Chapter 210: 209 Cold Palace Abandoned Concubine (7) First Watch of the Night
Ye Shaohua rose to her feet, accepted the gift, her expression indifferent.
No, I’m afraid that you—
Won’t be able to bear the consequences.
Once she had taken the splendid garments, the eunuch supervisor finally withdrew his gaze, a trace of contempt appearing on his face, "This is an imperial grace granted by His Majesty to you. Someone as cruel as you should not have been invited to the banquet."
Ye Shaohua lowered her eyes, and the eunuch supervisor, thinking she was too overcome with emotion to speak, turned with satisfaction to go back and report.
Yuwen Jing and Yuwen Zhe were in the midst of receiving envoys.
Upon seeing the eunuch supervisor returning, Yuwen Jing and Yuwen Zhe slowed their pace a few steps behind the envoys.
"How did it go?" Yuwen Jing glanced at the eunuch, his voice lowered.
But, when he noticed that the small eunuch following behind him no longer held the palace dress, he knew his scheme had succeeded.
The eunuch supervisor bowed respectfully before replying: "To report to Your Majesty, the Noble Consort has accepted it."
In his voice, there was an unavoidable hint of disdain.
Hearing this, Yuwen Jing remembered the consequences and had no doubt that Ye Shaohua would agree, considering such a simple-minded person could not fathom what they were truly plotting.
However, he still hesitated a little.
Especially after that day’s encounter with Ye Shaohua, he hadn’t felt any guilt before, but ever since then, a faint sense of remorse had lingered in him.
Noticing the hesitation on his face, Yuwen Zhe immediately reminded, "Your Majesty, General Ye will soon return."
With the Military Talisman in her hand commanding a hundred thousand elite troops, and with the Imperial City’s defenses depleted, if General Ye were to rebel, they would have no means of counteracting it. If they did not resolve this soon, his throne may become unstable.
With this reminder from Yuwen Zhe, Yuwen Jing suppressed the last trace of doubt in his eyes.
**
Ye Shaohua was dressed in a noble and splendid imperial concubine’s attire, her presence immensely formidable.
The fact that her original body’s appearance had not been that of a gentle and scholarly Qu Huashang but instead possessed a sharp, striking beauty, added to the indolent and enchanting quality of her slightly narrowed, almond eyes. A mere glance could almost render one powerless to resist.
Even Shuangyue, who had seen the young lady’s beauty, stood there stunned for a moment before proceeding to adorn Ye Shaohua’s hair with decorations.
Ye Shaohua brushed all the gold and silver ornaments on the table aside and casually pierced her hair with a golden hairpin.
Shuangyue was about to speak, but upon looking up, she saw the golden hairpin shimmer in the sunlight, complementing Ye Shaohua’s snow-white complexion marvelously. Any additional decoration would have seemed superfluous.
So she swallowed her words.
A line of palace maids led Ye Shaohua out, Shuangyue following behind, but she was stopped due to her inadequate status.
As Ye Shaohua walked along the corridor with the others, she realized that something was amiss.
She frowned, but before she could speak, a faint scent filled her nostrils, followed by a sight of pure white enveloping her vision.
Before she could react, her entire body was pulled into an adjacent room by a pair of long hands.
"Do you know what Yuwen Jing is planning next? He’s inviting you so openly and yet you dare to go?" She heard a voice, clear as the sound of Jade Stone, the low tone tinged with anger.
Ye Shaohua pondered, looking at the hands that had released her, before raising her eyes to meet those of her captor.
The person stood facing her, clad in snow-colored robes with only subtle patterns upon them. When the robe’s sleeve had brushed over her face, she’d felt a burst of coldness.
Youyou stood in front of her like perpetual snow that never melted on Snow Mountain, his dark eyes magnetic, captivating one at a glance.
Only then did Ye Shaohua remember his question and replied leisurely, "If he tells me to go, I have to go."
To Yuwen Yun, her response sounded like those of someone willing to do anything for Yuwen Jing.
"You seemed so astute the other day, how can you not sense this now?" he looked at her indifferent face, probably realizing she knew what was at stake. His expression grew colder, "Of course, it’s like that, you reap what you sow!"
With a sweep of his wide sleeve, Ye Shaohua was pushed out the door by a gust of wind, and the door was slammed shut with a "bang."
Outside, the same group of palace maids and eunuchs awaited her, unflinching, leading Ye Shaohua onward as if nothing had happened.
Ye Shaohua’s gaze sharpened. Such high control over internal strength.
Hadn’t they said that this man hadn’t returned to the Palace for many years? How come these palace servants were so obedient?
If he truly aimed for the throne, all of Yuwen Jing’s painstaking schemes would be in vain.
As she pondered, the palace maids had already brought her to the Main Palace Gate.
At a single glance, she saw Yuwen Jing seated in the place of honor, with the Queen Consort, Qu Huashang, beside him.
Most were not surprising, but Ye Shaohua was curious why Qu Huashang would appear in such a place.
Qu Huashang was generally seen as a breath of fresh air in the Imperial City. She disdained first-rank warriors and held a low opinion of the crude vassal states. She wouldn’t usually attend such banquets.
So why was she here now?
Moreover, she wasn’t wearing formal attire but instead very plain clothes, which stood out starkly amidst the crowd of splendidly dressed individuals.
As soon as Ye Shaohua made her appearance, no one in the room could overlook her stunning beauty.
Especially the vassal state princes, living on the borders of the desert, were accustomed to coarse and robust women. Seeing a woman from the Central Plains with such delicate features, their eyes couldn’t look away.
The King had dared not stare too blatantly at the Queen Consort, and besides, the Queen Consort had a rather plain countenance. But now, this lady held his gaze unyieldingly.
Especially when Yuwen Jing merely threw a cursory glance at Ye Shaohua, "Get her a seat."
Perhaps because Ye Shaohua’s role was only limited to this, Yuwen Jing didn’t bother introducing her to anyone present. The ministers, some not familiar with her, merely knew of her as the ruthless former queen consort, now a discarded one.
No one approached her, wishing to keep their distance, as they believed her end was near. Everyone knew the Emperor was wary of General Ye’s family, and interacting with her was a complete waste, possibly endangering one’s entire lineage.
