Chapter 306: Chapter 306: I Must Love Her as Before
The Bi Family’s residence was situated at the border between Xiangcheng and Sucheng—it was a one and a half hour drive from the temple.
When An Yan and her group arrived, it was already nearing noon.
The bright midday sun enveloped the exquisite courtyard house.
Fu Shiyan looked at the vermilion gate and the two heroic stone lions standing on either side of it, feeling an inexplicable sense of familiarity.
An Yan led him by the hand across the threshold, and they happened to bump into Lu Yun, who was carrying a small basket.
Lu Yun stood there stunned, even rubbing her eyes before hurrying forward to poke the man’s arm.
A solid touch confirmed that Fu Shiyan standing before her was real.
She clapped her hands with force, "It’s been five years, and you are back! My granddaughter’s wishes have finally come true!"
With tears brimming in her eyes, she turned and ran into the house, "Old man, Shiyan is back!"
Bi Mang, who was playing chess with Bi Zhan at a square table, watched as a chess piece plopped from his fingers.
He cleared his throat, "Can’t you be more composed?"
Lu Yun glared at him, "You’re composed—your chess piece dropped!"
Bi Zhan laughed aloud.
Bi Mang gave him a look, "It’s normal for the elderly to have shaky hands and feet."
Bi Zhan agreed, "Yan can give you a few acupuncture treatments."
Thinking of those long silver needles made Bi Mang’s heart tremble; he was not afraid of swords or guns, but he dreaded those thin, long needles.
He scoffed and cursed the unfilial progeny for digging up his shortcomings.
Taking a deep breath, he stood up to leave when An Yan arrived with Fu Shiyan, followed by Mu Qianfan and Fu Jinqiao.
An Yan’s bright eyes curved, "Grandpa, we’re back!"
Bi Mang looked at Fu Shiyan, his eyes moist, his voice choked with emotion, "It’s good you’re back. Sit down and tell grandpa how you two met."
Despite his smooth speech, the hand holding his teacup trembled slightly.
Lu Yun teased him, "Have you developed Parkinson’s? Shaking like that?"
An Yan held back her laughter, "Grandpa, shall I give you a few needles?"
Bi Mang sat up straight, placing the teacup on the table, deciding not to drink it, "No need, it’s nothing."
An Yan was about to grab her bag, "Some ailments should be treated while the symptoms are mild—waiting until they worsen not only reduces the effectiveness of the treatment but can also lead to other complications."
Bi Mang hastily interjected, "It’s just that seeing Shiyan come back got me a bit excited, don’t use the needles."
Everyone burst into laughter.
Bi Mang breathed a sigh of relief, his tense emotions finally easing.
An Yan recounted the events of the past few days.
Bi Mang pointed at Bi Zhan with a thin veil of anger, "You unfilial offspring, you met Shiyan last night but didn’t tell me or your grandma, deliberately making me look foolish today! As a punishment, you’ll join Bi Chong fishing on the river: if each of you don’t catch ten fish, don’t bother coming back."
Bi Zhan chuckled lightly, "Grandpa, if Achong knew that his five-fish penalty has now turned into ten, he’d probably jump in the river."
Bi Mang glanced at An Yan, "Shiyan will stay and play chess with me; the rest of you go help Bi Chong fish, or there’ll be no fish for lunch."
An Yan of course understood that this was a ruse to send them away—he had something he wanted to say to Fu Shiyan.
So, An Yan left with Mu Qianfan, Fu Jinqiao, and Bi Zhan, taking their gear to the riverbank.
Inside the house, only Bi Mang and Fu Shiyan remained, while Lu Yun went to the back yard to pick roses to make fresh flower cakes.
"Do you still know how to play chess?" Bi Mang asked.
Fu Shiyan nodded, "I just don’t remember people and things from before; my other living skills and learning abilities haven’t been forgotten."
Bi Mang nodded, "Then let’s play a game."
Fu Shiyan nodded in agreement and first topped up Bi Mang’s tea, "Grandfather, please enjoy the tea."
Bi Mang hummed affirmatively and gently sipped the tea.
The purpose wasn’t to play chess, Bi Mang told him about An Yan’s origins and her upbringing in the Bi Family.
He sighed lightly, "I don’t know how much of your memory you can recover, but today I’ll tell you everything about Yan. She’s my only precious granddaughter; you cannot let her be sad again."
Fu Shiyan placed a white chess piece, "Rest assured, I will protect her and our children for the rest of my life."
Bi Mang nodded, looking at him, "On the day of your accident, which is exactly five years ago today, Yan gave birth to Anan and Yanyan. Then, hearing of your accident, she became so emotional that she bled profusely, requiring a transfusion of 4800cc of blood. She certainly hasn’t told you about this."
Fu Shiyan’s hand, which was reaching for the chess pieces, gradually clenched into a fist, trembling slightly, "She... indeed, hasn’t told me."
"Sigh, my granddaughter always brings happy news, never the woes. The reason I’m telling you this is that I want you to know that while you were serving the country, striving for world peace, your woman was fighting for you. It’s not terrible to lose memories, but don’t lose the ability to love her."
"I understand, Grandfather. I assure you, I will love her as I always have."
Bi Mang uttered affirmatively, then suddenly his eyes widened, "You little rascal! Taking advantage of the situation to capture my pieces? You never dared to do so before."
Fu Shiyan chuckled, "Before coming here, Yanyan did my homework for me. She said you were willing to play chess with me because I always leave you without a single piece, creating a challenge for you."
"Did she tell you that?"
Fu Shiyan nodded without doubt.
Bi Mang laughed heartily, "Fell for the little girl’s trap."
Fu Shiyan laughed softly, returning all the captured pieces and rearranged his own, "Grandfather, please go ahead."
Bi Mang felt satisfied, "That’s more like it. You should come more often."
"Yes."
Meanwhile, An Yan and the others arrived at the riverbank and saw Bi Chong lying on a beach chair with a large parasol sheltering him. He lay back with his arms folded, legs crossed, and a wide-brimmed hat sitting on his face, the picture of contentment.
When he heard footsteps, he lazily removed his hat, "You’re here."
An Yan asked, "What are you role-playing here?"
Bi Chong: "?"
"Second Master Jiang."
Bi Chong: "..."
"Other people’s Jiang Taigong fishes for those who are willing to be caught. You’re Second Master Jiang fishing, only able to catch blindfish."
Bi Chong’s mouth twitched, "At least I still might catch shrimp!"
An Yan, sitting on the mat with Fu Jinqiao, turned and smiled at him, "It’s the blind leading the blind."
Bi Chong: "...Sis, are you here to stimulate me?"
An Yan, "I’m here to save you. Because our brother offended Grandfather, he ordered you and him to each catch ten fish to bring back."
Bi Chong laughed upon hearing this, "Then you really are here to save me."
With An Yan’s help, Bi Chong quickly completed the task.
The group returned to the Siheyuan, with An Yan and Fu Jinqiao accompanying Lu Yun to cook.
Soon, everyone gathered around the table.
This gathering was different from the past because with Fu Shiyan present, everyone’s smiles shone even brighter.
After lunch, An Yan and the others headed to the Fu Corporation private airport and took a flight back to Jiangcheng.
