Chapter 324: Truth
Chapter 324: Truth
Cassandra Haven was not a woman who apologized often. Saying ’I am sorry’ just did not come naturally to her. Needless to say she was very exhausted after apologizing so many times that day. But for the sake of her son, she had to dig deep within herself and apologize once more.
This time to Emily Molson’s mother. With each step that she had taken, Cassandra Haven had been preparing herself for that. She did not want to be the reason that her son had a strained relationship with Emily’s mother. So she had been prepared to just say sorry and be done with it. But what Cassandra had not been prepared for, and could have never been ready for. Was for the door to the apartment that Emily Molson lived in to open and reveal a familiar face.
Never in a million years would Cassandra have thought that Emily Molson’s mother was actually Jane, Cassandra’s Jane. She had not seen the other woman in twenty years, and had never expected to see her again.
That had been their agreement, to part ways and never reach out. The two of them going as far as not sharing last names, to ensure that they could never check up on one another.
But apparently the universe had other plans. Because after decades of not seeing one another, the two of them were currently seated side by side on Jane Molson’s couch. Their children staring at them, with expectant looks on their faces. It would have been the perfect time to explain exactly how they knew each other.
But Cassandra found herself unable to speak. Instead, she was looking at Emily Molson, taking in the young woman before her and trying to compare her to the little girl that she had seen all those years ago. Next to her, Jane was doing the same. But she was looking at Derek instead.
"I cannot believe I did not notice the resemblance. Cassie, he’s gorgeous," Jane said. And Cassandra hummed in agreement.
" Your Emily has grown into a lovely young woman as well," She told the other woman. And Cassandra was not just saying it to be polite. Not only was she stunning. She was also intelligent. They sat in silence for a bit, looking at their too shocked to speak children. Then the two of them turned to each other, hugging desperately before letting go again, just staring at one another. There was an awkward throat clearing from the children’s end but they ignored it, still focusing on each other.
On the way to the apartment. Cassandra had not been too keen on apologising. Mostly because she would be saying sorry to a stranger. But Jane was no stranger to her. So the words fell easily from her lips. Cassandra explaining everything, and apologizing without pause.
"Jane, can you ever forgive me for breaking your daughter’s heart? I know that I overstepped and I am sorry." Cassandra said and before she was finished speaking, the other woman was already nodding.
"I forgive you, Cassie. But you have to promise not to do it again. If you do then there will be a problem," Jane said and Cassandra nodded solemnly, holding out her pinky finger. Promise, she said, locking the digit with Jane’s. The two of them smiling softly at one another. Again, there was another throat clearing. But this one was stronger than the first one. "You two know each other?"
Derek asked, and the two of them finally looked over at their children, who were also looking at them.
The curiosity on their faces as clear as day.
Rather than answer Derek straight away. Cassandra turned back to Jane, their gazes meeting once again. Cassandra could easily read the complicated emotions that flitted across Jane’s face because she was having the same feelings too.
In the end, the other woman nodded and Cassandra returned it. As far as the children knew, the two of them had a past together. But what that past entailed, their kids did not know.
It would have been easy to keep things as they were. To come up with another lie and sell it to their children. They might have been adults now. But if Jane and Cassandra decided to feed them another lie. They would have no reason to doubt it, and no way of disproving it, even if they did.
But Cassandra was sick and tired of the lies. And from the silent conversation that she’d just had with Jane. She’d just had gathered that the other woman was tired of them as well. There had been more than enough lies to last a lifetime. Now it was time for some truth.
Taking a deep breath, she held Jane’s hand in her own, squeezing it for strength. And then she finally addressed her son’s question.
"Of course, Jane and I know each other. It has been many years since we have seen one another, but we do know each other," She said.
"When did you meet, mom? I don’t remember you ever mentioning that you knew Cassandra Haven," Emily said, sounding as though she did not quite believe everything that was going on. Jane was the one who fielded her daughter’s question. "We met 20 years ago during what was a very difficult time in our lives. And after that, we never met up again. This is the first time that the two of us are seeing each other in twenty years," Jane Molson said.
"Twenty years!" Their children gasped in unison.
"But the two of you seem to get along so well. Why waste so much time not seeing one another?" Emily asked, the innocence in her voice, almost making Cassandra want to smile. It reminded her so much of the little girl that she had met twenty years ago, that she once again wondered how she had not recognized her on sight.
"We did not exactly meet under ideal circumstances. In fact, we met during the worst time of both of our lives," Derek, who had been silent, clearly doing the math in his head, suddenly tensed.
"Was it around the time of father’s death?"He asked, and Cassandra shook her head.
"It was not ’around’ that time. It was at exactly that time,"
"The day that Jane and I met was also the day that our husbands died,"
