Chapter 253 Individual Ability
Chapter 253: Chapter 253 Individual Ability
Following that, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng quickly changed buildings to avoid exposing their position.
At the new location, they fired three rocket launchers, blowing up the building where the enemy’s command center might be and any potential sniper positions.
Afterwards, they continued to change locations and kept on bombing, as they couldn’t afford to worry about wasting ammunition because it was all about staying alive.
The first rocket launcher might have been within the enemy’s expectations, but the second and third threw them into disarray. After the collapse of the commander’s building, the deputy commander was quickly blown to pieces. The snipers were killed or blinded, completely losing their ability to retaliate.
They couldn’t fathom how anyone could carry a mortar and so many shells, mirrors, and still move so fast.
Then, the two of them utilized the Space to hide and their advantage to completely disorient the enemy.
Seeing the right moment, Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan took up a position of great advantage, and then Lu Ruisheng picked up a walkie-talkie to command the soldiers below to counterattack.
With the enemy’s command gone and the snipers eliminated, and with Lu Ruisheng commanding from the optimal position, they quickly gained the upper hand.
An hour later, the enemy began to retreat.
Lu Ruisheng didn’t let his people pursue but instead organized everyone to quickly get into the vehicles and hit the road. The bodies of the fallen comrades were also loaded onto the vehicles, as it was unclear whether the enemy had reinforcements so they could not afford to linger in battle.
During this time, Gu Pan had stored the unused weapons into the Space. Under normal circumstances, they would not have been able to carry all their weapons; they had to retreat quickly, so whatever was left in the Space was considered abandoned, and taking it for themselves was perfectly justifiable and unproblematic.
Lu Ruisheng organized the team to evacuate out of the city, while preparing for another possible battle on the way.
Once they were out of the city and reached the previously designated rest area, they stopped the vehicles, and only then did everyone breathe a sigh of relief.
The medics started to dress the wounds of the injured, beginning with the deputy team leader who was seriously hurt.
Lu Jianshe also had a minor arm injury, but Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan didn’t need any help from others, going over to assist Second Uncle with his wound dressing.
Just as they finished bandaging, Xiao Fang hurried over and whispered to Gu Pan, "Sister, our hemostatic agents don’t seem to work well, maybe they are expired, the deputy team leader is in bad shape, do you have any solution?"
For some reason, Xiao Fang felt that Gu Pan was very reliable, as if there were no problems she couldn’t solve.
Gu Pan nodded and pulled out a first-aid kit from her backpack, "Try this for the medic."
Xiao Fang happily took the first-aid kit and ran off.
Lu Jianshe looked at the two of them, "How did you manage to run so fast with those rocket launchers?"
Lu Ruisheng replied, "Second Uncle, we used a rope-and-pulley system to move weapons up and down. Having worked together long enough, we’ve developed a good rhythm and save a lot of time."
Gu Pan quickly took out various tools from her backpack for Lu Jianshe to see.
Lu Jianshe looked at the large backpack and then at the weight of the metal, he sighed, "The apocalypse has turned a fine young lady into a strongwoman."
Gu Pan scratched her head, "There’s no other way, Second Uncle, don’t worry too much. Rest up for a bit."
Though Lu Jianshe couldn’t comprehend everything, he knew better than to ask too many questions.
Once the deputy team leader’s injuries were stabilized, Lu Jianshe led the team to continue driving for another two hours before stopping to set up camp.
Later, Lu Jianshe and the deputy team leader discussed that they couldn’t pass through the city center anymore. Though it was closer, it was too dangerous. In open terrain, they wouldn’t be as passive as they were today. The vehicles were stocked with various weapons like mortars, they were ready for combat, and had covers; whereas today, in the midst of buildings, they were completely exposed to enemy sight. If not for Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan, they would have all been doomed today.
Afterwards, they cremated their fallen comrades and buried them, which was the last thing they could do for them.
That night, nobody slept peacefully, the day’s battle had left them deeply shaken, almost losing their lives in that city.
Over the next two days, as they got closer to the base, they felt a bit more relieved and hurried along the road, eager to return to the base.
Finally, amidst everyone’s longing, they saw the flag of the main base.
The main base was devoid of any surrounding cities as well, and it was situated at the foot of a mountain, perhaps a hard requirement during its selection. Although they didn’t understand it, there surely was a reason.
The guard here was even stricter, with guards on the city walls holding guns, offering a greater sense of security than No.7 Base.
There weren’t many vagrants outside the base. Those who couldn’t enter temporarily were settled in an eastern shantytown. Without identification, the difficulties of getting into the main base were even greater, and even some people with supplies, but not abundant ones, could not enter.
The convoy arrived at the entrance of the main base, where Lu Jianshe led Lu Ruiming down from the vehicle, then called for Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng to also disembark to handle the necessary procedures for entry.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng got out of the vehicle and joined Lu Jianshe.
Lu Jianshe said to them, "Hand over your ID cards and the residency permits from No.7 Base to the staff for inspection."
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng always carried these documents with them, so they immediately took them out and handed them over.
As they were brought back by Lu Jianshe, the inspectors didn’t have much suspicion. After confirming the documents were genuine, they returned them to Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng.
The deputy team leader also had the mission documentation verified, then someone searched the vehicles and inspected their belongings.
Knowing that soldiers had perished, the usual banter and laughter were gone, and the atmosphere was more solemn and mournful.
After the inspection was completed, they were quickly allowed to pass through, and Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng returned to their original vehicle.
Upon entering the main base, they realized how much smaller No.7 Base really was in comparison. The main base indeed had the grandeur fitting of its name. Past the gates, there were all buildings, no bungalows, and of course, they were only five to six stories high. Installing elevators was not convenient and would waste resources.
But the spacing between buildings and the greenery were all better than No.7 Base. Although the green belts lacked greenery, they must have been reserved during construction.
In the distance, they could see factories on both sides, all of them in operation, some with thick smoke, and many vehicles coming and going. This side felt more like a modern city, while No.7 Base resembled a town from the 1990s, giving a totally different impression.
The main base also had many high walls, presumably surrounding military or Huaxia’s confidential areas, which piqued curiosity.
The roads were busy, of course, bicycles were the most popular here, but there were also quite a few bus stops. Upon entering, they saw public buses, presumably far more than in No.7 Base, which only had a ring bus service that would take ages to see a single bus.
But the area of No.7 Base wasn’t as large, so riding a bicycle was also feasible.
Because of this battle, Xiao Fang had even more respect for Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng and eagerly introduced the surrounding buildings to them.
