Chapter 278: Chapter 278: The Old Man’s Gift

Lu Jianshe hadn’t expected Gu Pan to have so many secrets, but he was grateful to him. He didn’t ask further, choosing instead to trust them.

She took the paper and said to Lu Jianshe, "Second Uncle guessed right, I have a secret, the kind that can’t be told, but don’t worry. If a greater disaster comes one day, we will come find you and Second Aunt and take you with us."

She didn’t say more, but she confirmed to Lu Jianshe that his guess was correct, giving him a bit of peace of mind.

Lu Jianshe didn’t inquire further and simply smiled, "Alright, then I’m at ease."

Lu Ruisheng told Lu Jianshe, "Second Uncle, you and Second Aunt must take good care of yourselves. We will definitely come back."

Lu Jianshe responded, "Hmm, before you leave, enjoy these few days to the fullest."

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng acknowledged, and then they shared some things about Lu Ruiming with Lu Jianshe.

Lu Jianshe hadn’t expected it, but now that Lu Ruiming was no longer connected to them, he didn’t want to comment further.

The next day, Lun Wanli returned. He seemed unwell, so Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng didn’t disturb his rest, letting him rest well in his room.

However, that evening, Lun Wanli still called them over.

Facing Lu Ruisheng, Lun Wanli genuinely felt guilty: "Shengsheng, your grandfather isn’t a qualified elder. I’ve let you suffer and failed in managing the family. Please, when you go back, apologize to your dad for me."

Lu Ruisheng didn’t say anything courteous, "Alright, I think my dad has been waiting for this apology."

Lun Wanli sighed deeply, "I know you hold resentment towards me, and I don’t ask for forgiveness, child. Just take good care of yourselves from now on. You’re capable, and I have no right to keep you by my side, but I truly hope you do well."

Lu Ruisheng replied, "We will be alright. My dad has suffered too much these past years, so I will also fulfill my duties as a son to make his life better."

Lun Wanli nodded, "Yes, yes, you should be filial to your dad. He hasn’t remarried all these years just waiting for you to come back. His heart is only filled with thoughts of you."

Hearing this made Lu Ruisheng’s eyes redden. Lu Jianguo had indeed had a tough time; he was a qualified father, just with an unfortunate fate of not having a good father himself.

Lun Wanli patted Lu Ruisheng’s shoulder, "Grandpa knows that those fertilized eggs related to your Second Uncle have something to do with you. Don’t worry, nobody else will know about it. I really didn’t expect you to have such great abilities, so I’m relieved no matter where you go."

After that, he took out a paper and handed it to Lu Ruisheng, "This is a special pass. If one day, the main base relocates, use these coordinates to go to this place. With this, you can go in. This is the last thing grandpa can do for you."

Gu Pan looked at the paper in Lu Ruisheng’s hand, stamped with many seals and signatures, labelled "Mount Everest Pass."

She hadn’t expected that the very thing she and Lu Ruisheng were so determined to obtain, as they were leaving the main base, would not just be one, but several—including not just coordinates, but also passes.

Lu Ruisheng accepted the pass and thanked Lun Wanli, "Thank you, Grandpa. We will definitely survive."

Lun Wanli nodded, "Enjoy yourselves these next two days, and if possible, come visit me when you have time."

Lu Ruisheng didn’t refuse, "Alright, if we have time, we’ll come."

Lun Wanli smiled warmly at Lu Ruisheng. What a fine young man he was, his only grandson, whom he could never see enough of, "By the way, don’t forget to leave me a few photos of the two of you. I long to look at them."

Gu Pan agreed, "Sure, I’ll bring them to Grandpa later."

"Alright, I’m tired. You go have fun," said Lun Wanli, truly tired, his vigor not what it once was after his illness.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng left Lun Wanli’s room.

Back in their room, they studied the pass, which had only their two names. If needed later, they would not be using just two names, so they would have to figure something out then.

Of course, they would discuss that later; there was no need to think so far ahead for now.

The nights had been growing longer these past few days, and polar night was approaching.

Lu Jianshe had already arranged the time for Gu Pan and the others to return. The military was soon to deliver to No.7 Base a new type of vegetable recently developed by the main base, a plant similar to a mix of mushrooms and algae, which required a lot of water and ventilation but no sunlight. It didn’t taste very appealing or flavorful, but it was beneficial for replenishing vitamins and minerals and staving off hunger.

Soon, the day of their departure arrived, and Lu Jianshe and Su Qing had prepared two large boxes of supplies. Although they knew Gu Pan and the others were well-stocked, it was their way of showing care.

And Su Mu had prepared a bag of books, information on various latest weapons, urging them to study them as they might need them someday.

Lun Wanli did not come to see them off, saying he preferred not to watch such departures, and had some supplies sent to them to take back instead.

When parting, Lu Ruisheng gave Lu Jianshe a paper detailing problems that might occur during the polar night and their strategies to handle them, such as issues that could arise from being out of sunlight for extended periods, physically and mentally. This could greatly help Lu Jianshe and the base.

Lu Jianshe also shared some life-saving tips with Lu Ruisheng.

Despite the deep reluctance, they still had to part ways.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, accompanied by their Second Uncle and others, boarded the vehicle and left the main base.

Once outside the base, Gu Pan looked back at the increasingly distant main base with complex feelings in her heart.

Now, there were only three or four hours of daylight each day, and within two days, they would be completely engulfed in darkness.

Because during her arrival, Gu Pan had noted many important places in her notebook, they split from the main troop two days later to visit those places.

The now more cautious main troop no longer passed through the city centers, so they were safer as well.

However, because Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had helped the troop safely return to the main base previously, everyone truly didn’t want to part ways with them.

But there was no choice, they could only let them go for a while to handle their matters and then come back to join them later.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng thought the same. After wrapping up, they would reunite with the main troop and return to No.7 Base together.

They had left signal flares with the main troop; they weren’t traveling far, just off the main road to gather resources. Should anything happen, the flares would allow them to come to assist at a moment’s notice.

After splitting up, the polar night had fully descended.

The two traveled in an off-road vehicle, which made it more convenient.

Their first stop was a science museum, which was fairly well-preserved as scavengers often overlooked it for lacking food, weapons, and electricity-dependent items.

But the artifacts here were irreplaceable for future recovery efforts, including intelligent robots and steam-engined vehicles.
