Chapter 1075: Chapter 138 : The Blood Moon

*Lucas*

Sasha paced around the nursery while the Blood Moon rose into the night sky. I sat by the bassinet and watched Hunter sleep.

He was so quiet and peaceful, without a care in the world. An infant had no idea what dangers lurked around him.

“Sasha, come here.” I held my arm out to her.

She paused and then came to my side. I pulled her down next to me and nodded to our son. She’d been so stressed for weeks and I didn’t know how to help her. As much as I tried, I hadn’t been able to do or say the right things.

I believed the dangers were out there, but I still wanted to help put her at ease.

“Just look at him sleeping. He’s so peaceful,” I murmured with my lips at Sasha’s ear.

She sighed and leaned against me. “I wish I could make the world safe for him.”

I chuckled. “Sasha, the world will never be completely safe. Whether it is some ancient prophecy or the risk of choking on food, our son is going to face risks every day. You can’t stop that.”

“What if we just wrapped him in bubble wrap and kept him in one room his whole life? I could puree all his food and–”

“Sasha... what kind of life would that be for a child? I understand your desire to protect him, but we can’t control the world. Right now, we just need to be here for our son and for each other. We’ll get through this, just like everything else.”

I saw her eyes glisten as she watched our son. “I love him so much. I can’t stand the thought of anything happening to him.”

I kissed the side of her head. “Me neither. But I also worry about you.”

“I’m doing a lot better, Lucas. I just... want this current threat to be over.”

“And when it is, we will get married and have a big family. How’s that sound?”

She grinned and nodded. “I’d like that. Wait, how big of a family are we talking?”

“Oh, I don’t know, maybe four or five kids.”

“Five!?” She stared at me, her eyes as wide as the moon.

I smirked and shrugged. “What? Is that not enough for you?”

She rolled her eyes. “You’re insane.” She kissed me quickly on the cheek.

“What can I say? I like looking at the future. Have you thought about the wedding at all?”

“I haven’t had time to. All I know is that I want it to be with all our friends and family, but nothing like the wedding that other Sasha planned for her and Donovan.”

I laughed and nodded. “Agreed. Nothing like those big, white bows or anything.”

“I’ve thought about a wedding dress, and I think I want something simple. I know a lot of women want the big princess wedding dress, but that’s just not me.”

“We’ll find the perfect dress. I promise.”

She nodded and rested her head on my shoulder, still watching him. I hugged her against my side and kissed her temple again. Sasha let out a little sigh, and I felt how heavy she was against me. Something was weighing on her mind.

“Sasha, what’s bothering you? I mean, besides the obvious,” I said, nudging her slightly.

“I’m terrified for our son and our future as a family.”

“It’s more than that. What are you thinking about?”

She lifted her head and leaned down, kissing his forehead. “I’ve been thinking about the best solution to keep him safe. This entire realm is full of darkness. Maybe we should take him to the Light Realm.”

I looked at our son and instinctively reached out to touch him. I tightened the swaddling cloth around him as if that could keep him safe and secure from the world.

I hadn’t told Sasha yet that I was appointed to oversee the Dark Realm’s first airport. I hadn’t told her I’d been promoted to Royal Engineer, Head of the Aviation Division. Everything with the baby had taken us by storm, and there hadn’t been time. Xander was giving me the time I needed to adjust to being a father.

I hadn’t even told her that the Dark Realm was building an airport. I wanted to see Sasha and Hunter safe and secure first. If Sasha wanted to leave the Light Realm, I wasn’t going to make her feel guilty by pulling the “dream job” card. I’d tell her when the time was right, but if she wanted to leave, the job wouldn’t be holding me back.

The night passed uneventfully. Sasha was on edge the whole time, but I made sure she stayed close to Hunter and talked to her about our son and future. It helped keep her steady, I could tell.

Finally, as the sun rose, Sasha fed him. While she was holding him in the recliner chair, she fell asleep.

I carefully took him from her, changed Hunter’s diaper, and rocked him back to sleep. Then I covered Sasha with a blanket. She squirmed and pulled the blanket around her.

I made myself a quick meal in the kitchen and changed my clothes before going back to check on Sasha and Hunter. The two of them were still sleeping soundly. I grabbed a book and made myself comfortable in the rocker. The sun was up, but I wasn’t going to leave them alone quite yet.

After a few minutes, Sasha jolted awake. She gasped and pulled the blanket close around her.

“Sasha?”

She looked around wildly, then her eyes settled on me. She relaxed slightly.

“Another dream?” I asked. I set the book aside.

“I don’t remember. Hunter?” She went to the bassinet and checked on the baby.

“Sleeping soundly,” I assured her. I watched her for a moment. She looked a lot less tense than the night before. “Sasha, when did you want to move to the Light Realm?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. As soon as possible, I think. We can’t keep him safe here. But if we went to the Light Realm, we could merge in with a lower-profile pack and go unnoticed.”

“That could work. Any particular packs in mind? I’m not sure we have all the resources in the Light Realm that we have here.”

“What about Oliver?”

“My brother?” I arched a brow.

She nodded. “I’d feel safe with Oliver. We know him and we know his pack. I’m sure Oliver would want to help you.”

“I’m sure he would. Besides, Oliver owes me,” I assured her with a nod. “It doesn’t matter to me what realm we live in as long as we are together.”

I took her hand and squeezed.

“I’m kind of hungry.”

“I’ll make you some breakfast. Stay here with the baby.”

While I made Sasha some bacon and eggs, I thought about what she said about going to the Light Realm. I also thought about what I told her about the world always being risky for our son. That meant both the Light Realm and the Dark Realm.

I brought Sasha something warm to eat. She sat by the bassinet and munched slowly, silently.

“Sasha.”

“Hmm?” She looked up at me.

I sighed. “I know why you want to go to the Light Realm. I’m not sure it is the solution to our problems.”

“Why not? The Light Realm doesn’t have Lycaonians or anyone that would be after us.”

“Not that we know of. Besides, if we go to the Light Realm, the threats against us could just follow us there.”

Sasha frowned slightly. Hunter started to fuss and she picked him up. She nursed him again and then rocked him. He kept his eyes on her but was perfectly content.

“I’m worried that if we go to join Oliver’s pack, the danger would follow us and it would only endanger him and the pack, possibly the entire Light Realm.”

“What other options do we have, Lucas? If we could get in front of all this, we could find a way to resolve it. We can do that in the Light Realm once we feel safe.”

“Or... we could stay in the Dark Realm and get protection from the palace. Xander and Lena are more than capable of providing us with protection while we find a better solution.”

“Do you think we should move into the palace?”

I nodded. “Yes. I think it would be for the best. Our son would be protected all the time, and it would be a lot harder for anyone to get to us. We’d have more resources.”

“Alright... well, if they don’t mind us crashing with them at the palace, then maybe that is a better option.

“I’ll make the arrangements.”

I left her to tend to Hunter and went to the phone. First, I called Xander. He and Lena had no problems with us staying at the palace for a while. Next, I called Brady. He was staying with Phoebe while we settled into life as parents.

“How would you and Phoebe like the mansion to yourselves for a while?”

“Uhh... what is all this about?” Brady asked.

“Sasha, Hunter, and I are going to stay at the palace for a while for protection. I know Phoebe won’t have a dorm room much longer with graduation and everything. You two will need a place to stay.”

“Are you sure you guys want to do this?”

“Yeah, man. The truth is, Sasha and I don’t have the hours in a day to protect that boy. We need round-the-clock help and the palace has that. With their resources, we can get ahead of this.”

“Good idea.”

“I’ll leave the keys for you and Phoebe.”

Sasha and I packed everything we needed for the baby and for ourselves to relocate to the palace. They sent a truck to help with our things and Ian drove us to the palace. The palace guards helped us get settled into a guest suite. It was an easy transition.

Xander stopped by after we put the baby down for a nap. “We’re hosting a special dinner tonight. You two should get ready.”

“Oh... I don’t know,” Sasha argued.

Xander winked. “You’ll want to be there.”

“I don’t know if I want to go, Lucas,” Sasha said, flopping down on the bed. “It’s been a long day.”

I touched her shoulder. “I know. But we should show Xander and Lena some appreciation. They are doing us a huge favor.”

“I know... I just don’t want to leave Hunter.”

“This is the palace. I’m sure Lena had people to look after the baby. We have nothing to worry about.”

At my request, Lena sent a trusted nanny to look after Hunter while Sasha and I went to the special dinner Xander had hosted for us. When we showed up, there were several prominent members of the engineering community.

“There he is!” Xander held up a champagne glass as I walked in. “The new Royal Engineer in charge of our great new project, the Dark Realm’s first airport.”

There was a round of applause, but as my eyes landed on Sasha, her expression reminded me that I’d forgotten to tell her about this assignment.
