Chapter 1043: Chapter 106 : Hope
*Lucas*
Whimpering.
I sat bolt upright and reached for Sasha. Tears glistened on her cheeks in the moonlight. I touched her shoulder and she cringed away from me, sniffling and whimpering again.
“Sasha,” I whispered. “Wake up.”
She kept crying. I shook her and tightened my grip on her shoulder.
“Sasha!”
Her eyes snapped open and she gasped. Fresh tears pooled and she threw herself into my arms. I held her against my chest and stroked my fingers through her silky hair.
“What is it, my love?”
She sniffled and her lower lip quivered. “I had this strange dream. Lucas, it was so real.”
I rubbed her back, her slight form so warm and pliable against me. “Tell me what happened.”
I listened as she recounted her dream. I understood why her subconscious would conjure a dream like that. Sasha was missing her baby and needed hope that we’d get our bodies back.
She needed to think that someone out there was taking care of her baby and doing whatever they could to solve the problem.
“I think it was a vision. I think it really happened.”
I sighed and kissed the top of her head. “I don’t know, Sasha. It sounds like a wish-fulfillment dream. I understand why you’d have a dream like that.”
She pulled away from me and narrowed her sparkling eyes. “It wouldn’t be the first time I had some kind of vision like that!”
“I know, but you’ve always had your powers when you had those visions. You don’t have your powers in this body or reality. I think it was just a dream.”
“What if it wasn’t my vision?” she countered.
I arched an eyebrow.
She huffed and crossed her arms. “What if the vision came from the Sasha in the other reality? I think she was trying to send me a message, like she wanted me to know our baby is okay and that she’s working to fix the problem.”
I sighed again and took her into my arms. I didn’t like how she looked at me, like she thought I wasn’t supporting her.
I knew that she was upset with me because I wasn’t showing my emotions over our missing baby. I wanted to be strong for her and support her. Truthfully, I was scared to death we’d never get our baby back, but she didn’t need to see that fear. She needed me to be her rock.
“I’m not going to rule out the possibility, but if you remember, you didn’t have your powers in that reality either.”
“But she’s in my body. My real body has access to powers.”
“Why don’t we go visit with Lena and ask what she thinks?” I suggested.
Sasha was silent for a moment. Her fingers plucked at the sheet around us. I felt the steady rise and fall of her breast against my bare chest. Unconsciously, my fingers ran down her smooth, soft sides, her warm skin delicious against my fingertips.
“You think Lena has answers?” She tipped her head up to look at me.
I smiled. “If nothing else, she’ll at least be able to tell us if it is possible.”
Sasha nodded and rested her head against my shoulder.
“Sleep now. I’ll make sure you aren’t plagued by any more bad dreams.”
She sighed and snuggled down on her pillows. I kept my arms around her and stayed up, watching her drift back to sleep. I forced myself to stay awake long after her eyes closed and her breathing became heavy. She looked so peaceful.
I waited until I was sure her nightmares wouldn’t come back.
Leaning down, I kissed her powder-soft cheek and I snuggled against her, holding her as I drifted back to sleep.
How many more nightmares would she need to suffer?

“What happened to Chuck?” I asked when a new foreman greeted me at my work-study project.
“Reassigned,” the new guy grunted.
“Okay. He wanted me to learn about structural engineering. I can pick up where we left off yesterday.”
The new foreman looked up from his clipboard for the first time and cocked his head at me.
“Who are you?”
“I’m the intern. This is my university work-study program.”
“Huh. Intern. Okay, make copies of these.” He thrust a stack of papers into my hands.
“Umm... okay....”
The guy was already back to staring at his clipboard, and I was all but forgotten.
I trudged to the trailer office and started making copies of all his notes. Was this going to be my internship now?
With Chuck, I was looking forward to this. He was friendly and wanted to help me learn.
The new guy didn’t even give me his name.
I neatly stacked all the copies on the foreman’s desk and headed to the site again. He was standing at the base of the scaffolding, watching large metal beams being lifted into place.
“I made those copies. If you want, I can grab a hard hat and help with some of the calculations.”
The foreman looked at me from under his hard hat. His scraggly, greasy beard covered his mouth, but I was pretty sure he was frowning. He looked at me for a long time like he couldn’t remember who I was.
“Oh, intern. We’re due for a lunch break soon. Get everyone’s coffee order and go downtown to pick it up.”
My jaw slacked. Was he giving me orders? I was supposed to be learning about architecture and engineering, not running office errands.
Before I could protest, he turned back and started shouting at the workers.
Sighing, I got a pen and pad of paper. I ran around to all the workers and got their coffee order.
Most of them were friendly enough, but none of them mentioned anything about how I could deal with the foreman. None of them treated me as anything but a glorified office assistant.
This was not what a work-study program was supposed to be.
According to my advisor, it was the only one in my field. I’d just have to suck it up until graduation and see if I could learn anything from just hanging around and listening to their chatter.
I headed downtown to the coffee shop and got everyone’s orders. With coffees stacked high, I headed back to the site. I slowed down and dragged my feet. If they wanted to send me out to run errands, I was going to take my time.
I thought of the other Sasha and my dream. It felt like more than a dream. I understood why Lucas was hesitant to think it wasn’t anything more, but I was convinced.
A dream didn’t always make sense, and they were hardly ever clear like that. If she had her powers, there was no reason to believe she couldn’t use those powers to enter my dreams.
They were called “dream dancer” abilities, weren’t they?
I got back to the site and handed everyone their coffees. The foreman didn’t even look at me. I grabbed my own latte and headed to the trailer office. If he wasn’t going to give me an assignment, I’d do what I could to learn on my own.
As I organized the office, my thoughts went back to that vision. It was hard not to feel hopeful that there was another version of me, with powers, keeping my baby safe and helping to solve the problem.
I hadn’t thought about how much she’d want her own body back, too. My only focus was on getting my baby back.
Soon, very soon, I’d have my body and baby back.
I read over all the blueprints in the office, along with Chuck’s notes and the new foreman’s notes. It gave me something to do, but I was still bored hours before my work-study time was up.
“Intern, you in here?” the foreman poked his head in.
“Yes. I was just studying blueprints.”
“Go to the library in town. I need these books.” He tossed a small list on the desk and walked out again.
“Of course, I’m here as your assistant,” I grumbled.
I pocketed the list and headed back into town. There was a note on the list about permitting information, too.
With the help of a librarian, I got all the books and pamphlets on the foreman’s list. She even put them in a bag for me so I didn’t have to carry them in a stack.
“Sasha?” a familiar voice asked as I walked down the library steps.
“Jennie?” I turned to see her rushing toward me.
“When did you get back? I heard....”
“That I was in a magical coma for a few months?”
Jennie nodded. “Yeah. I’m glad to see you up and around again.”
“I’m trying to put my life back together. It’s been... an adjustment.” I sighed and looked down. It seemed impossible to go through a day without being reminded that I was missing something important–my son, my baby boy.
“Are you okay? You look sad,” Jennie said. She put a hand on my shoulder.
“There’s just a lot going on. Transporting back to our reality came with some... consequences.”
Jennie frowned and her brow creased. She looked concerned.
“What happened?”
“Well, we brought bodies from another reality back and our current bodies are out there, somewhere....”
“That’s unusual.”
“It’s my fault. I wasn’t completely in control of my powers.”
Jennie smiled warmly. “You’re a dream dancer. You can fix anything when you put your mind to it.
I nodded somberly.
“Okay, now you’re worrying me. Come on, what’s got you so down?”
I looked into her eyes. She was so kind and concerned. I knew she wanted to help, but I didn’t think there was anything anyone could do.
“I’m afraid I’m not a dream dancer anymore.” I shrugged.
“What?! How is that possible?” Jennie’s eyes widened in surprise and she pulled back.
“My powers were taken from me in another reality, and I brought that powerless body back here.”
“Hmm.” Jennie frowned and shook her head. “That is so strange and completely unfair!”
“Tell me about it.” I sighed and slung the books over my shoulder. “I should get back to my work-study. The foreman is waiting on these books.”
I took a few steps before Jennie caught up to me again.
“You know, my mom might be able to help with your missing powers.”
“Really?!” I stopped dead and turned to her, my heart swelling. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought to ask Jennie and her mother. They were the only other witches, good witches, that I knew.
“I can’t promise anything, but she knows a lot of stuff about realities and transferring powers. I bet if you asked, she’d have some information.”
“Thank you. I’d really appreciate that.”
“Good. Come by tonight. You might as well bring Lucas, too, since he’s also in the wrong body.”
“Okay, great, see you tonight.” I left Jennie with a new skip in my step.
Maybe there was hope in this reality, too.
