a life sentence!"
Yang Yi’s face darkened with anger as he exclaimed, "You damn scumbag! How dare you deceive me?"
Scollin immediately stood up. Yang Yi had no intention of getting up. He simply said firmly, "Teach this son of a bitch a lesson!"
Scollin threw a punch, then kicked the rapist-murderer, who had hoped for protection, to the ground. He followed up with a relentless barrage of kicks.
Just then, another Latino ran over to join Scollin in kicking the man.
Seeing enough had been done, Yang Yi shouted, "Enough, stop."
The beaten white man lay on the ground crying, but he could not garner any sympathy. A piece of shit guilty of rape and murder deserved to be bullied to death anywhere he went.
Yang Yi tossed the two packs of cigarettes on the table at the white man with a look of disgust and commanded, "Get lost! Don’t let me see you again, or I’ll beat you every time I do!"
The prisoner picked up the cigarettes, unable to continue eating, and shivered as he slowly got to his feet.
Scollin kicked him again and shouted, "Our boss told you to get lost!"
The strong-armed inmate crawled away crying, while Scollin and the Hispanic inmate placed their hands on their heads, lay down on the ground, and then turned to the guards, waiting to be taken away.
But the guard just glanced at them sideways and didn’t make any move, which delighted Scollin. He scrambled up from the ground and said to Yang Yi excitedly, "Boss, even the screws are giving you face!"
Yang Yi smiled and asked, "What’s your situation?"
The Hispanic inmate who had helped Scollin beat up the man smiled broadly, put two packs of cigarettes on the table, and said in heavily accented English, "I want to follow you, boss. I’m in for armed robbery and assault, sentenced to twelve years. I’m new here and I’m very sensible."
Yang Yi nodded and inquired, "What’s your name, and where are you from?"
"Rodriguez, from Ecuador, twenty-five years old, boss. I really want to follow you. I heard as soon as I got here that you’re the tough guy around here, boss. I hope I can be with you."
Yang Yi nodded and said, "Sit down and make yourself useful."
Rodriguez immediately took a seat. Now, Yang Yi had three underlings, and at that moment, Ben came over with a tray and said, "Boss, there’s no more room on the tray."
Ben put his own tray in front of Yang Yi, who nodded, and then started eating until he was very full, leaving more than half of the food on the tray untouched.
Yang Yi waved his hand, and the three underlings quickly divided up the remaining food, transferring it to their own plates.
Ben, being the first to enlist, deserved some perks, even though he was only a minute or two ahead of the others. There should still be some order to things.
"Ben, from now on, you’ll collect the food for me."
Ben replied gratefully, "Thank you, boss."
Working for Yang Yi still required thanking him.
Yang Yi smiled and asked, "Do I need to tell you the rules?"
Ben immediately responded, "We all know the rules, boss!"
Yang Yi said with satisfaction, "Very good. No one will be able to bully you from now on, only we’ll bully others. Got it?"
"Got it."
"Thank you, boss."
Having underlings was always good, and the more the better. Yang Yi didn’t need his underlings to fight for him; he preferred to do it himself every time. However, that didn’t mean they could just do nothing; spoiling them too much was not acceptable either.
Now, Yang Yi hadn’t figured out what tasks he would assign to his new recruits. For the time being, he’d have them run errands.
Just then, two more white men approached Yang Yi and together they said, "Boss, can we talk?"
Yang Yi exhaled leisurely and said, "Tell me what crimes you’ve committed. You first."
