Chapter 1031: Chapter 1036: Sacrifice is Inevitable
Sleep? As if I could get any sleep.
Michelle tossed and turned all night, and in the morning, she got up to shower and put on makeup. Yang Yi watched her tiredly, his gaze fixed on the dark circles under his eyes, following the silhouette of her back. Then there came a gentle knock on the door.
"Go and open the door!" Yang Yi called out to Michelle in a loud voice.
The door opened, and Reggie, surprised to see Michelle, was a bit unsure of what to say upon spotting Yang Yi still sitting on the bed. "Uh, about today..."
Yang Yi, looking exhausted, cut in, "You and Ferguson keep working. I need to catch up on some sleep. Anything else?"
"No, that’s all, uh, thanks, goodbye."
Reggie closed the door and left. Yang Yi then told Michelle, "You can go too, I’m going to sleep."
Having finished getting ready, Michelle glanced at Yang Yi and then left his room.
And then, Yang Yi actually fell asleep.
Around noon, he received a call from Michelle.
"Darling, you have to help me, I... I don’t know what to do..." she sobbed over the phone. Yang Yi initially thought Michelle had genuinely run into trouble, but in a flash, he understood she was just creating an opportunity to meet.
"Shut up, stop crying. What happened?"
"Patollof won’t let me go. If I want to leave, I have to pay him a large sum of money, or he’ll kill me. He really will do it, please, help me..." Michelle cried desperately, sounding utterly convincing. Irritated, Yang Yi snapped, "Fuck! Tell me where you are, I’m coming for you!"
Michelle gave an address, the location of a mid-range apartment complex, suitable for singles. While not cheap, it was within Michelle’s means to afford.
But why did they have to meet under such dramatic circumstances? Yang Yi wondered, frustrated and puzzled.
Couldn’t the janitor arrange a more normal-looking opportunity to meet? It was infuriating.
Yang Yi armed himself with a gun and a knife, then headed out, hailing a taxi to the address Michelle had given.
It wasn’t too far away, and half an hour later, Yang Yi arrived. He marched into the apartment building and knocked on the door number Michelle had given.
The door opened, and Michelle threw herself into Yang Yi’s arms, bursting into tears as soon as she saw him.
"Stop crying, let’s go inside and talk."
Yang Yi held Michelle as they entered the room, and once inside, she leaned on his shoulder, choking back sobs, "He’s waiting for you, in forty-five minutes."
Yang Yi spoke in a low voice, "Is it necessary to put on this act here?"
"I’m fine here, but we have to be careful in case someone is following you."
Michelle continued to cry, and Yang Yi, looking helpless, still had no choice but to comfort her.
"Stop crying, tell me what’s going on?"
"Patollof took me from my homeland, promising me a career as a model, an international supermodel, but then he made me... Thankfully, I met you. But Patollof has many men, he’s very powerful."
Michelle started crying again, and annoyed, Yang Yi said, "Enough crying. Now, I’m going to talk to him. You lead the way. Don’t worry, as long as I’m here, no one can hurt you."
Yang Yi took Michelle and left the apartment.
Once again, a scenarist had arranged this whole drama.
The meeting place indeed picked up a gang-like atmosphere. Yang Yi passed through a house occupied by a dozen men and, under someone’s order, left Michelle outside, entering an office alone.
As expected, Elvin was inside, alone.
"Sit down."
Yang Yi sat opposite Elvin and spread his hands, uncertain whether to address Michelle’s issue first or get straight to business.
Elvin spoke calmly, "This time the situation is a bit unusual. The information you provided was unexpected, and in such a short time, this was the best arrangement I could make in order for your contact to meet without raising suspicion."
Yang Yi nodded, "Alright, let’s get down to business first. Porter tasked me to find evidence that Aaron is a mole, and I’ve made it into Aaron’s operation. But now, Aaron has given me a strange task that I don’t understand—why sabotage an engagement?"
"Medron Family, or rather Medron Consortium, is in a financial crisis, desperately needing a large sum of money to pull through the ordeal. Otherwise, even if Medron Consortium doesn’t go bankrupt, they’ll have to carve out a big piece of themselves once again. So, whether Metinvest Bank provides financial support becomes incredibly crucial for the Medron Consortium."
"So, Grey-cloaked People want to bite off a piece of Medron Consortium and therefore need to sabotage Medron Consortium’s chances of acquiring funds."
"Yes, that’s a reasonable explanation."
"But that’s in the interest of the Grey-cloaked People. If Aaron doesn’t want to expose himself, shouldn’t the first task he gave me be a CIA mission?"
Elvin spread his hands and said, "I don’t know. Perhaps the task really is related to the CIA, but we just don’t know the reason yet. Your information is very helpful; we will start an investigation now."
"Good, I need help now. I want to complete this task as soon as possible, so I want to get close to Petra. I was wondering if you could do me a favor and arrange a public meeting with Petra at the right time."
Elvin nodded and said, "I understand your need. Next Tuesday, there will be a cocktail party. Petra will receive an invitation, and you will receive one too. Let Mark send you the invitation. He has the ability to expand the social circles of some powerful young individuals, and in fact, he often does such things."
Yang Yi thought for a moment and said, "That Michelle, is she qualified?"
Elvin smiled and said, "I can’t find a better choice. Well, I don’t know why you’re rejecting her. First of all, she really is beautiful, and beneath her beautiful appearance, she has exceptional abilities. We’ve trained her for fifteen years, fifteen years!"
"Why reject her? Let’s put it this way: a feast is laid out before you, but you’re only allowed to look, not to eat. Would you like that?"
Elvin spoke indifferently, "You can eat now. I mean, now you can eat. From now on, she will be your regular contact. You don’t have to be with her all the time, but when needed, she can conveniently pass messages for you. I think you should thank me."
Yang Yi said irritably, "I won’t blame you, but don’t expect me to thank you. Now tell me about her background."
"Bonnie Shaw, from Plymouth, New Hampshire, from a single-parent family. She has a striking appearance and physical attributes. She caught the eye of a model scout who took her from Plymouth to New York, to become a model. Of course, the person who brought her to New York didn’t really have the power to make her a world-famous model; instead, he made her a high-class escort. That person is Patollof. Of course, this is a false image we’ve created. In reality, Bonnie Shaw has been trained since she was young. She’s a qualified spy."
Yang Yi whispered, "A qualified spy?"
"Yes, she’s absolutely reliable, and now she’s yours."
"She’s mine? What do you mean by that?"
Elvin smiled, then he called out loudly, "Bring Michelle in!"
A man brought Michelle in, holding her.
Michelle, or rather, Bonnie Shaw, twisted her body a bit. Then Elvin gestured, "All right, that’s enough. Bonnie, you will take his orders from now on. Starting today, you are his regular liaison."
Bonnie looked at Yang Yi and simply nodded. At this moment, Elvin said, somewhat embarrassedly, "Well, I must remind you two, given the relationship you have established with each other, some things... are unavoidable. You both understand what I mean, right?"
Bonnie whispered, "Yes, I understand."
Elvin smiled and said, "Very well, please continue with the process that’s required."
The man holding Bonnie said to Yang Yi, "I’m the one who brought her from New Hampshire. You want to take her away now? That’s out of the question!"
Yang Yi impatiently said, "Cut the crap, how much?"
"One million US dollars!"
Bonnie shouted, "Even the airfare was paid out of my own pocket!"
Yang Yi raised his hand and said, "Stop talking, five hundred thousand dollars. Agree and I’ll write you a check."
"No checks, only cash."
Yang Yi said impatiently, "Wire transfer, right now, or I’m leaving."
After saying this, Yang Yi looked at Elvin. Elvin shrugged and laughed, "You offered the price, so you pay."
Yang Yi waved his hand irritably, but he still transferred five hundred thousand dollars to Patollof. Then, Bonnie belonged to him.
Everyone earnestly went through the process, and then Patollof voluntarily left his own office.
Elvin beckoned to Yang Yi and called him over, lowering his voice, "For this encounter, the opportunity we’ve created is indeed a bit too dramatic. So, in order to make you more credible to your subordinates, some sacrifices are inevitable."
Yang Yi was stunned for a moment and whispered, "So Patollof is the sacrifice?"
Elvin nodded gently.
Yang Yi whispered again, "He’s not your man? And you dare let me meet here?"
Elvin smiled and said, "Of course he’s not my man, but he’s someone I control. I can assure you of his reliability, but... I need to ensure your safety, and also, I need to enrich your image to make Aaron trust you completely and quickly."
"So you mean I can kill him."
"Yes."
Elvin unhesitatingly condemned Patollof to death. To ensure this meeting had no loose ends and that Yang Yi’s behavior matched his current identity, Patollof was sacrificed.
Elvin pointed at Bonnie, then he whispered, "Everything about her is impeccable, immune to any investigation from anyone. Now that you’ve paid, she’s your person. Now, you can take her away."
