Chapter 255: After Grandma and Grandpa
Chapter 255: Chapter 255: After Grandma and Grandpa
The milk tea was ready soon, and the two of them took their milk teas back to the car.
Lu Ruisheng closed his eyes to rest, while Lu Ruiming couldn’t get out of the car but was anxiously looking forward to seeing his grandmother. Yet he didn’t dare to rush them, so he just had to endure. He finally breathed a sigh of relief when Su Qing and Gu Pan returned.
The closer he got to the base, the more nervous he became, for fear that even the slightest problem would prevent him from seeing his grandmother. He was well aware that even though his grandfather was also a close relative, his special bond with his grandmother Huang Suzhen was unique. Unlike his relationship with his grandfather Lu Wanli, he was his grandmother’s only one; so he longed to see her even more.
Su Qing drove at a moderate pace, talking to Gu Pan and the others about some of the things related to the base, explaining that the area they were in now was the military family residential area.
As they passed a two-story building, Su Qing said to Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan, "Shengsheng, Panpan, remember, this one is our home."
She certainly didn’t think Old Master Lu’s place was her home. The home she shared with her husband was also obtained through her own efforts. Both held important positions in the military, neither of them through connections. Moreover, her own brother was an arms designer, a very important person on the base, so she had no need to rely on Old Master Lu for anything.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng responded and made a mental note of the house number and landmarks at the entrance, considering this place their home too.
But Lu Ruiming felt differently. On one hand, Su Qing completely ignored him, and on the other hand, he didn’t think he had any connection to this place. His grandfather was an important official, and he preferred living with his grandfather and grandmother, where conditions would be better. He had never thought about returning to No.7 Base. His mother was great, but she had found new love, and he wanted to let her be happy. After all, she was young and wanted male companionship; he wouldn’t force her and respected her wishes. However, she should also respect him. The General Base, beside Old Master Lu, was where he could truly develop.
Zhang Huishu, of course, knew nothing of this, and if she did, she would probably be disappointed and heartbroken. Her son, whom she protected so carefully, could cut contact with her at any time.
Then Su Qing pointed out another house, a few buildings away: "This is my eldest brother Su Chen’s home. If you have any urgent matters and can’t find me, come here, and they will protect you."
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng understood that this was Second Aunt’s care for them, considering every little detail for their safety.
They thanked Su Qing and assured her they would remember.
Lu Ruiming’s agitation grew. He really hated seeing the three of them acting like a loving family. Wasn’t he a person too?
Finally, they stopped in front of a courtyard belonging to a three-story building. If Lu Ruiming wasn’t mistaken, this was Old Master Lu’s house.
As soon as the car came to a halt, an elderly couple came out.
Old Master Lu Wanli, in his seventies, appeared healthy with salt-and-pepper hair but a lively spirit.
Old Madam Huang Suzhen, barely into her sixties, wore a dark green cheongsam with fair skin that conveyed her wealth.
Upon seeing Huang Suzhen, Lu Ruiming didn’t wait for anyone else to speak. Using his crutches, he hurried towards her: "Grandma."
When Huang Suzhen heard the voice of her cherished grandson, tears immediately fell: "My dearest grandson, Grandma has missed you so much."
The emotional embrace and cries of the grandson and grandmother were extremely touching, disregarding the presence of anyone else.
The situation was somewhat awkward for Gu Pan and the others.
Old Master Lu Wanli frowned but couldn’t bring himself to interrupt them.
Taking two steps forward, he approached Lu Ruisheng: "You must be Shengsheng?" His resemblance to his eldest son in his youth was unmistakable, not just in appearance but also in presence, that cool and collected aura.
Lu Ruisheng greeted Lu Wanli: "Grandfather, I am Lu Ruisheng."
Gu Pan also stepped forward and greeted: "Hello Grandfather, I’m Gu Pan, Lu Ruisheng’s wife."
Lu Wanli looked at his grandson and granddaughter-in-law before him. They were more like his own descendants—calm and dignified. He favored a grandson like this one, unlike Lu Ruiming, who hadn’t seemed to achieve anything notable over the years.
What truly irked Lu Wanli was that six years ago, he had wished for Lu Ruiming to join the Jingdu Military Academy, but Zhang Huishu was adamant about sending Lu Ruiming to study abroad in the Beautiful Country. Lu Wanli couldn’t understand what the Beautiful Country had that Huaxia Country did not. Despite their objections, his daughter-in-law stubbornly proceeded with her plan to send Lu Ruiming to the Beautiful Country, a decision that had long bothered him.
Lu Wanli stepped forward and patted Lu Ruisheng on the arm: "Good lad, it’s great you’re back. Come inside, let’s talk inside."
Tears welled up in his eyes as well. After all, this was his first grandson—how could he not have missed him?
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, carrying gift boxes, followed Lu Wanli and Su Qing into the house.
Meanwhile, Huang Suzhen and Lu Ruiming were still embracing at the entrance, expressing pent-up longing. They paid no attention to others, nor did the others mind them.
After entering the house, Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan placed the boxes on the coffee table.
Lu Ruisheng told Lu Wanli: "Grandfather, we heard from our father and Second Uncle that you enjoy drinking, so we brought you some. But with age, it’s important to control the amount since drinking too much can take a toll on your health."
Such concerns might not be entirely genuine, but their current aim was to make Old Master Lu realize the difference between a direct grandson and a great-grandson. Once Old Master Lu understood completely, they would return home. Did they really expect to show genuine filial piety to this confused old man? Dream on.
Of course, these words did have an impact on Lu Wanli, who nodded happily: "Good, good. I’ll listen to Shengsheng and drink less."
Gu Pan added: "We also heard Grandfather likes jade, and it just so happened we obtained some, so we brought a few pieces for you. We hope Grandfather likes them."
Lu Wanli was even more delighted: "It’s rare for you to be so thoughtful. Good, good. All these years, I admit I have neglected you and haven’t given anything in return. And now, you’ve gone to such lengths for this old man. I am truly ashamed."
Lu Ruisheng replied: "We really can’t accept such words, Grandfather. The incident when I was lost isn’t your fault."
Suddenly, Lu Wanli’s heart tightened. He was not unaware of his elder and younger sons’ sentiments. Although he felt his daughter-in-law couldn’t be that bad, his sons were not fools; their persistence must have had some reason. When he was younger, he tended to believe his daughter-in-law, but as he aged, the intimacy between them lessened, even sleeping in separate rooms, and his thoughts had begun to change.
But he still hoped for harmony in the family. Now that the children had come back, with both grandsons by his side, he was more hopeful about the future.
Moreover, in times of apocalypse, old grievances could be set aside; nothing was more important than the family being together.
Seeing Lu Wanli silent, Su Qing spoke up: "Dad, everyone used to say Shengsheng resembles Big Brother, resembles Jianshe. But looking at him now, he resembles you even more. Indeed, a direct grandson is different."
