Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Have You Not Been Slapped Enough?
She sat on the sofa, her heart feeling somewhat weary as she looked up at the ceiling’s chandelier, its sparkling crystal spheres reflected her tiny silhouette.
She remembered the year she turned five, how she had just attended her mother’s funeral, still clad in mourning attire, when she was sent to the countryside of Xiangcheng.
She didn’t know why she had ended up in such a remote and impoverished place, and it wasn’t until she saw the car disappearing into the distance that she realized she seemed to have been abandoned.
She ran after the car for a long distance, until it was no longer in sight.
The barking of dogs all around made her tremble with fear, she called out loudly for her dad and mom, but no one responded.
The family that took her in was very poor; her foster father was always drinking, and her foster mother was a weak woman.
Every time her foster father finished drinking, he would brutally beat her and her foster mother, until, when she was six, her foster mother finally fought back.
Her foster mother hacked her foster father’s neck with a knife, splattering blood all over her face.
She was terrified, not because she feared her foster mother would hurt her, but because she was afraid she would be left without a home again.
Her foster father died from excessive blood loss, and her foster mother was imprisoned for murder.
She was raised by the ninth aunt and others, staying with each household for a week at a time.
She vowed to wait for her foster mother to be released so she could take good care of her.
But she would never have that day, as her foster mother was diagnosed with lung cancer half a year into her sentence and passed away three months later.
On the day of her foster mother’s death, An Yan hid in a corner at the ninth aunt’s house, crying until her eyes were swollen, feeling truly like the child Yang Suhua had described, cursed to cause the death of her parents.
During that time, she began to become depressed and withdrawn.
It was the ninth aunt and many other uncles and aunts who guided her, helping her gradually come out of the darkness.
She grew up eating the food from a hundred families until she was eight, when an elderly man of about sixty years of age arrived in the village.
He saw that she was uniquely talented and capable of being molded, promising her the best education, the best life, and hoped for everyone’s consent to take her away.
After consultation, everyone felt that growing up in this impoverished place, she would not have a bright future, and thus they agreed to let the old man take her away.
And with that departure, the trajectory of her life was changed.
The sound of music from a WeChat video call interrupted An Yan’s memories.
An Yan looked at the caller’s avatar and clicked to answer, her lips curving into a smile.
"Old man!"
The elderly man in the video furrowed his brows, "Don’t be disrespectful, call me Grandpa!"
"Call what?"
"Grandpa!"
"I’m here!" An Yan laughed heartily.
Seeing the old man’s face fall, she called out, "Master!"
The old man snorted.
An Yan stopped teasing him, "Haha, I should give you some respect and call you Grandpa then!"
The old man smiled helplessly, "You really are mischievous! Tell Grandpa, how have things been at the An Family?"
"Pretty good, Grandpa."
The old man sighed, "You child, always bearing only good news. I heard from Bi Chong that those people at the An Family always bully you. How much suffering you must endure with your temperament!"
"It’s okay, I don’t endure it anymore." An Yan didn’t want him to worry, swiftly changing the subject, "How’s Grandma?"
"She’s making fresh flower cake for you! The roses in the garden are blooming beautifully, and she’s picked a lot to make them for you, having Bi Chong send them over."
At this moment, Bi Chong’s face squeezed into the frame, "Boss, you’ve really done me in! Fu Shiyan’s men are as persistently annoying as a plaster."
"It’s simply training your ability to escape, keeping you out of mischief."
"Or maybe I should go to the U.S. and look for Michael..."
An Yan’s face changed suddenly, interrupting him, "Don’t even think about it. He’s very dangerous; I’ve already sent people to look for him. Don’t cause me trouble, you hear?"
Bi Chong sounded an acknowledgment, "I got it, I won’t go then, why are you getting mad?"
Seeing An Yan’s face cool down, he realized she was really angry, "Oh man, I won’t go, really, I swear!"
An Yan took a deep breath, "Let’s stop here for now. Come back when Grandma’s fresh flower cakes are ready."
Bi Chong wanted to say something but the other party had already hung up the video call.
He pouted at the darkened screen, then got smacked hard on the back of the head.
The elder snorted, "I was talking to my granddaughter, what are you butting in for? Now look, she’s angry and hung up the phone!"
Bi Chong pouted, "Grandpa, aren’t you being too biased? I’m your biological grandson, after all!"
"Bi Mang, why are you hitting my grandson?" An old woman carrying a basket of roses walked in, glaring at the elder.
Bi Mang huffed, "Your grandson is asking for the moon! He was planning to go to the U.S. to look for Michael, so An Yan got angry."
The old woman also smacked him hard on the back of the head, "Just stay put at home, you are not allowed to go anywhere!"
Bi Chong rubbed the back of his head, "Once you’re done with the fresh flower cakes, I’ll head back to Jiangcheng to deliver them to the boss."
The old woman glanced at him and walked into the kitchen.
She immediately burst into tears; she had already lost one grandson, she couldn’t afford to lose An Yan and Bi Chong as well.
An Yan looked at the darkened screen, feeling utterly exhausted.
She got up to wash up, changed into pajamas, and sank into the large bed.
Perhaps sleep would relieve all worries.
In the dead of night, Fu Shiyan sat in the rocking chair in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, the ashtray on the table full of cigarette butts.
He glanced at his phone; the small group chat was in uproar, talking about everything under the sun, but when it came time to say goodnight, a certain person did not send any more messages...
The next day, An Yan arrived at school.
The announcement board posted the latest campus notice.
It downplayed Guan Lulu’s disruptive behavior on campus and damaging the school’s atmosphere. After consultation with the school’s leaders, Guan Lulu received a notice of censure, while An Yirou and the other three students were not mentioned in this notice.
An Yan smirked at the corner of her lips.
If Fu Shiyan had not been there that day, she would have certainly been the main character of this notice, and the punishment would not have been just a full school notice but expulsion.
"How does it feel, An Yan, are you very angry?" Guan Lulu pushed through the crowd, bumping into An Yan’s shoulder, "Don’t think that just because President Fu said a few words that day, you think he was backing you up. Who do you think you are!"
An Yan dusted off the dirt from her shoulder, "Didn’t you get enough slaps already?"
Guan Lulu’s pupils shrank a bit, "What are you trying to do?"
An Yan gave her a look, "Are you a whitewasher? Stop flaunting your presence in front of me. If you annoy me, I might just give you a few more slaps."
"You!" Guan Lulu watched An Yan’s departing figure and stomped her feet in frustration.
At the Fu Corporation President’s office.
Han Yang knocked and entered, "President Fu, Principal Guan Dong of Jiang University wants to schedule a meeting with you about the laboratory donation."
Fu Shiyan lifted his eyelids and said, "Check the latest notice of Jiang University for me, I want to know the result."
Soon, Han Yang reported back, "The latest notice criticizes Guan Lulu for disrupting the campus atmosphere."
Fu Shiyan’s pen paused during file review, "Is that all?"
"Yes."
"Tell Principal Guan that Fu Corporation will not provide any more funding to Jiang University from now on, because I hate being deceived the most."
Han Yang nodded, "Understood."
