Chapter 1085: Chapter 148 : Party Crasher
*Sasha*
“Welcome all of you,” I said to the ten students gathered for the first class.
I had a garden party arranged for them in the palace gardens so they could all meet each other, and I could help get them excited about the upcoming school year.
All ten girls sat around the large banquet table. I sat at the head and raised my glass of sparkling cider.
“The ten of you have been carefully selected to be the first students at a special new school where you’ll have the opportunity to learn about your powers and gifts and how they can benefit the realms.”
Janice creased her brow at me. “How will my powers be helpful? I get visions of the past.”
I smiled warmly at her. “Sometimes, the past isn’t recorded accurately. You’d be surprised how beneficial it is to have a window into the true events of the past.”
“Did you go to a school like this to learn how to use your powers?” Joline asked. She was the one student who didn’t look happy to be there.
I knew she was because all the students in attendance had the option to attend or back out. She had agreed to come to the school.
“Unfortunately, there wasn’t a school like this for me when I was your age. That’s one of the reasons I decided to start this program. I wanted other girls like me to have someone to turn to.”
After lunch was served, the girls chatted among themselves. I could tell a lot of them were excited to talk to others with special powers. It seemed like most of them hadn’t met anyone else with magic.
The whole atmosphere was charged with excitement and eagerness. I thought of how different my own childhood would have been if I had someone to teach me about my powers.
After lunch, the girls mingled in the garden. Some of them even started showing off their powers. Joline stood alone in a corner playing with some of the flowers.
“You know, you can mingle with the other students,” I told her, moving to her side. I plucked one of the flowers and held it to my nose, twirling it around as I smelled it.
“They all have incredible powers that can help people. Mine... well, let’s just say manipulating people’s senses and minds isn’t a good way to make friends.”
“You could try. As long as you tell them what your gifts are, maybe you could show them something beautiful, like the ocean or a waterfall.”
Joline’s eyes brightened. “You think that would work?”
“Why not? As long as you have their permission, you might be able to show them things they’ve never experienced. It could change their lives in all kinds of good ways.”
“Good... right... do you think I can be good?”
I thought of my own powers and the prophecy around them.
“Not that long ago, I was told that my own powers were dangerous and that I’d cause a lot of damage with them. I was reminded a lot that my powers themselves aren’t dangerous. It’s how I choose to use them.”
“Is that true?” her face lit up hopefully.
I nodded. “It is true. I promise, your powers aren’t anything to be afraid of, and they don’t decide what kind of person you want to be.”
“Alright, I’ll try.”
Smiling, Joline went to join the other girls. My heart lifted. I hope she took what I said to heart. If I could see that these young women benefited from this program, it would make everything I went through worth it. I felt like I had a unique perspective to offer them.
I chatted with the girls and learned a little more about their backgrounds and their dreams and ambitions.
Just as the afternoon was wrapping up, the ground trembled and a huge split opened in the garden. A crackling, rippling portal opened.
All the girls started screaming.
“Get behind me!” I held my arms out protectively as the girls all hid behind me.
The portal reflected a similar garden back at me and a woman stepped through. It took me a moment to recognize her, only because I never thought I’d see her again.
The alternate Sasha stepped through the portal.
She looked different. Her hair was shorter and she was dressed like a powerful, well-respected mystic. There was also a stunning engagement ring on her finger. Apparently, she had managed to work things out with the Lucas of her realm.
“Sasha?” I gasped as she stepped through the portal.
She smiled brightly and waved. “Hey, long time, no see.” She winked at me.
Breaking out of my daze, I went to her and hugged her. “Yeah. Don’t take this the wrong way, but what are you doing here?”
“I–”
“Whoa! The two of you look exactly alike!” Isabelle said, pointing between the two of us.
“Yes. This is Sasha. She’s... an alternate version of me from another reality,” I explained quickly.
“From another reality?” Felicity gasped. “And you made that big portal all on your own?”
Though it was already fading, there was no denying that it was a big, powerful portal. Even with the orbs, I hadn’t been able to open a portal like that.
Suddenly, all the girls surrounded the alternate Sasha. They pestered her with questions and showered her with adoration and praise.
She smiled widely and answered the questions as best she could.
“What is it like in another reality?”
“Not that different from here, actually. Our realities are pretty similar.”
“You’re really powerful, aren’t you?”
“I’ve trained very diligently to master my powers. Once I did that, I could do some incredible things.”
“Oh... wow!”
“Can you travel to any reality you want?”
“I don’t know. This is the first time I’ve tried, and I only intended to come here.”
“We all have powers too, and we’re going to learn how to use them.”
The alternate Sasha smiled widely. “That’s amazing. I’m glad you’ll have someone to teach you so you don’t have to learn it all on your own.”
“Tell us about your reality, please, please.”
I frowned as the girls fawned all over her. It wasn’t fair of me to blame her. She didn’t know she’d be interrupting an important event. Still, I couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed about her timing.
“Well, not too long ago, there was a dark power unleashed in my reality. If it wasn’t for Sasha over there, my reality wouldn’t have survived.” She motioned to me.
All the girls looked at me again and I smiled. “That’s right. I had to stop a dark ritual from taking over.”
Instead of asking me questions, the girls turned back to the alternate Sasha.
“What kind of ritual?”
“Do you still have to fight against dark magic?”
The questions went on and on. Alternate Sasha gladly answered all their questions and regaled the students with so many stories. She even told them stories I hadn’t heard.
It sounded like a lot had happened in her reality since we last saw each other.
Sighing, I retreated slightly. They were hanging on every word the other Sasha gave them like hungry puppies begging for treats. Her natural charm and charisma had them captivated. I couldn’t deny that she was a good storyteller.
My students were completely enraptured. I felt a little jilted. This was my event, a time to connect with the students and get them excited for their school year. How was I supposed to do that when the alternate Sasha was the center of attention?
She didn’t even know what we were trying to do here.
I knew it wasn’t her fault. It wasn’t like she came here to upstage me or interfere. I doubted she was there telling stories in an attempt to make herself look good.
Still, impatience coiled in my stomach. These girls were young, impressionable, and new to their powers. They needed to focus on the fundamentals, not have stories of grand rituals and battles.
If all went well, none of them would ever have to see that dangerous side of the world.
“Girls, I think we’ve held up the other Sasha enough. She’s here for a reason, and it probably isn’t to answer all your questions.”
I clapped my hands to get their attention. They all looked at me a little annoyed.
“It’s alright, Sasha. I don’t mind answering their questions. It makes me happy to see such curiosity in young, gifted minds.”
The girls laughed and immediately started asking her more questions.
I doubted I’d be able to redirect their attention.
After a while, the palace servants brought dessert to the table. That got the girls’ attention. They rushed over and started eating dessert, chatting amongst themselves.
I grabbed alternate Sasha’s arm and took her aside.
“What is all this?” she asked, nodding to the girls.
“Queen Lena and I have started a school for gifted girls, to teach them about their powers and help them master their gifts.”
“That’s an amazing idea. It is such a great mission, Sasha.”
I arched an eyebrow at her. “Thank you.”
She sighed and shook her head. “I can’t deny, I’m a little jealous that I never had a school like that.”
“I agree.” I nodded. “That’s one of the reasons I decided to participate.”
“I can’t believe you found ten girls with powers.”
I chuckled. “Oh, we found a lot more than that. This is just our first class. The trial run, if you will. Someday, we’ll be able to teach them all, but we need to start small and smooth out all the kinks, first.”
“Well, you seem really happy. That’s good.”
I nodded. “What are you doing here? Are you going to be here long?”
The other Sasha sighed, getting serious. She looked around the garden and when she spoke again, it was in a lower whisper. “I’m not sure how long I’ll be here. I just go where I feel I’m needed.”
My stomach twisted. “You think there’s something we need to worry about in this reality?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know. I just feel like I need to be here. It’s a bit cryptic, but I’ll be here until I can figure out why I got called here.”
“The girls really seem to like you.”
The other Sasha chuckled. “They do. I wasn’t expecting that. I’m sorry to crash your luncheon.”
“Oh, please, it was getting a little boring, anyway.” I couldn’t be mad at her when I knew it wasn’t her fault. I buried my sour feelings and focused on how this could work out.
“How would you feel about being a visiting teacher? You’ve got a lot of experience with magical powers and training. Besides, the girls could benefit from someone they look up to so much.”
“Are you serious? I don’t want to take anything away from you.”
I scoffed. “Look, I’ll be here full-time. I doubt they’ll be happy with me or like me most of the time. I’d be grateful to have a visiting teacher they really connect with.”
“Okay. Yeah, I’ll give it a try. It sounds like it could be fun.”
