Chapter 828: 818 Rebirth in the 80s (1) Fourth Update

Ye Shaohua pursed her lips. Since she didn’t understand the plot unfolding here, she refrained from speaking.

Seeing her silence, the woman’s brow furrowed.

The man, who was the original protagonist’s father, had a very honest look on his face. "Let’s discuss this matter later. Shaohua is only eighteen; there’s no rush for her to get married. Besides, Xingxue, who is a year older than her, hasn’t married yet either."

"How can they be compared?" The Ye matriarch gave the man a sidelong glance.

The man seemed to think of something, and upon hearing what the woman said, he didn’t respond, appearing to agree with her.

Although Ye Shaohua had not received the details of the plot yet, listening to their conversation, she could guess some of it. These two people were probably the original protagonist’s parents.

Get married?

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

It was at this moment that footsteps were heard from outside.

Ye Shaohua tilted her head and saw a young woman in a floral dress entering.

The floral dress was somewhat old, but had clearly been made with care. The woman, her hair in two thick braids, looked very attractive.

Ye Shaohua had her answer—this must be the original character’s elder sister, Ye Xingxue.

"Mom and Dad, what are you doing?" Ye Xingxue, with a book in her hands and a smile on her face, asked.

The look on the faces of both Ye parents softened upon seeing Xingxue, but not by much. The Ye matriarch merely asked, "Have you not fed the pigs at home yet? Where did you run off to again, you naughty girl?"

"I have college entrance exams coming up, don’t I?" Ye Xingxue’s cheeks reddened. "Xun Cheng is also a university student, so I went to ask him some questions about the exams."

When Ye Xingxue mentioned this, the Ye matriarch stopped what she was doing and looked at her with narrowed eyes. "You talked to Xun Cheng?"

"Mhm, he’s a very nice person."

Upon hearing this, the Ye matriarch seemed contemplative.

Only then did Xingxue appear to notice Ye Shaohua. "Second Sister, why are you here? Oh right, the sugar you asked me to bring you yesterday."

Saying this, she produced a piece of maltose.

Seeing this, the Ye matriarch’s face darkened. She reached out and took the maltose, "You’re so grown up and still eating sugar? Don’t you know the situation our family is in? Along with several children who need to go to school, you’d be better off buying some flour home or doing something useful. Just like your father, totally useless, a natural-born debt-bringer."

The Ye patriarch chuckled in response to her words.

He didn’t know what to say but glanced at Ye Shaohua after the Ye matriarch had left. "Your mother is just trying to look out for you. Listen to her."

This second daughter had always been hard to please ever since she was little.

Looking at her expressionless face, the Ye patriarch shook his head.

He left the house, carrying a hoe.

After everyone had left, Ye Shaohua finally received the plot.

Though it was modern-day, it was set in the 1980s, technology was still in its infancy with hardly any development.

There were no cellphones, no internet, even electricity was scarce.

Most people in the village still used kerosene lamps.

Most importantly, people of this era had a prominent feature: a strong preference for sons over daughters. Both Ye parents had two daughters first, Ye Xingxue and Ye Shaohua, followed by a cherished son, Ye Xinghui.

The Ye Family was not well-off with three children to raise, and Ye Xinghui was entering the first year of high school this year.

High school fees were not negligible, coupled with living expenses, and a family of five needed to eat. After weighing options, the Ye matriarch decided to marry Ye Shaohua off.

She was just a daughter, who would have to be married off sooner or later, and she chose the Xun Family.

The Xun Family was one of the wealthiest in the village, already living in a two-story house, able to eat meat every day.

Xun Cheng was their only son, also commendably admitted to a university, and this year he returned as his grandmother was eager for a grandchild.

The Ye matriarch had been intending to find someone to marry Ye Shaohua off to, and the current situation was just right. Her daughter might not excel in other aspects, but she had a face like a city girl’s—pale and beautiful.

Her eyes were dark and lively; the Ye matriarch had long recognized the value of this second daughter. Even if not to the Xun Family, she would have found another wealthy match to marry her off to.

With the Xun Family, it was a perfect match.

The Xun Family was wealthy and would offer a generous bride price.

But the situation was not that simple.

When the plot reached this point, Ye Shaohua’s mouth twitched.

She was basically about to be sold off.

Ye Shaohua had experienced many worlds, but she felt particularly speechless about this one.

"I had this dress made for you today in town. Wear it tomorrow; we’ll have guests coming over." When the Ye matriarch returned home in the evening, she was beaming as she brought a dress to Ye Shaohua.

Ye Shaohua looked down at it.

It was a white dress with blue flowers, a vintage floral pattern.

Tailored from cut cloth, sleeveless, with modestly sized flowers, it didn’t look as bad as she had imagined in a contemporary sense.

It reached just to her knees.

When Ye Xinghui returned from playing with a group of friends, the Ye matriarch promptly put aside the dress and fetched a piece of maltose from the bedroom, her face nearly creasing with joy, "Little brother, you’re just in time. Have some!"

It was the same piece of maltose that Ye Xingxue had brought for Ye Shaohua earlier in the day, and which the Ye matriarch had taken back.

Ye Xinghui, with shoes as clean as a city boy’s, seemed impatient at the sight of the maltose, waving his hand dismissively, "I don’t want it."

Then sitting on a stool, the Ye matriarch brought him some water. "Where have you been today?"

"There’s talk that someone from the Imperial City has come to the big estate at the head of the village. I went to take a look and just saw the military," Ye Xinghui’s eyes lit up, "I wonder who’s staying there."

"It doesn’t matter who’s staying there, it’s of no concern to us commoners," Ye Xingxue responded indifferently, her thoughts elsewhere.

After taking a sip of his drink, Ye Xinghui finally noticed Ye Shaohua standing there with the new dress. His brows furrowed suddenly as if he had remembered something.

"Mom’s making you marry someone? You agreed?" He slammed his bowl on the table, "Can’t you fight for yourself?"

Seeing Ye Shaohua’s silent demeanor, he was infuriated. They always said that at home, boys were favored over girls, but why could his elder sister study?

It was clearly a problem with his second sister’s personality—was it fair to blame everything on the parents?
