Chapter 1004: 109th Chapter: Celebrities
Yang Yi hesitated for a moment, then he took Hegelhaus’s handgun.
At the moment of letting go, Yang Yi could see Hegelhaus’s helplessness and shock, but most of all, the reluctance of having to give in after being defeated by reality.
What is helplessness? Helplessness is when you watch things happen, watch them develop in the worst possible way, yet you are powerless to stop it.
After Yang Yi took the gun, Hegelhaus took a deep breath, and then he suddenly announced loudly, "Guys, I have something to announce."
Swallowing hard, Hegelhaus said with a heavy heart, "As you can see, I’ve lost the bet, and the stake was my handgun. So, do you want to know what the bet was about?"
When Hegelhaus spoke, his eyes were fixed on Yang Yi. If Yang Yi spoke up or gestured for him not to say it, Hegelhaus would not reveal the truth.
But Yang Yi did not react at all, so Hegelhaus continued loudly, "I bet that he couldn’t memorize the C130 and F16 flight manuals within twenty-four hours, and then succeed on his first simulation flight."
"What?"
"Are you kidding me!"
"Hahaha..."
"That’s bullshit. How could that be possible."
After the noisy crowd quieted down a bit, Hegelhaus continued loudly, "And then you saw, he succeeded, using just twenty-four hours, from complete unfamiliarity, to successfully completing his first instrument flight, without any guidance whatsoever."
The crowd became noisy again, and Hegelhaus kept his eyes on Yang Yi as he said in a deep voice, "There’s no need to doubt the authenticity, or, would you question my judgment?"
A flight instructor shouted, "I have no intention of doubting you, sir, but this... it’s just unbelievable. I mean, it sounds like a joke, something that couldn’t possibly happen."
Hegelhaus said gravely, "He started from scratch, became familiar with the trainer aircraft in one night, and you have also seen his performance that day—if your memory isn’t too bad, you should know what he’s managed to do during this time."
"It’s unbelievable, really, it’s just too unbelievable... I can’t believe it."
Hegelhaus replied coldly, "It’s hard to accept, I suppose. Our life’s work seems like a joke to him. He learns it if he wants to, understands it after one glance, he gets everything just by taking a look. I understand, yes, I understand how you feel. A plane is a complex machine, flying is a complicated matter, but he... just gets it."
The crowd fell silent, and Hegelhaus took a deep breath before saying, "Yes, there’s an emotion called jealousy, seeing someone achieve what we can’t. It hurts, but..."
Hegelhaus waved his hand and said, "Regardless, you have witnessed the emergence of a genius, the birth of a miracle. There’s no need for jealousy, no need to be dissatisfied, because we are not of the same kind. This world does have geniuses, it truly does."
After speaking, Hegelhaus said in a heavy tone, "Salute to the genius, mortals, and then... go do whatever you have to do, as if none of this ever happened."
Now, people looked at Yang Yi with complicated expressions.
In the United States, in the CIA, you can’t be too humble. No one here is humble; everyone is desperately trying to show off themselves, no one would hide their talent.
So at this time, Yang Yi didn’t want to be too modest. He bowed slightly to Hegelhaus with gratitude and said, "Thank you for your instruction, instructor. I might indeed have a talent for learning to fly, although it might be a bit late to discover it now, but I am very honored to learn here, especially to be taught by you. And I must state one thing, that your demeanor has won me over. I have won, and you have shown the grace that a gentleman should have, thank you."
Hegelhaus sighed and said, "There’s no need for sweet talk, kid. To win is to win, to lose is to lose. If I had won I wouldn’t have been polite to you, but since you won, I’ll definitely keep my promise. Tomorrow I will take you to fly the advanced trainer jet, then I’ll take you to fly the real aircraft. That’s it, see you tomorrow."
Once Hegelhaus finished, he turned away and then he shouted loudly, "What are you still doing here? Continue with your own things! Or does anyone else want to bet with me?"
The crowd dispersed in a commotion. Hegelhaus left without saying anything more, and after the crowd had spread out, Reggie approached Yang Yi and said, "Wow, I really didn’t expect it. In the end, you won. You actually did it, that’s really unbelievable. So, what are you going to do next?"
Yang Yi pointed at his head with his finger and said softly, "Go back to sleep. My head is about to explode with pain. Do you think doing all this in twenty-four hours comes without a price to pay? Fuck, I’m tired to death, very sleepy, and my head is about to burst."
Yang Yi was indeed tired, but he wasn’t sleepy because he was too excited at the moment, and his head didn’t hurt either.
Of course, there was some discomfort, but nowhere near as painful as Yang Yi had made it out to be.
After returning to his room, Yang Yi threw himself into bed without undressing and entered dreamland.
He slept for a long time until after 3 pm. Yang Yi had caught up on sleep, which was quite long for a daytime nap, but he still seemed a bit listless after waking, as mental exhaustion wasn’t something a nap could completely remedy.
But Yang Yi decided to go to the shooting range anyways.
He couldn’t idle, as wasting time was wasting life.
Arriving at the shooting range, Yang Yi realized he had become famous.
There were people at the range. No one greeted Yang Yi, but those who saw him had a different look in their eyes. Even the operatives looked at him with less hostility, more curiosity, and respect.
That was the treatment of becoming famous—after accomplishing an incredible feat, he couldn’t avoid attention even if he wanted to.
"Hey, buddy, heard you won a handgun! You won Major Hegelhaus’s service pistol."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "You’ve heard?"
Ben replied excitedly, "Of course, I’ve heard. Now everyone knows that an unbelievable genius has appeared. Although some say you were already a pilot, everyone still believes in Major Hegelhaus. It’s just incredible. Did you bring the gun with you?"
"No, I’ve put it away."
"Wow, then it’s true. Can you bring the gun next time? I really want to see it."
"Sure, no problem."
Ben looked at Yang Yi with admiration and said, "Compared to your shooting skills... how come I never realized you were a genius before?"
