Chapter 354: A Name
A hospital was the last place that anyone expected to find two women seated together, plotting vengeance. After all, when people were in the hospital. Either they were sick, injured, or they were visiting friends or family who were feeling unwell, or who had been hurt. Those were the usual things that people did in hospitals.
But plotting vengeance was exactly what Jane Molson and Cassandra Haven were doing.
Someone who had never been in their situation would have mistaken them, not devoting a hundred percent of their time in the hospital to their children. To mean that they did not care. But it was quite the opposite.
The reason that Cassandra and Jane were plotting. Instead of staying by their children’s sides was a good one. Someone had been responsible for their children’s condition. Before they could devote all of their attention to Derek and Emily. They had to find the culprit, otherwise they risked the same thing happening over and over again. And who knew, the next time their children might not be lucky enough to survive.
Cassandra could not let that happen, and Jane was of the same mind as her. Whoever had come after their children was like a disease. And by having Derek and Emily in hospital, it was similar to them treating the symptoms. They had to go for the root cause, otherwise history would repeat itself.
"If whoever did this really is the same attacker from 20 years ago, why wait so long?" Jane asked.
"Why lay low for two decades and just decide to attack again, out of the blue?" It was a good question. And after thinking on it for a few seconds, Cassandra believed that she had an answer. Looking over at Jane, she addressed the other woman.
"Is your Emily the type to let things go?" Jane scoffed at that, shaking her head.
"Never. If something is bothering her, Emily will keep digging, and digging until she gets to the bottom of things," The answer was exactly as she had expected.
"My Derek is the same way too. The only thing that I can think of that has changed in the last twenty years, is that we finally told them the truth. Then we expected them to just let sleeping dogs lie. Do you really think that they did not do some digging of their own?" Jane’s eyes widened in realization and she stared at Cassandra.
"They must have started looking into the case again, and whatever they found, it was enough to make the killer uneasy," Cassandra told the other woman. Then she turned back to her son. Running her fingers over the bruise that looped around his wrist.
She wanted to be angry at him for doing something so dangerous. But at the same time, she was incredibly proud. He had been brave enough to face something that Cassandra had not even wanted to look at for twenty years.
"What do you think they-" Jane cut herself off when two nurses came in.
They moved off to the side, letting them work. Once the nurses left, she and Jane returned to their children’s bedsides and resumed their conversation. But only after Cassandra took a few seconds to check on Derek herself. Placing her palm against his forehead. Satisfied that he was alright, she turned back to Jane, finding that the other woman had been doing the same with her daughter. Taking a seat, Cassandra began to speak.
"I think that it is safe to say that your daughter and my son did more than just dig. I think they figured out the truth and that is what set off the killer. Someone went to great lengths to make sure that they did not come back alive,"
"From making sure that they ended up in the water, to even shooting at them. Those are not the actions of a person who is just trying to dissuade people from looking. Those are the actions of someone who is trying to re-bury a secret, that has recently been unearthed again,"
For a few moments Jane did not say anything to Cassandra’s statement. Instead she pulled up Emily’s blankets and then patted her daughter’s head lightly. Only then did she turn to Cassandra.
"Cassie, I think we have to seriously take into account the fact that whoever did this is someone close," The woman clearly did not like the words that were coming out of her mouth at all, but she was still saying them.
After years of this being a cold case Derek and Emily begin digging and all of a sudden they are attacked. This means that whoever did it, is not just some stranger with an axe to grind. But they are either family or a friend,"
"Whoever they are, they are close enough, that they were instantly aware of it when Emily and Derek began their search for the truth," When Jane finished speaking, Cassandra did not immediately jump in. But that was not because she did not believe her friend. Instead she was gathering herself. Making sure to arrange her thoughts well.
"Everything that you have just said I have been thinking as well. And no matter how I look at it, only one name keeps popping up for me when I try to come up with a list of possible suspects,"
"There’s only one person close who was around twenty years ago and who is still here now. Someone who is close enough to have realized when Derek and Emily began investigating. Trying to find out what had happened to their fathers, and that person also happens to have reason to have harmed our husbands 20 years ago,"
"I do not know how your husband got involved in all of this. But no matter how hard I think on it. Every fiber of my being is thinking of one person" Cassandra said, and Jane leaned forward.
"Who?" She asked, and Cassandra took a breath.
"My brother-in-law, and my son’s uncle...Sebastian Haven,"
