Chapter 1064: One thousand and sixty-two, revisit
Hearing Luo Shu’s praise, Luo Zheng was delighted, "Sis, is there something urgent over there? Why are you leaving so soon? Did brother-in-law come back with you?"
"He came back together with me. He’s chatting with his comrades right now and will come over in a bit," Luo Shu said with a smile. This was the place where they had spent a long period of time earlier.
"Where are Xixi and Yeye?" He still missed those two little ones. Back when they left, they were still so tiny; he wondered what they looked like now.
Talking about her children, Luo Shu couldn’t help but smile, "They’ve been playing non-stop these past few days, wandering around Jinchen every day with their grandparents. Today, when they heard we were coming to visit you, they insisted on tagging along. Right now, they’re with Hanmo."
Just as they were speaking, the sound of children laughing and chatting came from outside.
"Xixi, let’s have a race and see who can run faster, okay?" The little brother looked at the huge playground, thinking about how his father used to sweat and train here, and couldn’t help but feel excited.
"I’m not racing you; you always cheat." The little sister strode toward the lounge. Even though childhood memories lingered, the image of her uncle in her mind had already become somewhat fuzzy.
"Fine, no racing. But when have I ever cheated?" The little brother rolled his eyes and chased after his sister.
While talking, the two of them entered the lounge. Seeing Luo Zheng smiling at them, they obediently called out, "Uncle!"
Luo Zheng nodded joyfully, "Are you thirsty? How about I go to the cafeteria and get some mung bean soup for you two?" These two kids were like mini versions of his sister and brother-in-law.
"Uncle, I don’t want any." The little sister shook her head.
"Is mung bean soup tasty?" The little brother’s eyes lit up, his curiosity piqued; he always had a keen interest in food.
"It’s cool and refreshing, really delicious," Luo Zheng said with a smile. He remembered how this little nephew loved eating from the moment he was born. He often thought back to the time he visited them and saw the boy tightly clutching his milk bottle, refusing to let it go.
"Alright, then I’ll go with Uncle to get some!" The little brother hurried forward and grabbed Luo Zheng’s hand. His enthusiasm for food was absolutely unyielding.
Luo Shu and the little sister both rolled their eyes playfully. They really worried whether one day the little brother might be lured away by someone using delicious treats.
"Where are you two headed?" Lu Hanmo saw Luo Zheng holding the little brother’s hand and asked.
"Brother-in-law!" Luo Zheng greeted Lu Hanmo cheerfully.
"Dad, Uncle is taking me to eat something yummy; we’ll be back in a while." The little brother clung to Luo Zheng’s hand and paced forward, his impatience to try the mung bean soup evident.
Watching the two gradually walk away, Lu Hanmo shook his head with a smile.
"Shall we go and check out the place we used to live? I just spoke with the commander, and he said it’s still vacant," Lu Hanmo suggested with a smile as he saw Luo Shu and the little sister coming out. He had a soft spot for the memories, cherishing the time he and Shushu spent there.
"Sure!" Luo Shu walked forward and reached out to hold Lu Hanmo’s hand. The three of them strolled toward the Guard’s Members Courtyard. Though they hadn’t lived there as long as they had in the Northwest Guard District, it was still a place filled with cherished memories.
Arriving at the small courtyard they once called home, they pushed the door open to reveal a clean yard, free from weeds. Stepping into the house, not a speck of dust could be seen, and the walls were freshly whitewashed. It seemed evident that someone regularly came to tidy up the place.
"Let’s stay here tonight," Luo Shu suggested. She wanted to relive the old days.
"Alright!" Lu Hanmo nodded. He had the same thought.
"Yay! We get to stay here!" The little sister jumped up in excitement. She had just heard her mom say that even when she and her brother were still in her belly, they had lived here.
Lu Hanmo chuckled and gently ruffled the little sister’s hair, "Uncle is staying next door. Tonight, you can also go over to his place to play."
Smiling, the little sister nodded, "Dad, Mom, I’m going out to play for a while; I’ll be right back." She had just spotted a bunch of kids in the courtyard catching cicadas.
"Go ahead!" Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo nodded affably.
The little sister waved to Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo and dashed off like the wind.
As they watched the little sister disappear into the distance, Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo felt a twinge of guilt. They knew that playing was every child’s nature, and their years spent training in isolation had robbed their children of experiences other kids shared. This time, they resolved to let them play to their heart’s content. They believed that their children wouldn’t misbehave.
The little sister ran outside, heading toward the group of children catching cicadas. One of the kids, dark-skinned, was up in the tree trying to grab a cicada, while the rest craned their necks to watch. None of them noticed the little sister approaching.
The cicada’s coloration blended with the tree’s bark, but with her sharp eyesight, the little sister quickly spotted it. "The cicada is on the right side of the tree trunk," she called out to the child in the tree, who had been struggling to find it.
Her sudden words startled the group, who now turned their attention to her.
"Who are you? Why haven’t we seen you before?"
"Are you new here? Where do you live?"
"Your dress is so pretty—just like the ones worn by princesses on TV." The group became so captivated by the little sister that they entirely forgot about the cicada they had been hunting.
The little sister’s skin was snow-white, her large round eyes reminiscent of black grapes. She had a delicate and charming upturned nose and small, rosy lips akin to cherries. The children had never encountered someone so beautiful. Naturally, they found her fascinating.
"I don’t live here. I came with my dad, mom, and brother to visit my uncle," the little sister said with a smile. This was her first time interacting with so many other kids.
"So you’ll be leaving soon?" Many of the little boys looked disappointed. How wonderful would it be if such a beautiful child were a permanent part of the Guard’s Members Courtyard.
"I’m leaving tomorrow morning. Aren’t you catching cicadas? Let me join you," the little sister offered, feeling slightly shy about the crowd gathered around her.
"Do you like cicadas? I’ll climb up and catch one for you," a little boy said enthusiastically, already jogging toward the tree.
"I’ll make you a grass hat like the one I’m wearing!" A boy with a slightly bigger head pointed to his woven willow-branch hat. If not for his oversized noggin, he would have simply handed her his hat directly.
