Chapter 1043: Chapter 1048: Top Student
"Why do you have to say it like that, why so bluntly, Yang Yi understands this all too well.
With Petra’s background, she has always complied with her father’s arrangements, which shows that she actually lacks a rebellious spirit, or in other words, she’s a very obedient and well-behaved daughter.
Then this means that Petra is submissive to authority, and paternal authority is certainly a form of authority.
This also proves that even if Petra doesn’t worship the strong, she at least tends to like men who are much stronger than her, a subconscious mindset ingrained in her from a young age, unchangeable.
Fairy tales are deceptive; a prince would not fall for Cinderella, nor would a princess easily fall for a poor boy.
So, a woman like Petra could only take a liking to a man more formidable than herself.
Yang Yi understands all these principles, but the words from Anton were a bit too harsh, and Yang Yi was afraid Petra wouldn’t be able to save face and would send him away.
Moreover, Yang Yi genuinely felt uncomfortable speaking those words, but this was only his internal struggle, and because of shyness, saying that it wasn’t possible was out of the question. How could he, as a spy, be so feeble?
Now, it’s time to see how Petra would respond; Yang Yi was anxious yet expectant.
Petra’s complexion was a bit unpleasant, which is quite normal, as anyone would be angered by such a merciless treatment.
"You are very confident, but in my eyes, it’s just narcissism to an excess."
After Petra said this coldly, Yang Yi took a breath and said, "This isn’t narcissism; it’s just confidence, and the difference lies in whether one has sufficient prowess or not. I am lonely because I truly haven’t met anyone who can converse with me as equals. Oh, of course, I harbor genuine respect for certain masters in specific fields—I mean real masters."
"Oh, God."
Petra touched her forehead and shook her head, then with a wry smile, said, "Yet another lunatic who thinks he can do anything because he’s rich."
Yang Yi’s face darkened slightly, and then he said in a deep voice, "Lunatic? Does my confidence make you think I’m crazy? Alright then, in fact, I seldom talk about these things with others because they don’t deserve so much of my speech. You, however... are rather exceptional. You are smart, and I only show my sense of superiority to smart people. Since you think I’m narcissistic and arrogant, why not let me demonstrate my capabilities within our common fields of expertise?"
Yang Yi glanced at his watch again, this subconscious gesture showing his impatience. Then he said in a deep voice, "Don’t talk to me about finance, I’m not interested in that. Other than that, what would you like to discuss?"
Petra took a deep breath and said dispassionately, "For the first time, for the first time, someone has spoken to me so rudely and almost insultingly. I’m confident too, and I excel at many things."
"Like what?"
Petra bit her lip and said, "How about we start with something we are both interested in?"
"Fine, since I’m the more arrogant one, you initiate the topic. What do you want to talk about?"
Petra looked at Yang Yi and asked, "What is this? A competition of knowledge?"
"I guess so. My abilities are not limited to books, but knowledge from books seems to be the easiest way to showcase our differences visually. So, start with whatever you want to say."
Petra was unaccustomed to such confrontational dialogue, so Yang Yi’s proposal bewildered her somewhat. After thinking for a while, she said softly, "The signals originating from point P cannot propagate to events outside of P’s light cone because nothing travels faster than light..."
Yang Yi waved his hand, interrupting, "Therefore, they won’t be influenced by events occurring at P. The points inside the past light cone are P’s absolute past, the collection of all such events that can be reached by signals emitted from those events at or below the speed of light."
After finishing, Yang Yi said indifferently, "Hawking, A Brief History of Time, the second Chapter on the discussion of time and space. Please, could you pick a more challenging topic? I can recite A Brief History of Time from start to finish."
Yang Yi wasn’t boasting because he had read A Brief History of Time.
But Petra’s expression showed she didn’t believe it, because Yang Yi said he recited it, not just read it, and there’s a big difference between the two.
Seeing Petra’s disbelief, Yang Yi simply started reciting the book from the part Petra had begun, without any pause, until he finished the entire second Chapter.
"What, do you need me to continue reciting further?"
Petra bit her lip again, then with a heavy voice, said, "Your opinion about Mazer’s work..."
Without hesitation, Yang Yi said, "Are you referring to the Israeli astrophysicist? I’ve read his book Astrophysics, quite a coincidence, isn’t it? And even more coincidental, I memorized it as well and have my own understanding. I don’t mind explaining it to you, although I find it a bit of a waste of time, but if you need me to prove it, I don’t need to waste time."
Petra had a look of disbelief and said, "Memorized? Who would do such a thing?"
Yang Yi didn’t bother explaining and began reciting.
Of course, Yang Yi hadn’t read the book nor conducted any research, but now...
Now Anton didn’t need to give cues to Yang Yi because Anton had never read it either, but behind Yang Yi was a team, with Tang Guo and Schultz on it—everything Petra knew, he knew; what Petra didn’t know, he knew as well.
Prompted by Tang Guo’s sweet voice, Yang Yi could play this game all night long.
After Yang Yi recited the beginning, Petra held up her hand and said, "Stop, I believe you’ve read it. There really are people who do such tedious things."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Tedious? Well, it’s okay. I just happen to remember what I read, can’t help it, it’s a realm of genius, I don’t know if you understand or not."
This was a unique and quirky contest between two academically brilliant individuals, and so far, Yang Yi held a definitive edge, and he relentlessly mocked Petra.
Yang Yi was genuinely afraid of infuriating Petra, after all, it’s one thing to build up an impressive image, but he feared overdoing it might completely provoke her.
However, Petra’s resilience was stronger than Yang Yi anticipated.
Petra had the pride of an academic as well, and she pitched several questions, no longer book-based but rather those requiring understanding to answer.
And Yang Yi answered them all precisely, swiftly, and concisely.
And Yang Yi hadn’t even started asking his own questions.
Finally, Petra stopped speaking, and after pondering deeply with a frown, she said softly, "You... did you cheat? You just mentioned knowing a spy, and your performance is too magical for me to not start suspecting that you might be hiding an earpiece in your ear."
