Chapter 285: Chapter 285: Terminate the Lease

Yang Jia and Chen Fengzhou received this gift and were especially happy because they made their living through writing, and now the power restriction was so tight. It was inconvenient for both of them to rely on candles, but with the charger, writing became convenient, to say the least, and their laptops could be used again.

Afterward, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went to Lu Jianguo’s place. Lu Jianguo wasn’t short of electricity, but he was always working overtime and not returning home, not eating properly. Seeing that it was close to noon, Gu Pan took out some pork buns from her "Space," packed them, and took the opportunity to deliver them to remind him to rest. She told him if he wasn’t working late tonight to come to their house for dinner, so they could properly discuss the trip to the main base.

When they reached Lu Jianguo’s office, he happened to be in.

Seeing the two of them, Lu Jianguo was so pleased he stood up: "You just came back yesterday, and you’re already cooking and bringing me food? You should rest properly yourself."

Lu Ruisheng placed the buns on Lu Jianguo’s desk: "We weren’t that tired from the trip and had a good rest, so don’t worry about us."

After finishing his words, he looked at the dark circles under Lu Jianguo’s eyes: "Did you work overtime and stay up late again yesterday? The doctor said you need to rest more. You’re not young anymore and should pay more attention to your health."

Hearing his son’s concern, Lu Jianguo couldn’t stop smiling: "I know, I know, I’ll definitely remember what you said and pay attention in the future."

Then, he invited them to sit on the sofa: "I’m not busy right now, and it’s almost noon. I was just about to go get some food from the cafeteria. Let’s eat together."

Gu Pan didn’t want to eat the cafeteria food, so she hurriedly took out another bag of buns from her bag: "I thought I’d send this to Uncle Li later, so let’s eat these for lunch today. We can make some more tomorrow and deliver them then."

These were indeed intended to be delivered to Li Shukang and Chief Qin later, but since they decided to eat them now, they figured they could simply bring more tomorrow.

Lu Jianguo looked at the buns: "We can’t eat so many. How about I take two each to them?"

At this time, everyone’s appetite was less; hunger was all too familiar, and stomachs were only so big.

Mainly, Lu Jianguo was afraid the two would smell the scent, not get any, and then grumble behind his back for days on end, a feeling more terrible than having two ghosts following him around.

Lu Ruisheng said: "Then I’ll go, and after these busy days, Dad, invite Uncle Li and Uncle Qin to come over to our house for dinner."

Lu Jianguo nodded with a smile: "Alright, you go."

Lu Ruisheng took the buns and left, while Gu Pan took out a box of soup, some side dishes, a few small meat pastries, some mung bean cakes, and other little snacks—all from her "Space," using the bag as a decoy so that everyone could eat their fill.

Soon, the table was full of food.

Lu Jianguo looked at all this: "Kid, how do you always have so much stuff in that bag?"

Gu Pan was very matter-of-fact: "We usually carry more with us, just in case a sudden disaster strikes and we get trapped somewhere. Having food means there’s nothing to fear. We got used to doing this when we were outside."

Hearing this, Lu Jianguo thought their habit was very sound: "You’re right, it’s a good habit, and I need to learn it too."

Gu Pan served Lu Jianguo a bowl of soup: "Dad, have some soup."

Lu Jianguo took a sip: "You two are clever. Before, you set up a greenhouse in your courtyard and dried a lot of vegetables. Now there’s no shortage. The base relies on lamps to grow veggies, but the yield is low. The new vegetables provided by the main base take ten days to mature. Now without sunlight, if people don’t get the vitamins, they can’t hold up."

Gu Pan said: "So, how do we solve the issue of getting enough light during this period? Two hours of power a day isn’t enough for our body’s needs."

"The base has rushed to produce some simulated sunlight LED lamps, but there aren’t enough, so they’re still in production. The materials needed are also being sought after," Lu Jianguo said, feeling helpless.

Gu Pan said: "If it doesn’t work out, set up these lamps as irradiation points in public places so that base inhabitants can queue up and get exposed for certain times each day."

Lu Jianguo nodded: "We already had this idea, but it needs further discussion at this afternoon’s meeting. It seems simple, but there are many practical troubles."

Gu Pan understood this; after all, it was a large base with many people.

They were better off, having Chen Shaonan, who could solve these issues on their own. When the time came, they’d set up some at home; with a generator, they didn’t need to go out and squeeze with others under the lamps.

While they were discussing, Lu Ruisheng returned, and they discussed the issue together.

However, what relieved Lu Jianguo was that his son and daughter-in-law had everything in their home, so there was no need to worry about them.

After eating, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng took the food containers and said goodbye to Lu Jianguo, reminding him to come over for dinner in the evening and not to stay up late working.

Lu Jianguo smilingly agreed and saw them down the stairs.

Along the way, whenever he encountered colleagues, Lu Jianguo couldn’t help but show off his beloved son.

After leaving Lu Jianguo, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went to the housing center, found Chen Lu, and decided to return one of the houses.

They were more inclined to live in the villa now, and after another outing, they planned to secure a villa for Chen Shaonan’s family as well. The more dangerous the future seemed, the more they needed to stay together to resist external forces better.

Therefore, they kept two units in the apartment building—one across from Yang Jia and the one the Chen Family was currently living in. The third one that was completely empty, they decided to return. Two units were enough for their transitional needs.

Given the increasing number of people arriving at the base, the housing was getting tight, and they didn’t feel right occupying too much space.

Moreover, it was time to visit their friend Chen Lu and to bring her some freeze-dried vegetables. Gu Pan had a lot in her "Space," but for ordinary people, this item was life-saving during the polar night.

When they arrived at the housing center, the lighting inside was dim, as energy was conserved and lights were turned off when there were fewer people around.

They found Chen Lu.

Chen Lu ran over to greet them excitedly when she saw them: "Panpan, you and your husband are back! I went to your house the other day, and you weren’t there; the neighbor told me you’d gone out of town."

Gu Pan nodded: "Yeah, we had some business to take care of, and it took a bit longer. We were gone for over a month before returning."

"Were things smooth on your trip? Is everything all right?" Chen Lu asked with concern.

"Yep, all good. We traveled with the base convoy, so it was safe," said Gu Pan, handing a bag to Chen Lu. "Look at it when you get home, keep it safe."

Chen Lu guessed it was supplies and hugged the bag tightly: "Thank you."

Gu Pan shook her head: "We’re friends. There’s no need for courtesy. Actually, we came today to return a house, the one in the apartment building. With more people coming in, it’s not right for us to take up too much space."

Chen Lu said: "There’s still enough housing available. If you need it, there’s no rush to return it."

"That room isn’t needed, so we’ll return it," said Gu Pan, handing over the rental contract for the house they wanted to return to Chen Lu.
